It was so great when Double Fantasy came out. We hadn't heard anything from John in such a long time. Such a good, optimistic album. It made the shooting that much harder. Like so many, i remember where I was the day I found out.....
Absolutely. I also remember liking the Yoko songs more than the John songs! To be honest, I found the John songs (and the album cover) super corny when it first came out. Then he gets murdered, like, two weeks later....and every one of those songs got framed in a totally new light, in the worst possible way. It's been over forty years, and I've never gotten over it, I still can't believe it. You write a song like, say, "Julia" and someone STILL murders you. What a world.

Even my mom was crying as she told me. I was a huge fan and played the Beatles music on our family room phonograph growing up. She knew how much I loved John and the rest of the group
Great post. "Woman" is one of my favorite songs of all time and it was our wedding dance song too!
I was only 6 y/o when this was released but I have vivid memories of this playing on the radio in early 1981 and the emotions it brought.
John is one of the best songwriters and one of my favorite artists.
FUN FACT: The video of him and his wife walking together in Central Park was filmed on November 26, 1980. 12 days before his death. The parts with his wife by herself was filmed one month after his death.
I would hardly call it a Fun Fact! Nothing fun about John being murdered days later, and Yoko by herself being filmed as a widow because of a senseless act of violence.

Well... that's actually a depressing fact.
It’s a beautiful song by a beautiful guy. It makes me cry when I listen to it and especially when I see “to be continued”, knowing that a very short time later he was murdered. Such a loss to Yoko, Julian, Sean and the entire world. RIP John 😇😢
To be fair,the "To be continued" part was obviously added to the video which was made after his death anyway.
He was a terrible father to Julian, and a terrible husband to Cynthia.
At 3:48 he's signing an autograph for his assassin. At 3:56 is a photo of him in the morgue that wat taken by a tabloid photorapher.

The day after we lost him, we all got together and listened to his newest record. Such a bittersweet memory.

This is just one of many incredibly wonderful songs Lennon wrote and performed. It's loving and beautiful and has some background meaning relevant to his life and relationship with Yoko.

Yes I love "Watching the Wheels"...from the same album. "Double Fantasy" is one of his best solo works in my opinion. John had a different outlook on life at that time and he was so motivated to come back and produce impactful music. The world lost a bright beacon of light.
That this was just before his death AND it's so beautiful is what makes it so devastating. I bought this album the day it came out.

So heartbreaking to see the scenes of her sitting alone in Central Park - where she would build Strawberry Fields to remember him - in view of their apartment in the Dakota - the place where he was gunned down. Also wish they didn't include the disgusting NY Post morgue photo. But it is a beautiful song by John.

In the third verse John changes the words from “Ooooh oooh… well well.” To “I love you… yeah yeah”. This is an echo of the song “She Loves You”, The Beatles 1963 monster hit that is considered the one that launched Beatlemania.
since you like that song, you will like another Lennon song called Jealous Guy, which has some of the same sentiment as Woman and with another great Lennon melody.

One fact you need to know is that this film clip was made very soon after John was assassinated, which is why there are a number of shots of Yoko by herself.

It was already out and moving up the charts qhen he was killed. His unfortunate death drew more attention to the album.

This video was shot in Central Park in NYC he lived right across the park…which he was shot….on December 8, 1980…where were you when he was shot….I was at Bruce Springsteen concert in Hartford Connecticut…and Bruce announce to the crowd that John Lennon was shot…he then sang Lennon song in his memory….

Loved it, thank you. "Mother" live at MSG is heartwrenching, especially if you know how he grew up. His father left him as an infant. His mother gave him to her sister, who he grew up thinking was his mother. His mother had serious mental issues and when he finally started getting close to his real mother as a teen.... she gets killed by an off duty police officer driving drunk... WTF
