Why did you choose 20% for your long run volume? Not sure I am seeing the connect between that, and what we as coaches should be prescribing to our athletes as their long run volume. Do you mean that the harder longer run / steady state should be no more than 20% length wise to their weekly volume?
Hi Blake. Just to make sure that we're on the same page, I'm saying that kids can and should run more than 20% of their weekly volume for their long runs. 40 mile per week athlete can run 9 mile runs (rather than 8) and the 50 miles per week athlete can run 11, and possibly 12, miles. In my system the long run is a crucial workout, and for some of the year the most important workout of the week. The were a hard and fast rule for decades that the weekly long run should 20 percent of your weekly volume. I first ran more than this as an athlete at the University of Colorado. When I ran 85 mpw in singles, I'd run 20 mile long runs (when 17 miles would have been the 20 percent assignment). I hope this helps!

I did a Fartlek at 5k pace for 45 seconds in the middle of long run. Was that smart?
