- Rail transport modeling, model railroading and railway modelling are very popular leisure activities in Belgium. Therefore, it is not surprising that we often can discover some of the finest model railway layouts or model railroad layouts built by Belgian model makers and model building artists. One of these superb layouts is Ivo Schrapen’s detailed scale model of Hasselt railway station in HO scale.
After more than 100 visits to the railway station of Hasselt in Belgium and after taking more than 1,000 photos, Ivo Schrapen started with the construction of his miniature world in 2003. His layout depicts the station, the tracks, the trains and the railway operations at Hasselt railway station as they were in 2002. The track field in front of the station has been reconstructed true to scale: In reality, the dimensions are 1.6 kilometres and the diorama has a length of 16 meters.
The model railroad is a modular layout, the station part consists of eleven segments, each module is specific but each segment fits without screws on the next one. At the back, behind the scenes, there is a large marshalling yard (fiddle yard) consisting of seven tracks for parking the model trains and model locomotives. All tracks can be driven in both directions. This complexity can only be achieved with a fully automated digital approach. So the whole layout is equipped with DCC interfaces, decoders and networks.

Ja, prachtig. Zelf ben ik aan een immense Amerikaanse baan aan het bouwen. Gelukkig heb je ginds de keuze uit veel private spoorwegen. Ik zelf bouw aan de Southern Pacific in de periode 1975 tot 1990. Ik vind de double stack container wagens gewoon de max. Ja, hier in Europa kunnen ze nog veel leren. Al moet gewoon gezegd zijn de transport van goederen per spoor hier niet echt van de grond gaat komen omdat de afstanden nu eenmaal veel te kort zijn, teveel concurrentie met vrachtvoerders uit het Oosten is en de landen onderling nog teveel restricties opleggen. In de VS gaat het over veel langere afstanden en veel langere treinen, meestal uniblock, van oost naar west en andersom. Het enige wat al verandert is de locs die worden gewisseld en/of worden overgenomen door een andere spoormaatschappij.
Maar toch 5*.

Wow that is impressive. It looks like finescale track too although my eyes are used to OO, and HO is already more prototypical. The attention to detail is amazing, particularly when you consider the size of the whole project. The filming is as wonderful as always, I do appreciate your efforts to compliment the models with realistic viewpoints, thank you!

I like the music,it was created on a Roland EXR-5. I don't know exactly the style, but the POP button was switched on. :D
So elaborate. And to think, he dismantled it at home, carted it to Germany, and set the entire display up again.
This is an important note. It's a lot of work to build the layout. Even more work is involved in dismantling the layout and building it up for exhibitions.
Those builders need to make a Belgium area for mininatur Winderland

Superb.Not many layouts of Belgium do you see,certainly not of this quality.I expected to see some german and dutch locos but not austrian.Do they travel this far?

It’s fabulous however having had the stamina to put up all the overhead electric wires and then run the electrically driven locomotives with the pantographs down is not so impressive!
Znamy, znamy tę makietę. Filmowaliśmy ją również. Udało się nam nawet zarejestrować wypadek! Całość sterowana jest systemem komputerowym, a nie obyło się bez czołowego zderzenia dwóch pociągów!
very well done, though they might need to improve on the trains not beloging together (like the OBB loc that doesn't belong on SNCB territory, or outdated rolling stock next to recent models), makes it look more like toys than replicating modeling.
The other thing is the sound that doesn't really match at times.
