- There are some amazing places to explore on the Eastern side the Sierra Nevada Mountains range. In this video my son and I with a few close friends set out to explore the Alabama Hills Recreation area and Coyote Flats. We had a blast out on some easy, moderate and even a little difficult trail, we found some amazing camps sites and of course cooked up some great food at camp.

Cooking fancy food like that out on the trail is total bullshit. One fancy cooked meal (dinner on the first night) is cool but the rest of it isn't practical at all. Save the fancy cooking for dinner guests at home and when you're out wheelin practice KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid!!!!
Spend more time cooking and cleaning up than wheeling and exploring.

I have so much respect for Marco....not only because he's always filling up empty stomachs, but even though he's a vegetarian, he still cooks up meat for the people that eat it. Major props

Lone Pine CA is my hometown and I love seeing people exploring the Alabama Hills and the surrounding mountains, definitely a hidden gem type of area that I think more people should experience at least once in their lives
Marco is so kind and generous everytime, love from new zealand. I am going to buy my first jk 2018 today and super excited, had a grand Cherokee before srt8 (different class), but i am finally buying for what i came here on earth.
Youâll really like the JK. I had a 2016 JKU (i.e. 4-door) & just traded it for a JL. I managed to put 80K miles on my JK in only a few years & not a single issue after lots of road trips & plenty of off-roading.

Ok, I've got to say this is so inspiring. I live in the south of Mississippi, in the Desoto National forest. Quite and solitude rule here. My wife bought me a 2018 JL for my 65 birthday. YES IT IS ORANGE.That's why she bought it. I always wanted an orange jeep. I've also got an 03 Wrangler 2 door X with 240,000 miles. But your overland adventures are so inspiring. Going to outfit it for overland and head west. Thanks for good videos, that are inspiring and fun to watch. Would much rather overland than rock crawl. Way too much investment to scrape it up and bang it around.

I like you. Your cinematography, narration, and pros vs cons are great. I have been debating in my mind sports car for a little fun, or Jeep for a lot of fun. Definitely swaying me towards a Jeep. I miss blasting though Iraq and Afghanistan in some very capable vehicles. My kids are only two and three, but I constantly foresee them in my adventures. So your detailed reviews of gear really helps with that. Thank you.

The Alabama Hills have been a popular filming venue for decades, serving as everything from the Old West to the plains of Afghanistan, to the surface of Mars. Ambush Canyon is so named because that's where the ambush of the Rangers, in the original version of "The Lone Ranger," was filmed. The town of Lone Pine, just outside the Hills, is home to the Lone Pine Film History Museum, which features props, costumes, posters, and other memorabilia from many of the films shot there.
What I enjoy the most about your videos is your positive attitude & enthusiasm, even when tackling really tough trails like Black Bear Pass in Co. Also, your compadre Marco is a real asset to this group, I hope it stays that way!
I'm just now learning about overlanding. I knew about off-roading and rock crawling, which honestly the hard-core stuff doesn't interest me. However, the trails you were on in the early parts of the video, that looks like just my speed. I have the Tacoma TRD Off Road now, but I feel like I should have gotten one sooner. I lived and worked in SoCal for 4 years and I never realized there was that much exploring to do out there. Love the channel, and I can't wait to get Marco's cook book and a new Scottle.
MARCO is da man..... we all have a friend like him when it comes to camping. plus I have a friend who talking non-stop when camping and even after we sleep he sings. we never stop him cus after his songs we have a good time at the toilet the next morning

First trip to Coyote Flats was 1971. My buddie and I did the whole area in an old Ford Courier 2 wheel drive. He drove and I stood on the back bumper for traction on the tough spots. There used to be an airstrip on the flats that was used for high altitude testing. FS removed it a few decades ago, The trail you turned around on is truly challenging. I did it on my KTM when it was a single track. Then it turned into a side by side trail and now it's a Jeep trail. There is a very soft, off-camber side hill that will make your life flash before you.
This is the kind of trails I'm interested in- moderate dirt roads with great views and great camping spots. Keep em' coming :)

He ran into his garage... loved it! Don't feel too bad though; I backed into my garage door and knocked the the door off its track... That's what talking on your cell phone, getting distracted, and not paying attention to what you're doing will do to you.
First of your videos I've seen and I'd like to just say I really appreciate the effort you put into adding movement into your shots. I see a lot of these shots and think "most people would've just stood still for that shot." But your stuff comes off far more dynamic and entertaining due to that added effort on your part. Great stuff, beautiful rigs and countryside. Very much enjoyed the watch.

Some of the things I like about your videos. You give coordinates of camps etc. This is most gracious as not all do that and when you don't live anywhere near there it helps a lot with research and planning. And you've also shown that camping doesn't mean freeze dried food but fresh, good food and good eats, something we've been doing for some time now. (A fridge/freezer does help) So from your neighbors up north (Vancouver Island, Canada) many thanks.

Couple miles northeast of Bishop is Silver Canyon Road,
Which heads up to the Ancient Bristlecone Forest. The whole area up there is stunning!! 11000ft, 4000 year old forest and overall amazing location! I highly recommend it in your next trip!
sonofcar1 do you happen to have trail coordinates? Iâve been wanting to visit that area for a while.
Backcountry Exploring Like most of my trips I just have a basic location in mind and just go,(I really need to be more planned lol) which means I never take Coordinates of my locations. But the tool I used for this trip was trailsoffroad.com. If you go on there and look around the Bishop area you will see they have trail info on coyote flats and silver canyon road with a good amount of info for free, itâs a great website! Hope this helps

Growing up in that area, I would ride my dirt bike all over those mountains. I love exploring and can't wait to take my Jeep into the Owens Valley.
I can't even wait till I'm done with college. Just got a 2019 JL Sport I want to build up and overland, mud, crawl, literally everything jeep!
Gonna try this fir my first Jeep camping trip, going solo. I've been motorcycle camping for about 10 years. Still dig the traditional ground tent, but may just try the roof tent. can't wait...Thanks!!!

Just spent the night at the spot where you guys stayed in Coyote Flats. Beautiful campsite and SO peaceful on a Thursday night - we had the place to ourselves. We were sad to see some trash, but picking it up gave us something to do and we were sure to leave it better than when we arrived... our contribution for you sharing the GPS coordinate. Thanks Brad!

Just did coyote flats yesterday. Amazing trip. Leveled Ram 1500 with 35s. I kept up with 2 built jeeps. 10 hrs on trail, worth every minute. If your scared of getting desert pin striping then stick to mall crawling. It did a number on my truck lol.

Marco's cooking always looks so good. I would like to see some videos that really go into the meals. You could cover what you bring, how you pack it, and some favorite recipes.
We were just up to Coyote Flats a couple weeks ago. We came in on the trail you attempted to leave on. That Most Difficult section is no joke! It took us about three hours to clear that 1/4 mile section with a JK, a CJ, a 4Runner, and a Land Cruiser. You still had about 4 or five obstacles to clear but you were on the toughest when you turned back. Probably a good choice! The rest of the way after that section is very steep but no major obstacles. The Most Difficult section is a bruiser, though!
Oh me Marco. Weâd make a great team. Iâm a professional eater. Wow Brad, that last bit, oh me! Need tough vehicles for sure.

Your adventures are the best on You Tube, Brad. I live vicariously through your videos. We don't have many trails like those out on the West Coast. When Marco's cookbook comes to fruition I'm in line for one.
Smart choice to turn around where you did. I know that spot well! While coming up the other side I tried to give my old 4Runner max clearance around a large boulder and got a wee bit too close to the edge of that nice drop off. The side of the road crumbled under my tires and my rig took a severe list to port. I saved my ride, but it took some clever winching to get me safely back on the road. We ended up backing up out of that spot and heading back down the mountain. Great vid as always!
Brad I'm really happy you came across that camping spot, I camped there recently with a group from OC Overland. There was more water a month or so back and had a lot of wildlife activity as you experienced for yourself. That spot is truly a gem...

Love the eastern sierras, very different than the western slope. That area to the north along 395 contains trails all the way to Lee Vining and beyond, to the town of Bridgeport, and ultimately South Lake Tahoe! There is a LOT of ground out there to explore!

Ok...that might be the best I've seen for easy drive in on the Alabama Hills, and Coyote Flats for those who can "get there"...This was another epic video. Went Through Lone Pine from Death Valley 2 years ago...It is truly beautiful...and that was without doing any off road stuff. Your trips are really wonderful. What a wonderful group of folks.

AWESOME! I JUST RODE THROUGH THAT AREA IN AUGUST, HEADING TO WASHINGTON STATE. I SPECIFICALLY TOOK THAT ROUTE AFTER TRAVELING THROUGH Death Valley, THE OLDEST TREES KNOW TO MAN ARE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF THE INYO NATIONAL FOREST. I HAD TO SEE THEM! VERY COOL.

Brad, we just did this with 2 JKs and a WJ last weekend. That second rock section on your way out to Big Pine was by far the most difficult. After winching the WJ through we walked over the rest without issue all the way to 395. Going back this weekend to run it clockwise. See you on the trail!
Iâm more impressed he can park that thing in a garage. He could consider sleek rectangular roof lights. Iâm old school and prefer the round ones myself too. Moreover, he could park in the driveway because an overland vehicle is made for the outdoors. So no harm there either. I can just barely back out of the garage with my simple cuv with a roof basket.
