    I was brought up in Berkshire like Pam and although a tad younger, her experiences were close to my own. I didn't pass the 11 Plus either and had to just get a normal working job. Wow, so...this brought back so many memories for me. I love this woman! :) The need to laugh since 2020 is so important!!!!!!

    Dear Pam, what an absolute inspiration you are.
    I was 14 when you appeared on Opportunity Knocks. You gave me so much by doing that.
    I'd written poems for a few years by then; a fact I kept to myself.
    You inspired me to continue...and made me realise I was was not 'abnormal'. It did take another decade or so to get up the courage to share my writing... But only amongst friends and family.
    Only now, am I finding the confidence to broaden my horizons again with my writing... Listening to you here has sparked the inspiration you first ignited 48 yrs ago.
    I realise too, why you resonated with me on such a deeper level.
    This is the first time I've heard you speak of your true experience after the show.
    I had guessed your journey had involved determination, self belief and a refusal to sell your soul.
    I admire you even more for the courage that took.
    It's underestimated today just how many barriers us women of a certain age had to break down.
    I applaud you for being such a warm, talented, enduring trailblazer and congratulations on such a long, successful, unique career being 💯% authentic 👋👐💞🤗

      You'd have thought they'd have rigged up a microphone so we could all hear the requests by people. Nevertheless it was very entertaining to listen to.

    You sound so much like me. I have 5 siblings, brought up in a council house, live in Gloucestershire and i joined WRAC. I felt the same way as you when i returned from Cyprus and dad had arranged for 21st birthday with my "friends" but they were not the same as when i had left home and so cancelled the party. It is so different when you ,eave thr forces and try and integrate into the "real" world. People used to think I was you because of my name and accent but of course i couldnt write fantastic poetry. Great to listen to you.

    Love Pam Ayres but thought the interviewer seemed as if he had just flown in from another country to talk to someone he knew absolutely nothing about. And even when she explained something, he didn't seem as if he understood..one of six children, in a small council house in a tiny village in the years just after the war etc etc . That's just for starters.

    What an awful interviewer. Ask a question... pause for the answer... ask the next question on his list (cutting across any worthy punchline of Pam's responses and flattening them dead, and not related in any way to where her dialogue has taken us)... ad nauseum. Time and again she tried to lighten the atmosphere, but he had his own doom-laden 'serious' agenda, and was not going to be diverted by any light-heartedness on his interviewee's part. Poor show. Poor Pam. She's an icon and deserved much, much better.

      His fatuous question at 41:41 was answered with such grace and dignity that he didn't even realise how patronising he'd been! I got the impression that he wasn't really familiar with Pam's oeuvre, but had just scanned her wikipedia page.

    • @hunkhk
      @hunkhk Před 10 měsíci +6

      I also think given this was being recorded they could have at least arranged a roaming mic for the audience questions. The audience and vieweres deserved better. But Pam is so charming witty and down to earth. Had a smile viewing the entire time

      @PetroicaRodinogaster264 Před 9 měsíci +3

      Well, I am not sure we were watching the same interview mate. I never heard him talk over her once. I thought he asked good questions and that she was happy with him. She tends to ramble and he would have to keep her in some sort of boundary. I have heard far far worse…Parkinson for instance was really shit at interviewing though people adored him. But if you watch him, with people other than Robin Williams or Billy Connelly or Barry Humphries as Edna etc. you will see he talks over everyone because with those I mentioned he was dominated by their strong personalities but with others who needed a question to bring them out he was more likely to stammer unintelligible questions, then talk over them or relate some anecdote of his own.
      I hope Pam has been offered to be a national living treasure and insn’t because she turned it down because otherwise it is a travesty.

    The poor lady has a cough & dry throat & that halfwit interviewer doesn't provide her with a glass of brandy or sherry, & seemed to fail to reckonise Pam is a genuine stand up talent in any universe. Poorer people back in the day didn't have tellys, I was 8 when we got a telly & like most poorer people rented the telly,that was the norm. It was only on for a few hours & would shut down every night with the national anthem. Different world, people today would really struggle to survive. Bless Pam for keeping her local accent, I'm from North Wiltshire, & speak pretty much the same way.

  • @shaungillingham4689

    Actually the English spoken in the in the Shakespearen period had a distinctive west country lilt, the poetry in Shakespeare Actually rymes & makes more sense than the later invented received pronunciation, I saw parts of Shakespeare, done in the style of the original English & I could understand it much better, it doesn't always make sense in RP.

    Pam, darling; I would think that the majority of the UK population did not consider Opportunity Knocks was a bit naff and scoffed at - maybe it was scoffed at by the people in 'the industry' ? maybe that's what you meant. Anyway, it certainly paid off, didn't it? 🥰😍🥰😍

    It's so wrong for someone to assign an agents for an artist, it just shows what a scummy loathsome industry it is. Pam should have been able to choose her own agent and dictate the terms, never signed anything away that is her own artistic talent to some low life. It makes me quite angry to think these bastards made so much money from innocent talented people.
