      No, the XB-70 did not fail. Only three were to be built after the B-70 program was canceled. AV-3 was obviously not completed, but the other two went on to fly in a high-speed research program for several years. AV-1 was retired in February 1969 when it was flown to Wright Patterson AFB after its last supersonic flight in December 1968.

      @@Aircraft_with_Chin Basically, because it was replaced.
      In 1967 AV-1 was transferred from the USAF to NASA in support of SST research. NASA later made an agreement with the USAF to fly YF-12A/C aircraft which were more advanced in that regard than the XB-70 AV-1 which was limited to Mach 2.5, thus it was retired, not "canceled."
