student nurse here, i have so much respect for the hca's. if u guys went on strike the ward would fall apart. i continuously learn from u guys everyday, u r always smiling and there for the patients and us students.... even after you've done your 10 th last office n u have another 10 to go u will still muster a smile. sort of jealous of u guys in a way as u get to be more hands on, whereas rn's these days are normally just doing paperwork which is not proper nursing as far as im concerned. either way THANK U NHS and HCAS U R BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

      Dear Lorenzo,
Thank you for contacting Health Careers.
It’s fantastic to hear you are considering a career as a healthcare assistant within the NHS. Healthcare assistants (HCAs), sometimes known as auxiliary nurses, work within hospital or community settings under the guidance of a registered healthcare professional - usually a nurse or midwife. The role can be quite varied depending upon the area in which the person is employed.
HCAs play a key role in routine nursing care. For example, you might take and record temperatures and blood pressures; help patients with washing, feeding, and toileting; make beds, and assist people who have problems walking. One of the most important tasks is spending time with patients: talking to them, helping them to deal with any concerns, and reassuring them. With further training, HCAs can take on extra responsibilities such as taking blood samples and removing catheters.
There are no specific qualifications required to work in these roles at a more junior level and the roles and entry requirements can vary for each post. We recommend that you visit the NHS Jobs website, where you can search for job and apprenticeship vacancies with NHS employers across England and Wales, and apply online. By looking at the job description for each vacancy, you can find out what the jobs duties and responsibilities are; and by reading the person specification, you can view the exact requirements for the vacancy, in terms of education, skills, and experience. Please find the website here: www.jobs.nhs.uk
Working as an HCA is rewarding in itself, and you will usually work towards the Care Certificate, developed by Skills for Care, Skills for Health and Health Education England.
If you wish to develop your career further, by applying for more senior positions, then you may be supported to work towards a level 3 QCF qualification. This level may meet the minimum entry requirements for nurse training at a university, although you should always check with each university to clarify what their entry requirements are.
Alternatively, with experience as an HCA, you could apply for vacancies as an assistant practitioner or trainee nursing associate and may be supported to work towards a relevant foundation degree (such as in healthcare practice or nursing associate studies) on a part time basis. Successful completion of this could enable you to enter the final year of a pre-registration programme in nursing or another clinical career, but again, you should check with each university.
You can read more about working as a healthcare assistant on our website: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/clinical-support-staff/healthcare-assistant
You can read more about working and training as a nursing associate on our website:

NHS need to stop sedation of the elderly when they are in hospital, some of the things I’ve seen are shocking, if you have elderly relatives in hospital make sure you keep a very close eye on what they are being given,

      Dear Muhammad,
Thank you for contacting Health Careers.
We do apologise for the delay. It’s fantastic to hear you are a healthcare assistant from Pakistan and considering coming to the UK.
You can read more about working as a healthcare assistant on our website: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/clinical-support-staff/healthcare-assistant
If you want to work in the United Kingdom, you will need permission before you start work. Further information on these arrangements can be found on the UK Border Agency website: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk
Should you then decide to apply for a job, the next step is to find out where vacancies are available. When looking at individual job roles on our website www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles you can find out which sources you can use to search for vacancies across the health sector.
For example, NHS Jobs is the national online vacancy service for the National Health Service (NHS) that details several thousand job vacancies from NHS employers across England and Wales. You can search for job vacancies, download job descriptions and person specifications and apply online. You can also register with the site to receive automatic e-mail alerts when job vacancies that match your chosen search criteria are advertised. You can find NHS Jobs at: www.jobs.nhs.uk
Anyone applying for a role either directly in the NHS or in an organisation that provides NHS services will be asked to demonstrate the values of the NHS Constitution and how it would apply in their everyday work. www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/working-health/working-nhs/nhs-constitution
We do hope you have found this information useful. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us on 0345 6060 655 or message us again at advice@healthcareers.nhs.uk, quoting your personal reference number 4509110.
