  • Manitas De Plata performs Malagueñas Flamencas. This is one of the first US recordings ever made of Manitas De Plata -- October 1963, in Arles, France, produced by E. Alan Silver of the Connoisseur Society (the recording engineer was David B. Jones). It was initially released as an LP ("Manitas de Plata aux Saintes Maries de la Mer") on the Philips and Connoisseur Society labels.

Hi again David. The date I see eveywhere for the Arles recording is October 1963, but it wasn't the first time Manitas was recorded, since E. Alan Silver, in his recollection of the recording published with the Vanguard records, says that he discovered Manitas through recordings made by his friend and colleague sound engineer Marc Aubort, in Saintes Maries, as early as 1955. Aubort wanted to publish them and wrote to Manitas to obtain his authorization, but addressed his letters to "Mr Manitas de Plata, Saintes Maries de la Mer". They all were unresponded. No wonder! Manitas didn't live at Saintes Maries, and if even he had been known by the French post office, it would have been under his real name, Ricardo Baliardo. Whatever became of Aubort's tapes must remain a riddle and a quest for the Indiana Joneses of Flamenco guitar.

Best rumba guitarist in the world, no doubt. But flamenco is quite a different thing, though both may sound alike to the common. Like diesel and gas engines: at first sight they're the same, but experts will tell you they have very little in common. Anyway, his music deserves to be enjoyed forever.

This particular piece was published on E. Alan Silver's Connoisseur Society CS 263 "Manitas de Plata Flamenco Guitar" in 1963 and licensed to Philips in Europe. Philips issues included 840.581 PY, 849.474 BY, P 70361 L, all titled only "Manitas de Plata", see for instance www.ebay.fr/itm/MANITAS-De-PLATA-FR-Press-Philips-840-581-LP-/160824987757 or www.priceminister.com/offer/buy/59565577/De-Plata-Manitas-Manitas-De-Plata-Bulerias-De-Plata-33-Tours.html
The French Philips release titled "Aux Saintes Maries de la Mer" (an absurd title given that it was recorded in Arles, some 40 kilometers away), 844.539 PY, was the equivalent of Silver's Connoisseur CS 965 "Manitas de Plata Flamenco Guitar vol. 2", released in 1966.
