In a strong and stinging critique of the present Election Commission, the historian and public commentator Ramachandra Guha has said it is “supine, complicit and terrified to act against the PM”. He described its behaviour as “shocking, dismaying, depressing and disgraceful” adding “it shows an utter and complete abdication of constitutional duties”. Mr. Guha said that when a proper history of the Election Commission of India is written the present three Election Commissioners, who he named, will be remembered for the fact they “brought dishonour and disgrace to the Election Commission”. Mr. Guha added that the present Election Commission has “completely let down the Constitution” and “let down every one of us, it’s let down the people of India”.
In a 23-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Ramachandra Guha was talking about the Election Commission’s response to accusations of hate speech and hate-filled animated videos levelled against both the BJP and, more directly, the Prime Minister.
Mr. Guha said history will remember India’s Election Commissioners in four categories - those who brought glory and distinction, those who were reasonably competent, those who were just about alright and those who brought dishonour and disgrace. He said the present three Election Commissioners would fall into the fourth category.

We are as a nation and society becoming an example of a large Pakistan. One of the many reasons is a large bursting illiterate UNCIVILIZED population, voting for an uneducated PM and HM and the failure of national political parties to be active beyond election season. Modi- Shah have been the biggest disaster for the country since the 17th century! Ram Guha may review his historical memory to see if there had been a situation earlier in the past four centuries where the country's wealth and voices had been plundered more before! I can see the old railway tracks, monumental buildings, road infrastructure and even agriculture during the colonial rule. Modi- Shah have done things that even the EIC could not do! I hope Indians now understand very clearly why the Supreme Court decision said that Election Commissioners should be appointed by the CJI, the Leader of the Opposition the the PM, but the PM overruled it with an ordinance or law.. This is the purpose and the result of the PM not following the SC decision.

I attended the seminar conducted by kriya university. Had a chance to meet Dr. Guha. I wanted to know the political mood as per the attending speakers. My own reading of the present situation and the mood of the nation in general seems to come true.

The leader has clearly gone nuts and bananas, enjoying the life of a Maharaja at our, public, expense all the time claiming to be poor and serving the people. Officials of ECI are beholden to us citizens as we pay their salaries and perks but sadly all 3 of them are incompetent, morally bankrupt, disgraceful and without a shred of conscience. They all should be tried under legal provisions as mandated under constitution.

Mr. Ram Guha & Mr. Karan Thapar, As I understand that in our democracy the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary are responsible to form and execute the governance of the country with check & balance maintained by the judiciary. Now why the highest office of check & balances the Judiciary is keeping its eye closed or sleeping over such burning issues and not taking Suo Motto action on all the agencies including the P.M. and issue notice in the first instance to put a full stop to such a rhetoric!

Millions of voters have been influenced by Modi's lies propagated through his rallies. The damage has been done already and that turns the voters in BJP's favour. The sad thing is that the reach of this kind of videos is very small. Therefore the effectiveness of correcting and changing the millions of gullible voters' decisions at polling booths is very minimal.
I appreciate Karan Thapar's timely, bold, and thoroughly researched interviews. Great job. I doubt if there is any other journalist like him in India today.
