  • I wrote this poem in college for a poetry class, of everything I wrote that semester this seemed to resonate the most with people. It's been about 3 years since I wrote this and I've kept it pretty close to the chest since reading it in class. But considering it is pride month I thought I'd let it out into the universe.
I am also doing Spanish subtitles for this video and hope to do more videos with captions in both English and Spanish.

Thanks so much for watching! I would hope this goes without saying but allow me state the obvious. Not all straight men or straight people are homophobic. I wrote this poem, which became this video, off of experiences I've had with straight men who were on the surface not the slur screaming stereotype of a homophobe we've come to imagine in our minds. Rather this is about experiences I've had with men who were more or less cordial with me, but who I could tell were still uncomfortable with my homosexuality even if they had decided that they were "cool with it." I have also had many purely positive experiences with straight men who have never made my sexuality an issue.

Maybe it’s not so much them as it is you. You and the people who you surround yourself with have made your sexual preference your identity. There’s no need to announce to every room that you enter that you’re gay. Truth is grown folks don’t care. There are so many guys out there who don’t identify themselves as gay or identity with lgbtq stereotypes and labels that you could be missing potential connections with .... look with your heart.
