  • Hello Everyone,
Charles here and today we will dive into the great debate of using or not using straps when wingfoiling! Here I express my opinion about it though I know it is a topic that sparks discussions among wingfoilers worldwide. Regardless… Let’s dive into the reasons for and against using straps, so you can make an informed decision based on your preferences and skill level.
    Reasons to use straps:
    1. Stability and control: Straps provide a secure connection between your feet and the board, offering greater stability and control over the wing and board. They allow you to focus on maneuvering the wing without worrying about foot placement or losing contact with the board during jumps or aggressive turns.
    2. Learning and progression: For beginners, I personally believe with proper instruction strapless is the most natural way to learn; also most large beginner boards don't have strap inserts anyways... though using straps can aid some in learning the basics of wingfoiling. Straps provide additional support, helping you find your balance and maintain control as you navigate the water. They can also assist in mastering footwork and weight distribution techniques, which are crucial for efficient foiling.
    3. Freestyle tricks: If you're into freestyle wingfoiling and love performing aerial maneuvers or spins, straps can be beneficial. They provide a solid connection between your feet and the board, allowing you to execute complex tricks with confidence and precision.
    Reasons not to use straps:
    1. Freedom of movement: Going strapless offers a greater sense of freedom and natural foot movement on the board. You have the freedom to adjust your foot placement and stance as needed, enabling more dynamic and intuitive control over the wing and board.
    2. Safety: In certain situations, being strapless can be safer. If you find yourself in challenging conditions or need to quickly release your feet from the board, being strapless allows for easier and faster foot disengagement. This can be particularly advantageous in waves or strong wind situations where quick footwork is crucial. This is why it is key to have extra space in your straps to give an additional margin of safety in an un-safe environment.
    3. Wave riding: Strapless wingfoiling is often favored by those who enjoy riding waves. Without straps, you have the flexibility to position your feet wherever necessary to adapt to the wave's shape and energy. It allows for quick foot adjustments and greater maneuverability when riding the face of the wave.
Ultimately, the decision to use or not use straps comes down to personal preference and your skill level as a wingfoiler. Beginners may find straps helpful as they learn the basics and build confidence, while more experienced riders might prefer the freedom and versatility of going strapless and vice versa.
It's worth noting that many wingfoil boards offer the option to use both straps and strap inserts, allowing you to experiment and switch between the two setups as desired. This flexibility enables you to adapt to different conditions and riding styles.
So, consider your goals, riding style, and comfort level when deciding whether to use straps or go strapless. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the thrilling experience of wingfoiling!

Removing the straps in the beginning allowed me to stand in a much more relaxed, narrower stance (natural) which immediately improved my foil pitch and front foot pressure for jibes..especially as a shorter rider.

0% of our students have ever learned with straps! Riding strapless in general is better to learn how to wingfoil. In kite foiling using the front strap helps most riders since with back foot they can adjust weight distribution and position. Straps in future help with jumping or powered wave riding style. Get on it!!!

So are you saying straps are a good idea or not?

In the end it will come down to a persona preference and also the direction of your progression. If you are going to do pure freestyle or freestyle wave riding (/big waves) you will need straps… apart from that, straps are optional. You do not need them to learn, you don’t really need or benefit much just from front straps to simply cruise around, so in reality straps are only really a good idea for individuals doing as mentioned above pure freestyle / freestyle wave riding or potentially huge waves. That’s my opinion-
