Travis has played a major role in what I view as the Renaissance of firearms training over the last 20 years. I love that a good amount of people are finally serious about treating shooting as an actual martial art for which there are objective standards of proficiency. Its not enough to just own a gun. You should be good at it.
The Renaissance of guns. Not only is that an beautiful way to put it but that’s exactly the period we’re in (lucky us right) a great many of things that we thought we knew about guns and shooting more specifically are now being tested, scrutinized and if necessary, replaced with better, more effective methods. Some will fight the wave of change in favor of tradition. But I’ll take best practices over “this is just the way we’ve always done it”.

@@lovetopew9054 I've seen Travis shoot in real life. He is actually one of the few instructors that I have no question is better than me and can teach me something that I don't already know. All it takes to test objective standards is a shot timer. Whats your bill drill time from concealment, USPSA guy?

If I had to pick one, I'm picking Haley, unless you have a specific reason otherwise.
@@SoccerVJ2011 Ben does things that work, Travis explains in great detail why those things work. Both instructors are necessary for a flourishing gun community. And both have wildly different applications for what and why they teach what they do. It’s okay to recognize that both individuals are great shooters and instructors even if Travis is a better teacher and Ben is a better shooter.
These sorts of videos are like pre-reading for real classes. Well done.

Here's a training and video idea: how do we identify the difference between a mass shooter and another armed citizen like ourself responding to the same thing? What signals do we look for and what checks do we run on eachother to verify good guy status when two armed people encounter eachother during a mass shooter event?

Travis made a pistol grip video several years ago and explained it well then. This one is even better. Just shows how he’s evolved into a much better instructor throughout the years.
Biggest difference is we learned better how the human body works
There is no instructor out there that has explained how to acquire a consistent/ firm controlled grip better than Travis. I came across this method in the early 90’s by hit, miss, accident (?) during bowling pin matches. Could never explain it to others as succinctly as this. Perfect.
14 years of shooting and this little tipp, fixed everything for me. I always focused on the left thumb when applying pressure. Since i switched the focus on to what was explained in the video, i have no shots to the left anymore. Somehow it fixed my grip and or triggersqueeze issues when shooting fast.

I’m just an average guy. I’ve got military and LEO family members that I shoot with. You point in this video is brilliant. I had never thought of it that way. It makes kinetic sense. What I’ve always had trouble with is what to do with my thumbs. ex. Over/under, cross thumbs, even just floating up thumbs. That always confused me. Plus if, God forbid, I ever find myself in that situation, I know I’m not going to be thinking about my thumbs.
As someone who learned to shoot a handgun in the heyday of Jeff Cooper and The Modern Technique of the Pistol, I find this very useful. I wasn't serious about shooting for a lot of years. Now that I am again, I'm trying to adapt to some of the improved techniques and ideas. It's interesting to me that as I've tried to adapt, I've struggled with new concepts of gripping the gun. This was a very good explanation. When I think about it, this is what I learned to do back in the day. It was never taught this way, but it is how I naturally gripped my gun. As I cleared the holster and brought the gun forward, the fingers of my left hand would lock on to the fingers of my right. As I raised the gun (shooting Weaver) my left elbow would tuck which drove the heel of my left hand tightly into the grip. I will continue to practice and learn. Thank you for the great presentation.

How about equal height, equal light, and equal pressure; then sweep the trigger back. Your arms and torso are like a turret, and your finger is a servo, so the only instrument that should ever move is your trigger finger when you shoot and torso when you point. With all things being equal and you have eliminated sympathetic movement, anticipation recoil, and do everything the same each time, then the bullets will naturally land on the target.
I would love to see a full pistol 1-3 class recorded for purchase similiar to what John Lovell has at WPSN. I would pay good money for something like that from Haley strategic.

I'm 5'5 150lbs. Different methods work for different people. I have always gripped a gun very high with my support hand, wrist canted far forward. Biggest thing is to cant my elbows out to squeeze the gun and lock it in with straight arms. I have no problems with recoil. Methods learned from a few different instructors combined.
Your talking about rotating the elbows slightly. There's a whole other section on grip that is not in this video but is one of the aspects we teach.

At speed, how does it work, though? I understand the concept but when drawing from a holster there is no way to have the pins at the front of the grip. You're, basically, forced to start your grip on the backstrap.
You're going to get a grip as high as possible from the draw. When your hands meet you can build the rest of the grip from there. Works at any speed.
Do I have to know the different classes of levers in order to carry a gun? Or is that propriosception and myelination that I need to know?

The big debate in the industry right now is Thumbs Forward vs. Rotated Palm Squeeze. This was a great video to watch.
This video doesn't focus on the thumbs as much but we do have our own theories about that.

The flaw in this is that, for beginners, they don't have the base of instruction on where their " pins " should be. They have to be taught how to make their pins meet in a workable fashion.
From my perspective, I teach novices to develop a grip from the larger part of their hands, and bring fingers forward. From there, they can make small adjustments to find what works well for them. I have found that this works for a vast majority of those I train.
That which Haley proposes can work for those of us who have been shooting for years but haven't found a reliable and consistent grip. This is where a lack of fundamentals is revealed.
We go over that and more. This is just a snippet from the block of instruction. This is the core concept but not all the details.

I don't think this explanation is exactly right. I'm commenting to provide insight, not to attack. I've heard Travis speak, he is a stand up guy, an excellent instructor, and honestly a hero in every sense of the term.
The advice here also works, but not for the reasons explained in the video. Fulcrum means pivot point. The fulcrum is still on your shooting hand between your thumb and pointer finger regardless of how you grip the pistol. The fulcrum never changes. The gun is going to recoil back and over that part of your hand no matter what you do for grip. Just because you're putting pressure on the front of the pistol's grip does not move the fulcrum. The only way that you could say you're moving the fulcrum is if you stop holding the gun with your thumb wrapped around the grip (that would indeed change the fulcrum, your face would be the fulcrum when the gun flies out of your hands and hits you in the face).
What you're doing from a physics mechanics perspective is changing the direction of the force that you're applying on the lever. The apple and golf club examples break down because they are not levers. There is no opposite force acting on an apple or golf club. The baseball bat example kind of works because the baseball is a force acting on the bat at the moment of impact.
Now the traditional method as Haley's suggesting is putting pressure from the sides, which is ineffective because you're applying force perpendicular to the force being acted upon. Do you catch a baseball by letting it hit your glove (stopping the force with force) or do you try to catch it by clapping your hands together? Obviously the first, because you're bracing opposite the force.
By focusing your pressure points on the front of the grip (which will absolutely work), you're applying force directly opposite of the force from the gun powder (because the fulcrum has remained unchanged, the lever/grip is rotating against your fingers). Moreover, the more force you apply further from the fulcrum (e.g. further down the lever) the more leverage you'll have. Thus why shooting a full framed pistol is easier than shooting a shorty like the Glock 26.
I don't mean to criticize. I myself am not an instructor, I'm an engineer. But I think understanding the why is very important.

He didnt say it was a different grip, youre just changing the way you put force into the gun, makes a huge difference i started doing it intuitively a few months ago and it changed the game for me
If that made you change how you applied force to the grip, then you never understood the grip. Controlling the pistol has always been an opposing force in the heel of the hands. If his describing in the manner he did helps someone understand it, then so be it, but it is still doing the same thing.
For some people the analogies help a lot. At the end of the day use the grip or methods that work for you

This seems spurious at best. Once your arm is in a specific position the muscles can only work one way. Also, swinging anything is a poor analogy for weapon handling.

I have learned a lot from Ben Stoeger, but I have also learned quite a bit from Travis. I saw Ben post a clip of Travis recently, and it made it seem like you need to understand big words (that Travis sometimes uses) in order to carry a gun. From what I know of Travis, that's not the case, the vast majority of information I have seen him provide, is easily digestable, and even with some SAT words thrown in, the average joe should understand what he is saying.
Disclaimer: I've had a few tests done when I was a kid due to having primarily inatentive ADD, and my reading comprehension and vocab were at a college level when I was in 3rd-4th grade. When I took some of the pre-law courses that fit my electives, I didn't find it difficult to understand legalese, and I also was taking classes for a biochem degree.
PS. I have found that my shooting umproved, and so has the shooting of people I've coached when using the grip suggestions that Ben provides. When I vice the gun, I find that you get a bit of dip on the return, but if you back off a bit, the gun should return consistently and with a negligible impact to your splits. As long as the gun is trapped in your hands, your wrists are locked, your arms and shoulders are acting as shock absorbers, you should be able to cook.
