Sadly all our are high streets are derelict or dying. I well remember when Shields road was thriving and full of shoppers. I think the rot set in when Parishes closed down in the 80's I think. I remember going to the Apollo cinema just before it closed down. Now nearly all are boarded up or shops that sell rubbish stuff. So sad
I think the Wall was built before I left & that was 1975 .Was the store Parishes late 60's early70 ' s .Dad loved shopping in there .I remember it as being similar to the store in Are you being served .In the 40's mam worked in a furniture store ,on Shields Rd called George Wilkes & sons .A friend''s mam & dad were publicans in the Raby Arms in the early 70's .My number 12 yellow bus went up Shields Rd ,we used to go to 2 cinemas ,the Apollo & 1at the top of the hill .Sorry ,I've ranted on but this is pure nostalgia .Thanks for talking when walking ,it's more interesting that way
Good to see, when you were progressing down Shields Road towards Byker Bridge, you passed the remnants of Addison Road, where my grandad, aunts and mother used to live. It's now only a stump of a road going nowhere whereas, in my youth, it originally went straight down towards Heaton BR station. It seems the planners, wishing to remove all traces of previous developments, thought it a good idea to switch all the road alignments through 90 degrees. When the great redevelopment came along, my surviving aunts were shunted through several wholly unsuitable "temporary" dwellings until ultimately being put into the Byker Wall. Admittedly, being new then, the flat was very nice but where was the community spirit any more? Those rehousings were done without feeling and that was when I lost my trust in politicians. I remember one day, on a visit to my home town and when returning to my aunt's flat with my mam and dad along Byker Bridge, my mother sadly saying that she no longer recognised the place - "Every house I have lived in here no longer exists. They're all gone."
Parishes Department store was converted to student accommodation but now is a migrant hostel ….further doon Sheilds Road beside Morrisons is another migrant hostel where the Clapham chemical attacker lived….😖
Not the sort of place I remember as a bairn, we lived on Walker Road and Sheilds Road was the East End shopping place to go …bustling street in those days. Wouldn’t venture there after dark now …..🙄
@@outandaboutwithrob it was the place to go for a few beers on a Saturday afternoon during my teens, always had the daftys about but it was all good fun…..as you say it’s gone downhill ….more crime goes on now (you know by who) but is covered up, since Clifford St closed it’s a free for all after dark ☹️
