A lot of people assuming that the switch on the right was the kill switch, but knowing Rick I think it was the sequence (right switch, left switch, right switch) that really did it. Morty just got unlucky and stumbled upon the kill code.

As someone doing an engineering study who has done a few courses on user interface design: I wouldn't solely blame Morty for this. One would not initially think that a similar looking switch next to a light switch is controlling the power to the life support of 10 people.

Rick wanted Morty to flip the switch. That's why he's so passive aggressive about it. That's why he made it an easy mistake. It was just waiting to happen. It gives Rick an excuse for two things:
1) A reason to get out of the garage and go on an adventure with Morty
2) Another chance to emotionally thrash Morty.
Human psychology hates perfection. There is no utopia for us. We want to mix things up. We want to sabotage systems around us to see what happens. We're curious creatures and it's entertaining for us.

Basically nothing : if someone tries to light up the garage and uses the wrong switch, they're probably going to do the exact same thing Morty did : switch on the light then switch off the first switch.
So they will do the sequence anyway, so it's still not safe at all to have this switch in the garage. The fact that you have to switch three times instead of one basically did not increase the security at all.

A number of people (correctly) point out that this is really Rick's fault rather than Morty's, but Rick's not exactly blaming Morty here, just telling him to "grab a shovel."
How I feel at work every day when dealing with people who fail to follow the most simple instruction.
Is wasn’t just the right switch, it was most likely the combination of right, left, right that killed them which is why Rick was annoyed Morte accidentally discovered the combination to terminate them. Along with that Rick most likely had the kill switch in place as a backup in case they went Rogue that’s why they were restrained
Plot twist: the right switch does nothing and Rick just had a storage unit full of dead astronauts waiting for the people occasion when Morty doesn’t do exactly as Rick says. Same for the light switch in the storage unit closet. An actually smart person would never link something like life support to something as ubiquitous as a light switch thousands of light years away, especially without backup. It’s not even Rick’s garage, so anyone else could walk in and hit the wrong switch and Rick knows it. Total plant. Rick just wants to bully Morty.

For the smartest man in existence, that’s a pretty dumb place for a kill switch.
In his defense, everything works perfectly as long as he's the only one touching sh*t. His annoyance to Morty's mistake shows that yet again has other people disappointed him. If anything, he both forgot other people exist and at the same time overestimated their abilities to follow simple orders, and not touch things they shouldn't.
This is actually a recurring thing with Rick, he frequently leaves incredibly dangerous things in the open, with the assumption that the other family members knows it's his stuff and are therefore not going to touch it. Remember when Jerry opened Rick's drawer in the fridge? "Technically, the second drawer is mine".

Took me 5 years to figure out the light switch is one of those kind that allows power to certain plugs, and Morty turned off the life support system for the 10 people in the room by accident.

Accurate. Too many humans fucking suck at following directions / instructions, even if given on a silver platter in a simple concise format -- especially when it involves the road. Exceptions for safety reasons, but it usually isn't the case depending on how you're traversing / traveling.
When i first saw this scene, the joke/point went WAY over my head. I didn't know that Morty flipping that switch is what caused those people to die. I just thought that Rick was appalled at Morty for not knowing right from left, and that they were about to do something grueling/traumatizing with those shovels that would finally teach him left & right.

The very idea of having an easily flipped switch that could kill a bunch of people reminds me of the American Nuclear codes in the 1950's which relied on military discipline and the code was 00000000 which someone might press on accident or thinking they were somehow clearing the system.

We never see Morty flip the switch, so it is entirely possible Rick actually meant "right". and the left switch was for the life support system.
