  • Zam! I surprised a friend a few years back by introducing him to Zam. After he had been cabbing for 20 plus years, he was shocked and dismayed a bit, to admit that he had never, ever heard of someone using Zam to polish turquoise and he even swore that the Zam buffed out 500 or higher grit. Well, I wouldn't go as far as to say it will do that, but Zam will get out 1000 grit or higher in turquoise.
Zam will also put a shine on mother / host rock. It will polish stones at a 6 or 7 on the hardness scale. Anything harder, such as agate, it will not polish.. it is too soft of a polish for this.
Amazon carries Zam, as do other jewelry stores.
Here's a link for a container of Zam (it comes in large, larger and largest tubes).

For the Felt Soft discs, I really dislike using the screw-on ones... for one, the screw can wind up coming through the felt and nicking the stone. For two, the felt rounds become worn in the screw in area, before the felt is completely used, meaning... the screw strips the rounds form the inside. So, I prefer to use the shanks with a screw top.

Here is a link for the grinding rounds (you can use these shanks for your felt rounds, but sometimes the felt round holes are too small, so keep that in mind, you may need to get different shanks). www.amazon.com/Diamond-Cuttin...

I’d of tried to maybe hit the 1200 on the cab machine more to get the little edges smooth and then hit 3000 grit and then use zam.

Hi I accidentally put a couple turquoise through the tumbler and sucked the colour and shinne out of them. Is this reversible?

This is very helpful to know. Thank you for posting! I received some tourmalinated quartz that the lapidary didn't polish the bottom of at all and some facets over the top of the rose cut. Would you recommend something I could use to polish them? Right now it's in a cloudy-white state on the bottom. I'm not sure what step in polishing it is to know what to try next or what wont damage or remove much material.

You could try Zam.... if the stones are lightly scuffed, this will help take out up to a 500 grit grove. However, if they have large groves, you might need to sand them up to a 500 grit first then use the Zam.

All/most of the turquoise I use is American sourced, so Kingman, Damele, Morenci, ect.. I do get some turquoise from Mexico from the Sorento mines, so this might also be Sorento.

Hi there. I’m wanting to shine a piece of dull turquoise that’s in my wallet. Can I use zak with just a cloth to shine it?

The Zam works best with a rotary tool of some kind with a felt pad. I don't think the cloth would give enough ... umph to clean it . It needs some speed to hep the polish do it's magic.
