Dear god, Travis is DEDICATED to his role as Grog-statue
Christopher Calvery when you literally don’t do anything and still steal the show
Travis is amazing!
Best moment in the episode for me
That was nearly ten minutes! 2:46:22 to 2:54:01!
Thank travis for travis applies?
Garmelie : "You should avoid the happy campsite !"
Party : okay.
Matt : you hear jovial music...
Party : Let's go !
or... dont deal with the pixies or the werewolves.... proceeds to attempt to make a deal with both failing epically
@@crystalharvey4330 They'll be saving the worst for last.... The Theater!
To be fair, they were warned about an EMPTY campsite.
Even without the warning, it should be common sense to stay away from music in an enchanted wood!
This was a case of video-game-compulsive-checking-everything-for-loot-because-what's-the-worst-that-could-happen syndrome.
@@Draezeth doesn't have anything to do with video games, I think it's just a human need to find things out instead of being disappointed bc you don't know what there was to see in a magical place you went to.
I think, given how rare guns are in Exandria at this point, it would have been really cool if some creatures tried to counterspell / put magical barriers up against Percy's shots, only to be left confused and fearful for why it wouldn't work. That would have been a nice touch.
Good call, thats been in the back of my mind at times too, woulda been hilarious against a boss fight.
Pillars of Eternity does that. Guns made wizards drop their magic.
@@MidoriChanOG Hopefully Sam gets that moment with Veth in C2 at some point.
@@danielboatright8887 He wouldn't, C2 takes place 20 or so years after C1.
** C1 AND C2 Spoiler alert **
Guns are more common across Exandria, to the point where Hupperdook manufactures rudimentary guns. Ripley distributed a few designs of guns across the world and it has become more common in the following years. Percy and Ripley are the only ones that would benefit from others not knowing about their toys.
@Jason True but the Mighty Nien could have to fight an isolated wizard who lives deep in the woods that hasn’t left in 20 years thought that is highly doubtful
2:37:10 “that’s nice” “hello fairies” “I will make some tea” I’m convinced Caduceus is just tired tired Percy
Love this comment 😄☺
Ashton must then be Percy who's lost everything & is sick of it all.
Now the question is, what is Molly/Kingsley?

Props to Travis for that Grog statue, he held it for over 8 minutes! He deserves another jug of mayo or something
That was seriously amazing. He literally looked frozen at times.
Way to commit to the role Travis! lol
OMG Travis slayed me!!! I was in stitches!! one of the funniest moments on critical role! I loved it!
2:46:12 for the interested.
Left/right arrow reverse and forward is really fun as he's the ONLY thing that doesn't move on the screen.
Sam: "Strong 8. S T R O N G 8."
Taliesin: "Natural 1."
Liam: "Natural 1."
Matt: *cackles maniacally*
Everyone: "Oh no."
Liam: Im shouting "The way is clear. The way is clear"
These three cannot lift to save their lives. It’s beautiful

Best DM feeling in the world when two or more of your players get shit rolls of perception.
I have been there as a DM. The entire party failed a will save against some Harpies.
Hail the GTU!
This had me Dying of laughter!!
Matt: you slam into something hard.
Vax: Does it feel like a theatre?
Matt: no it feels like a wall.
Vax: Like a wall of a Theatre?
Garmelie: NO THEATRE!!!!
The fourth wall?
Matt yelling "NO THEATRE!!!" at 2:11:41 so loud that the audio spikes and starts clipping is so goddamn funny to me, it really shows how fed up Garmili is.
The ironic and funny thing is that next episode takes place in a theater
I came here for this comment XD
@@mr.e7541 It was always going to. The group comedically never listens to Garmelie.
I started wheezing 😂
Rip my ears 😭 (I had headphones on)
does anyone else find it funny that they are willing to enter the lair and fight an ancient black dragon but cower at the prospect of entering a pixie village.
Michael Fisher ehhh, dragons are just damage mostly, pixies have very gamebreaking magic potential, without specifically non-magic AOE damage they can take multiple rounds to take down, and in those rounds they can pick a party apart unless said party is nearly god status.
To be fair, they did face the dragon in Westruun first. Then, they went to his lair when he was weakened.
Pixies gon' f* you UP son!
they knew what to expect for the dragon
A dragon will just kill you (if painfully). Pixies will humiliate you in the process.
I feel like this episode is literally just Vox Machina doing everything Garmili said not to do XD
To be fair, most of the episodes Vox Machina are doing something they were told not to do...
Honestly!
I mean, I'm kinda new to this, but isn't it what D&D is all about?
@@LoryK98 no, not all about that. It's how some people play it tho, which makes things interesting at times and stressful most other times. 😅😇
LoryK98 it is absolutely how it’s meant to be played
I love how sam can think of a song faster than it takes for him to think of what to do in a turn.
But when he takes his turn it has major effects in battle. I know im a year late.
@@robertarrowood3651 late but I agree I think Sam makes many great successful moves. Probably the best out of the group, lol
@DK Saint and the crazy part is when he made the character he wanted to make the most odd and pointless character he could. And turns out he's one of the strongest. I'm ready for season two of vox machina.

Rewatching during pandemic
Wild how the party treats the feywild like itll be a jokey, fun, fairy tail romp; and not the old school german fairy tail horror that it actually is
Oh absolutely (also during the pandemic nearly through campaign 2 as well) most parties do this, one I was part of nearly had a TPK because of it.
My Tiefling cleric on the edge of the clearing facepalming as the party waltzes into an obvious trap
To be fair, Matt set them up with that romp. Their first encounter was a friendly nymph love interest, followed by a comical satyr, then an elven city of buffoonish guards, and an estranged father.
Yay pandemic watching.
If my party still has any illusions about the Feywild being a happy-go lucky place despite being there for about a month, my Gnoll Fey Wanderer Ranger is gonna dispel them. He's a resident of the plane, so he knows better than anyone how dangerous the Feywild can really be.
I like that Sam was dancing the entire time he was charmed, that's some in character dedication
Sam definatley owns the Scanlan character
patdes19 Sam is a master roleplayer. He, Grog, and Vax are some of the best RPers I've ever seen.
Yeh but also grog (Travis) stayd petrified for like 8 minates
B-but Percy though, he's very good too
Yall are giving the women way too less credit. Laura can literally cry on demand, Marisha plays a low CHA-character SO well in spite of actually being really charismatic (she partially runs the whole Critical Role company, damnit) and Ashley is just a sweetheart whom I wish was playing more often
Travis should have gotten a DM inspiration for how long he remained stoned.
I dont think they do that on purpose because it takes away from the theatrics of bad dice rolls and whatnot. I feel like it's intentional that none of them ever get inspiration.
@@DevilWearsAdidas and besides they have the card with the bardic inspiration so dn inspiration isn't needed as much. And Matt has said as much (in some of the Q&A's and stuff
It's because they have a bard that is constantly inspiring the rest of them and the inspirations don't stack. But yeah, I agree that he should still hand them out on top of that so that Sam can spread it around to other people if it happens.
I feel like Sam would make a joke here about Marisha and being stoned >.>
iirc matt gives extra exp for good role play instead of inspiration
Everytime Percy calls Vex “Dear” another year is added to my life out of pure joy
"Hello fairies. We are napping."
KILLED ME LOL
3:57:14 "Everyone was bad, including us, and we lived. That's it." I feel this quote really captures Scanlan's opinion regarding most of the moral dilemmas Vox Machina faces. I love it because it's logical and it perfectly fits in line with his personality and alignment.
it fits in line with the fact he is older and has more life experience than them. Wisdom of 7 in the paper, wisdom of 27 in reality.
As opposed to Kiki's 22 Wisdom on paper and Wisdom of 4 in reality
Wisdom has nothing to do with wisdom. It's poorly named. It's all about perceptiveness and understanding how things work, and nothing to do with conventional wisdom.
Not Justin No, it actually has a great deal to do with conventional ideas of wisdom. What else was perception going to be though?
@@Nebukanezzer there's a reason why Passive Insight exists.
The party used the "things to avoid" list like a "to do" list.
"Happy Campsite" check
"Lycans" check
"Pixies" check
"Hag's House" maybe next week.
😂😂😂
Garmelie: Do not go here
Morgen Freeman: It was indeed the next place they went!
But NO THEATRE!!!!
I feel like they assume if Matt says "Dont go there its dangerous" it realy means "Ive made something really cool there, totally go check it out"
Of course you go there! No DND player worth their salt would actually avoid danger 😂 It is basically DM hinting combat or some sweet loot XD
"Vengeance is tasty ... but not very filling" underrated line

I hope you're still hanging in, there. It's been a year since your comment. Sometimes a good story is a great motivator. Glad you found this one.
You know a joke's good when Liam disappears from the screen
I *love* Matt's face as the party is planning their strategy for the pixies. There's a layer of neutrality but you can just see he doesn't quite believe what he's hearing.
It took 60 episodes for Scanlan and Grog to finally get back at the girls for when they stole the carpet and flew off before finding Clarotta.
Getting back at them is an interesting way to put it considering they claimed Clarota's cave was a waste of time (the Illithid was helpful up until he turned on them) while Orlan's cave was actually a waste of time.
@@MorinehtarTheBlue it wasnt exactly a waste of time as its made trinket more useful which everyone was complaining that he was useless. its just up to vex on how and when she uses trinket. so no, it wasn't a waste of time.
@@skaterpawzgames5049 Nope. What I'm talking about is what Grog and Scanlan actually did. They ran in there and proceeded to do nothing.
Granted if they had actually done something it would have likely led to combat but it was a complete waste of time.
The Trinket thing was absolutely separate. What you are doing here is putting this on as a rider. It has nothing to do with Scanlan or Grog's behaviour or activities.
You can also add that their little side quest ended up becoming a problem because Grog's fake injury was cause for concern among the pixies thus resulting in confrontation.
@@MorinehtarTheBlue To be fair, it was funny. The fact they ran in, Scanlan riding Grogs shoulder, saw something fucky and were like.. "Okay shit we can't just go and touch that skull and die, imma stab you and make it look like we had an epic fight then we run out and lie to everyone" was 10x more funny to me then if they didn't do anything.
Just got to mention how much I enjoy Mercer's 'flitting pixie wings' sound effect.
FFFFTFFFFTFFFFTFFFT
dude travis held that for so long, it looked like his section of the camera was just frozen. really quite impressive. then he just casually resumes it perfectly twice.
Percy and then Vex rolling nat 20s back to back is such 'after you dear' energy given how that relationship is starting to come together, especially how Percy kills one and is like 'That's one!" and its Vex right after. So good.
The couple that slays together stays together
Two natural 20's for Sam. Meanwhile, Will Wheaton rolls a series of ones and sighs, growing more exhausted by the added strain
I like that this implies that all of the natural twenties in the world cause Will Wheaton to roll poorly, does that mean that the natural ones give Talisen the good luck
You get nat 1! You* get a nat 1! Everyone gets a nat 1!!! Except for Talesin
I like that Talesin (with his enchanted Golden Snitch) cries "Witchcraft" at the two natural 20s.
@@wkehrman Yup. He's mad Sam was siphoning off some of his mojo.
Will Wheaton is an asshole though, so its unfair to him to compare him to a person as fun as Sam
I really hope that Matt gave Travis one of those extra experience tick marks for holding that statue pose for so long
@Kel'Thuzad but when he does it's some of the best fights... he absolutely rips and tears and I love it.
3:31:13 Travis and Liam look at each other for barely a second and in perfect unison they both raise their hands up for a high five, _and_ go for the freeze frame. The synergy at this table is unbelievable.
So, Grog is immune to charms, twins & kiki have advantage against charms, Percy has Indomitable + a decent Wis score, and the Gnomes have advantage against charm spells.... which means that hilariously, Trinket is the most likely member of VM to benefit from Countercharm. Gotta love the irony.
Percy was Charmed just an episode or two ago. He would clearly benefit from it.
Not when everybody rolls terribly!
Also Grog is only immune if he rages
@@mr.e7541 I mean yah maybe but considering its audible and has to be used while or during a charm makes it ironically basically useless
Travis' pure joy at the werewolves is giving me life. He just cannot stop smiling

@@Bavio A rescue mission which would have inevitably required them to attempt to infiltrate a camp filled with even more pixies, and potentially more magical enhancements from proximity to the sigil.
And even if they somehow managed to successfully rescue grog and got out of the camp, the pixies would probably just put up the barrier again, except this time they would come even more prepared and less forgiving.
Frankly unless they were able to produce something of interest to the pixies, battle was inevitable. Doing it before they took grog away simply gave them a better chance at success.

It's worth mentioning that there was a path they could have taken, if they were more careful about how they handled things. Namely trying to talk with pixies before casting spells at them for passage through the barrier.
If the pixies attacked them anyway, then yeah. I'd say that's kind of on the DM. But in this case, they kind of brought it on themselves. Which isn't to criticize them as players. But their characters are very bad at planning.
Oh _lycans_ like "lycanthropes," not "lichens" like the plant-fungus-stuff. Okay. I definitely thought Matt said "lichens." Darnit, I was really excited for the crew to meet a group of sentient fungus-people.

Yeah he retconned the nature of the gem. Also Grog was able to break out of it by force in the one shot battle.
Eh, it's a 'gem of requirement' the puppy didn't suffer because it was frozen, Trinket and Grog saw out of it because it wasn't. If you want out, sure (otherwise, you're in). Whatever you want...

With all this talk of "don't go to the Theatre I was hoping the next episode would just be called "The Theatre".
@Adracus Garmili's last name is Lincoln.
"The gang goes to the theatre"
C2E108
@Anrael Vax asked him last episode and again at the beginning of this one. Unless they had some compelling reason to overcome his recalcitrance he wasn't likely to talk. I don't believe that Matt intended a reason per se and that it was just a little personality quirk. Sometimes you just leave space in a PC or NPC and if it becomes story relevant you improvise the answer. It also allows you time to come up with something or have inspiration strike.
While I agree with the assessment of it being personal, and quite frankly he said as much, that doesn't mean that Matt had decided what it was exactly.

I like the character sometimes, but you cant use the elementalist excuse. She talks about nature all the time.
@@hicuprule She is a moon druid, the circle that's most fanatical about protecting nature. There is a real disconnect to it and her view on druidism. If she was another, more relaxed circle, it wouldnt stand out so much.

i love how literally every plan they make sounds great until the moment they actually start it. then it's like "nope, nope nope nope, this isn't working EVERYBODY BAIL"
Ehhh, "sounds great" is debatable. I immediately know when most of their plans are going to go horribly, and i start laughing ahead of time.
i guess many dnd groups are prone to making bad plans
What, you mean the 'great' plan about using a single spell, "Illusory terrain", on the densely populated pixie home to pretend it was destroyed and then running away and expecting the lycans who stalked them to be like "Good job, and you did it without a scratch too!" didn't work?!? Nooooo, noooooooooooooooo

This is why casinos make money; most people that have no grasp of probability. Every roll of a d20 has a 5% chance of being the same as the last roll. It's not that amazing to roll the same twice. Double rolls are very common, but nobody bats an eye unless it's 2x1 or 2x20. Humans math bad.
@aljxNdr knox
Yes, why would anyone get excited at a natural 20, when you could easily far surpass it at later levels with bonuses. It's not like the mechanics of the game give you bonuses for rolling a natural 20, which really doesn't feel like it happens often due to the fact that most other numbers rolled are below.

I'm surprised none of them even seemed to think of it. Maybe they all assumed that NPCs wouldn't get death saving throws.
Grasping Vine could have pulled them out some, and healing word has range.
Or Scanlan could have just grabbed Vax with Bigby's Hand, and pulled him away to where Keyleth could Greater Resto him (if needed) out of range of being charmed herself. Or just the Forceful Hand effect could push him out without actually grappling and crushing him. (roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Arcane%20Hand ).
It lasts 1 minute, so they could have pushed the other dancers out, too, and gained an ally with the lycans.

"Keep away from any jovial camps" ...a jovial camp appears "LET'S CHECK IT OUT!". Love it xD They really didn't need any guides if they ignore the advise tho.
i know this is an older comment, but remember Matt told VM through the nymph that creatures in the fey wild shouldnt be trusted, so when their guide told them to avoid the music, they were naturally already distrusting of his advice. I suspect Matt did this on purpose so that we would get some interesting hurtles and encounters along the way to the cancerous tree. That, and vox machina tend to be a bunch of chaotic assholes who do whatever anyways. lol

He's a professional. No need for concern. He's had years of VOing and creature voicing. It's sometimes hard to break a persona that you are enacting.
"everyone was bad, including us, and we lived" -scanlan
I really appreciate how the situation was very ambiguous, and neither choice was fully informative until they were forced to make a decision. Having neutral-to-the-party npc groups try to get them to take out another "evil" npc group leaves a lot of thinking and decision making to the players, and I think that makes for very healthy moments in campaigns, especially if theres a way to succeed even if the best option isnt chosen.
The pixies were definetly evil, they antagonized everyone.
Nuke them both save the world
Matt did such an amazing job with the Lycans likenesses. I mean, he does a good job with everything, but the line, "LIARS, DECEIVERS, you talk too much. Your meat would taste like ash in my mouth" Gdamn 😳 Such a gnarly line for lycan. The fact the VM deserved it made it even more impactful. Masterful Mercer as usual 🤘🏻

Sam's ultimate history lesson: "Everyone was bad, including us, and we lived. That's it."
Matthew Mercer based this entire sequence on the Forest section of Dragon Age: Origins, too bad Ashley wasn't there this week, she would've known the Lycans were the good guys in this scenario.
