      I’m from North side too. Do you have any good spot recommendations? I prefer creeks or ponds but anything will do

    • @grunge-mb9sb
      @grunge-mb9sb Před měsícem

      @3amfreestyle895 San Jacinto river under I 45 in Conroe lots of space to set up and look around easy car access opposite side from the dirt bike track
      Spring creek under I 45 some bank fishing and easy car access
      Generally any creek or river that's coming from a lake or reservoir of any size will most likely have gar quite a few ponds and lakes next to rivers and creeks get flooded during heavy rain and have fish trapped in them you can find soke pretty large gar in some very small ponds as a result
      I found a pond half a football field in size and it's full of gar they spawn there too, there is everything from 6 inch gar, 12 inch gar to 4and 5 footers, there very active but won't take cut bait like tilapia or anything besides bluegill or maybe large shad .
      There used to be a 6 foot at least gar in this lake and it was flushed out during a flood, quite a unique lake it's fed by a creek and is 15+ ft deep in the middle but only maybe 5 or so car lengths wide, tons of timber fall, so far in all my time fishing there I have caught bluegill, Goliath crappie, gar, largemouth bass, bowfin, blue catfish, channel catfish, cast nets yield shad if I don't get snagged and alligators have been spotted as well.
      Point being if you can find bodies of water like the lake next to the Sanjacinto river @ I 45 in Conroe next to the dirt bike track you can fish the river and it floods massively into the adjacent lake which has a diverse amount of hungry fish.
      For me gar is the deep sea fish equivalent to freshwater size wise, I have yet to get a 4-5 footer and would love to.
      Good luck and if you check out any of the spots I listed let me know

    • @grunge-mb9sb
      @grunge-mb9sb Před měsícem

      @wildlifefishingshow any ideas why a gar would not take a cut bait if tilapia or large shad I tried for weeks 3 x a week , I can see them sticking there tails out of the water not to slap the water but it looks like there diving down, and if course quite a bit of surface activity like air gulping.
      I have tried fishing on light bobbers with a foot of line below with the bait and also Un weighted bottom fishing
      It seems like I can only get them to bit if a swim the cut bait across there face which is hard when water is about 2 inches visibility, other days you can sight cast for them but then they will not take the bait, I tired dead shad as well this is in a lake a less than half a football field long and about 4-5 car lengths wide, it's infested with gar of all sizes any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I have been fishing here since I was 16 years old and am now in my late 30s I just want to catch and release one of these elusive larger gar in the lake. I fish around 10 am all say till 4 pm sometimes they nibble but spit the bait, I have hooked up on one in the distant past with whole bluegill and recently a 2 footer on a 1 inch dead shad I was swimming in front of it's face.

    • @wildlifefishingshow
      @wildlifefishingshow  Před měsícem +1

      @grunge-mb9sb based on this info, it sounds like they are going for live bait. Try live bluegill and shad under a float, and I bet the bit picks up real fast.

    Thank you for these videos! I am pretty new to Houston (8-9 months) and literally live 2-3 blocks from Lake Houston. I haven't had much luck at the lake yet, but I've only gone a few times. Also, being a natural XX chromosome recipient, and identifying as such, it's hard finding people who will fish with me 😒 Anyway, I moved here from San Diego where I would regularly fish the San Diego River and Mission Bay. I found that big mouth bass really like mice. I'd shoot them with a pellet rifle and use them for bait. On the bay, I'd fish for sea bass using squid and smoked oysters. Problem is sting rays like it too 😅

    I sat in on a seminar with Lance Armstrong's hydration powder called "scratch labs". One thing worth noting that you may not be aware of is that you need a certain amount of sugar to cross the blood brain barrier. their lemon lime powder is probably the best electrolyte powder I've ever had, and I've had most of the ones available in Texas and Colorado bc my wife runs the healthy living department at an HEB, and before that she worked for Whole Foods doing the same job for 12 years. The Bucked Up brand actually has a really good orange mango powder as well that we buy when the heb healthy living department does their quarterly 25% off everything sale.

    I can never land a gar. They have such bony mouths. I've seen people use a short length of nylon rope that they've brushed out as a lure. The gar's teeth get snagged in the rope almost like velcro. I haven't had luck with that either but I think it's the presentation.

    • @wildlifefishingshow
      @wildlifefishingshow  Před 2 měsíci +1

      That definitely works on the smaller species. How to hook a gar depends entirely on what species you're talking about. What you can and can't do changes dramatically between smaller and larger varieties.
