- I read that Rammstein’s music falls under a category called Industrial Metal, and I backed away from the idea a bit, but then Vlad told me this particular song doesn’t. I liked the idea of listening to a German band, so decided to give it a try, and I don’t regret it. In spite of the numerous voices writing that I will not find anything related to the German classical music tradition, I DID and I was not only impressed, but also moved by it.

Hi Amy, glad to know that you're open to songs that don't necessarily have some classical influence to grab your interest. I think that might limit your choices; there are so many sub genres and wide range of rock and pop music to explore.... so far, it's been the boys club, and I'd be curious to your exposure to the female artists, like vocalist and guitarist Eva Cassidy, Joni Mitchell (who composed using her unique guitar tunings), Carole King, Carly Simon, Sandy Denny, and so many more! And do you enjoy the story telling over the melodies? Or do you need a good melody for you to like the story telling?
It’s still early have you found anything that you may consider listening to purely for your own enjoyment? Be interesting to review in a 6 months to a year to see if any impact is made into your listening preferences.

A strong suggestion for you to discover another Rammstein song: The piano version of „Mein Herz brennt“. Till is so expressive within this song and he is accompanied only by a piano.

This is one of the softest songs by Rammstein. It is a great example of (a somewhat modern take on) what is known as a power ballad - a soft song with a hard rock sound added. Rammstein are mostly a lot harder, but also often quite humourous albeit also often with sarcastic bite. As a side note: Most of their music videos are quite amazing!
I wouldn't agree with you that this is one of the softest songs, this is the hardest song they have, in raw emotional power.
And sure it's not Feuer Frei, but most of their songs aren't out there to be heavy stuff, they have a very balanced sound.

Try their 'Zeit' video or 'Deutschland'. Videos and poetry are a work of art with this band. Also, its always the band acting in the video's. They are great actors

Deutschland is definitely an audiovisual masterpiece. I think it's about love/hate relationship with their home country that has both very dark and very good moments in the history.
@@MikkoRantalainen well, yea but there's more to it. The black woman in golden armour (black and gold are two of the three colours of the German flag) represents Germany. Which is the personification of Germany or the German spirit. The video shows the history of Germany, starting with the germanic tribes bound together to fight against the roman empire. The red laser in the video shows the connection of all the events.
It's lovely to see a classical person approaching rock music with wonder and an open heart. Seeing and hearing this through your fresh eyes is fantastic, because you point out things that feel so "natural" to rock fans that we won't even think about them. Plus you call drums "percussions" which is extremely adorable :)))

Rammstein works a lot with classical musicians. Especially with the Dresden Symphony Orchestra. I'll also mention Sven Helbig. 😍
Rammstein doesn't mess around. Their music and their visuals are an experience.
On Rammstein’s current stadium tour the opening act is a pair of classical pianists performing some of their songs as piano duets. Absolutely beautiful. They did release an album of stripped back versions of their songs of which the piano version of Sonne is especially gorgeous. It also featured in the closing credits of the video for their song Deutschland, which is astonishing in its own right, though you’re probably not ready for that yet! If you want more rock with classical from Rammstein then I’d try Mein Hertz Brennt next. And find the piano version of Sonne. Enjoy the journey :)

Nobody can be ready for Deutschland. It's a masterpiece song and a masterpiece video. A true experience.
Till is amazing at conveying all sorts of emotions and his songs run a full gamut of different emotions. They're also very theatrical with their videos. Almost all of them are mini movies. Some of their newer ones have amazing production quality as well. They really take their music as an art in all its aspects, from the lyrics to the music, to the video, to the stage show on tour- they are arguably the best band to see live- and one of the things that sets them apart from most bands is that they keep improving on everything. I started listening to them in the 90s and while most bands tend to release a good album or two and then the quality goes down, Rammstein have consistently improved and evolved.
Hats off to Vlad, he is leading you gently into what can be a very overwhelming, very heavy genre. I can't wait to see where we go next.
What you thought was a bass guitar was the rhythm guitar with some distortion and sustain. They were combining that with heavy bass guitar and drums using deliberate and firm strumming and beats. In the chorus sections they were blending in some chorus vocal samples with keyboard and violins. You're right, the song is so well produced and orchestrated. As was already mentioned, the song is very poetic and classically written. As the rhythm guitar goes into the chorus sections the lead singer lowers his voice and uses a commanding baritone modulation to match the guitar which is a really nice combination.
Ollie and Paul's roles are kinda reversed from what the average band does. Ollie provides the rhythm layer and Paul just adds a layer of crunchy texture.

I'm a relative newcomer to Rammstein too but what I've seen is absolutely brilliant. Their videos are no less than Hollywood movie quality and their live shows are a thing to behold. My only regret is that I don't speak German as I fear the English interpretation probably loses some of the spirit of the original. Rammstein will push the boundaries for you!
Their lyrics are indeed of upmost importance. Almost every single line has a second or even third meaning behind the surface, and simple translations can only provide the first meaning, of course, without all the subtle secondaries beyond. So if you're really interested in Rammstein it's worth to dig a little deeper, linguistically and culturally.
Till Lindemann (the singer) is a true artist, and goes all out for his art. One of his recent "solo" ventures was in his band Lindemann and the depth of his videos are like short movies there as well. The man just does not take "it's good enough" for an answer, he wants a complete and total "Yup, that's it!" every time.
It does but regardless of whether you understand the language or even the meaning of the songs. They are still excellent songs and it's why the band is loved world wide
its best to find lyrics translated by native speakers that allow for footnotes of cultural references that would be lost on american listeners. a good example of this is Deutschland, where if you look at the translated lyrics alone you will interpret the song in a completely different way than intended-- not that rammstein doesnt do it on purpose, they love toeing the line
As a German I know nearly all of their lyrics but still find some new third meanings when I always thought there is a second meaning… Also their videos. Every small detail is a sign and has a meaning. What do Americans think to the song “Amerika”?
It's actually quite common for metal musicians to be classically trained. Metal shares a lot with classical, obviously not in the sound or structure of a piece but often in the chord or scale progression and certainly in the dynamics between high and low ends and harmonies.
This is a most wonderful composition about love, loss and companionship. The encouraging touch on Till’s shoulder when they are setting off by the stream, where he is drinking, tells me that he is already in emotional pain, the lost look of hopelessness in his sad eyes. The concerned look in the faces of his friends, this beautiful song and video breaks my heart 💔 and is perfect in every way. Danke Rammstein.

As the next (and potentially more emotional) Song of Rammstein I would recommend "Zeit". It is one of their latest Songs, also on the softer side of their work, and the visuals again complement the music perfectly. "Ohne dich" gives me goosebumps, but "Zeit" brings me to tears.
Feuer und Wasser from Rosenrot, is also a great one. But the one song that lives rent free in my head is Frühling in Paris from Liebe ist für alle da.
Roter Sand as well, these ballads and their other softer songs really show how far they've come as a band, both in variety and their level of composition.
No matter which album, one puts on with them, the mix in tone between the songs, makes every album an enjoyable one.

@@livedandletdie When it first came out, I tought, well, they're gone soft with age, but then I heard the whole new album, and it's just a complete, great inner journey (for men? maybe not just for men... ), where Zeit is just perfectly placed.
If you liked the emotion he conveyed with his voice you have to watch the video of the piano version of Mein Herz Brennt. It's chilling. Another good song that includes an orchestra is Iron Maiden's Empire Of The Clouds. Bruce Dickinson, the singer, learned to play the piano for that song.
Rammstein is one of my favourite bands. Thank you for taking the time to put up subtitles, they are a fantastic band musically and lyrically imo. I hope you enjoy. If you do try looking into some more of their tracks. ‘Mein herz Brent’ and the contrasting (piano version) are popular but there are so many. The videos are always brilliant and often thought provoking.
6:00 what you heard here were very low-tuned e guitars as well as e bass. most of the time you can't really hear the bass out. Especially when the guitars are tuned so low. In Metal Music, the bass builds the foundation for the guitars to make the song more sturdy and full sounding. Most of the time at least.

In recent months - since their album Zeit came out I've found a peculiar pleasure in having musicians detail their thoughts on Rammstein. I find them an amazing band with exceptional talent!
The song is about cohesion ; the group is taking their dying fellow up to the summit ! The lyrics are like a poem. Rammstein put many afforts in their productions to express them. Thanks for recognize the good artwork of this extraordenairy band.

Every time I watch this video I start to cry. The combination of the sad story in the video, the music and the lyrics is overwhelming.
Rammstein are very much perfectionist. Every little thing they do from the instruments to the video and the mixing is with purpose
I'm a huge Rammstein fan so I'm always excited to someone discover them for the first time. If I remember correctly I think they've cited some classical artists as an influence so I think it's interesting to get a classical perspective. There's always something just under the surface to their music, especially in their lyrics.

It amazes me how nobody ever mentions "Haifisch" when recommending videos with great story telling, humor and lyrics. So many references in that one song / video!

Rammstein, more than any other band in the world, delivers the complete package. Heavy music, but also sensitive, atmospheric, emotional, and sometimes extreme. But they're also the very top when it comes to high quality dramatic music videos, and spectacular live performances. No other band is in the same league in all these aspects.
What I love about Rammstein is that even their harder songs (which this is not, this is probably one of the lightest) are very melodic. It’s not just loud abrasive sound for the sake of it.
The way I feel the video and the song is that Till´s caracter is heartbroken, getting into this event with friends - and that his fall has to do with the blank stair in his eyes, letting go... It is there both before and after the fall.
Maybe I´m wrong but the band always open up for interpretation...

I just saw them live a week or so ago and I’m telling you I fell in love with everything about that band! It was hands down the best show I’ve ever seen in my life and I’ve been to a lot of concerts! They are AMAZING!!!
Rammstein appeals to so many different characters on so many levels - this fine group of highly intelligent artists possibly are Germany's deepest and most complete musical product. Every single one of the six core members is special with the fragile, broken beautiful Lindemann the most prominent of them. Rammstein is a very intense rabbithole, their live concerts are legendary - even if you are not into this kind of musical genre they play your emotions like a fine violin - with the occasional side of e-guitar to shred you to pieces. On one side i'm sad for what probably is going on inside Lindemann but i am so glad to have witnessed their art and let it take me on crazy emotional rollercoasters.
This song is a typical Rammstein ballad, but they are not typical of the band. There texts often contain quotes that non-Germans don't always understand and that can't really be translated.
Rammstein is famous for its live performances. They've taken pyrotechnics to a new level. T-shirts are said to have been sold with the inscription: I was in the front row of a Rammstein concert and survived.
Fun fact: In 1999 they were arrested during the concert for causing a public nuisance and two of them were sentenced to 6 months in prison on probation. After that, they stopped giving concerts in the US for 10 years, presumably to avoid violating their probation. They then gave their first concert at Madison Square Garden and it was sold out within 30 minutes.

this song is one of the best in building up the tension. it's calm at the start during the departing scene, there's still greenery around them and that little stream. the further they get up the mountain the more the tension grows and the music is growing rockier (pun intended ;) )
till's voice is just perfect in this piece and the way he's also building up this tension is amazing
I love this. You seem to be pretty much the opposite of the cliche Rammstein fan. But you perfectly express what I was already experiencing many times with metal and rock music. It's obviously different to classical music especially in the choice of instruments, but the complexity makes it so enjoyable also for people used to classical music. Many people, I talked to in the past didn't understand, what I meant, but for me listening to both, metal and classical music, is the perfect match to me because both contribute to understand the other one.

Till Lindemann (Singer of Rammstein) is a very fantastic Singer. He has a really big singing Range and sing and perform from Rock to classical Songs in a way this happend only one time in this World.
One of my Favorite is "Mein Herz brennt" (My Heart burns). There is Rockversion of this Song and a really creapy but also amazing classical Pianoversion in this Till sings like an classicsinger with an amazing Piano from Sven Hellbig. Till act as creapy Clown in this Video. I really love this kind of Art.
He sing the last 30 years different things in many languages. He is not only the singer of a great german Rockband, he is much more.
Having now reached the end of the song. I LOVED it! it, to me, tried to capture some of the emotional intensity of a lot of German classical music like Beethoven etc. I'm going to explore more of their music now thanks to you!

If you like the classical style, they actually have made a piano version of the song Mein Herz brennt. Its awsome and the way Till sings it is just breathtaking. But on similar to this one I would also suggest Spieluhr, Seemann and Engel

Welcome to Rammstein. Their videos always add to the songs. In some cases, they're so inseparable that the video will always run in mind head when you hear the song. I listen to different genres, but both the extensive world of Classical music and Heavy Metal have been my passions all my life. Each offers a full musical experience in its own way. I have to say from the title I didn't think I was going to like this music. But 6 minutes in I not only remember my German classes from school but I really like this song musically. My opinion may change as we go on but as of this point I have to say Vielen Dank for introducing me to this band!

I highly recommend Mein Herz Brennt, they have a regular version and an orchestra version, and both are extremely beautiful. The orchestra version is haunting and sad.

One dich is a balad. The intro is Flake on keyboard. He's an absolute brilliant pianist. The end of heir absolutely phenomenal song "Deutschland" is gorgeous. If you decide to check that song out, since you may not understand the German language, do NOT take the video clip in the wrong way because it is a song critical of the bloody past of Germany. The song is about how you want to love as well as hate [germ] from the perspective of native Germans. It depicts the band dressed up in several Era outfits, from knights to nazi's. I'm Dutch and I love Rammstein. Their lyrics are controversial (especially to Americans) but important.
A good song and so clean somehow. Moving and beautiful. Good voice and captivating. I really like Rammstein it would be interesting to hear how you would find their more powerful and aggressive music, where the industrial rock is more prominent.

Watching you find so much joy in this makes me SO happy, it's music that I agree speaks to us almost like folk music, but a more modern twist. Very "motivational" - your assessment and experience of the progression has been a pleasure to watch!!
So warmed to see your obvious joy when listening to this. To assist with identifying 'rock' instruments and sounds I would like to suggest Ayreon - The Day that the World Breaks down. A great into to prog, with many moods and not too heavy. The official video shows the instrumentation and gives a glimpse into the mind behind the composition, with the clean audio that lends to analysis.

AYour reaction was a gem!! I could recommend you lots of Rammstein's songs but I cannot think of a limited amount because they are great in their majority. You could basically watch any MV and it doesn't go to waste.
As someone with a classical taste in music, I related to you in everything you said and it felt great. You earned a new subscriber.
Rammstein is the only Hard Rock/Metal group that gets me every time and never stops amaze me, I've been a fan since I was 9 and now i'm in my late 20's. I really hope you react to more Rammstein songs in the future, I'll be looking forward to them :) keep the great work.
Till (the singer) has always been a bit of a perfectionist over the 30 years of the band. When the Pyro doesn't go off during a show, you can tell he's upset. So it's no doubt he goes over these videos over and over again to make sure they are precise and exactly the way he wants them to be before they go out.
If a musician of a completely different genre can appreciate a composition, it means he appreciates a real piece of art.

Loved to see your first time of a song that was one of my teenage heartbreak songs and still gives me goosebumps. Loved how you analyzed the different of the compostion including the visual aspects. The only critic I have are the translations of the german lyrics which are off when it comes to quiet a few lines. I'm a native speaker so I might be a little picky or biased but I felt they are not translating the lyrics in a way they could. MIght not be super essential but still wanted to bring this up. This was my first video of yours and I am looking forward to see more
Till does more than sing. He changes up his voice in many songs to suit the character in the song, as many of their songs have stories. He becomes the character. He might change up his voice into a more eerie and creepy style to suit the song more

Almost 12,000 Amy (and Vlad!)….wow. I must say that when I heard you you were reviewing Rammstein, I was apprehensive. I’ve only heard one song by this band (Du Hast) and I was not impressed. And yet I keep hearing people rave about this metal band. This is only my second song by them, and I’m having a completely different experience. It’s beautiful. Thank you, Vlad, for suggesting this to Amy. It’s opened my eyes to why Rammstein is so highly regarded. To me, the beginning was a lovely “classical” interlude……with feelings of Beethoven for me.

As always, I really enjoy your reactions and analysis. Very well done and insightful. Thank you for including the translated lyrics. Whenever I see a video interpretation of a piece I have concerns it will distract from a more personal interpretation on a first listen. Unless of course this is the artist's intent from the beginning, such as in opera or musicals. I don't think this was the case here, since Rammstein was clearly involved in the video production. Your separate detailed analysis video provided insights into this and is highly recommended. Always a plus when you also enjoy a piece.
I normally agree with the translation not being necessary, but in Rammsteins case the texts are such a major feature that it would take away a lot of the things conveyed in the song.

Great video! This was also my first time hearing music by this band. "Epic" comes to mind to describe their sound (at least in this song). What I find most interesting is your commentary about them being a German band and your associations with "German" music, given your classical background. Scorpions is another German band, yet their song lyrics are all in English (I think). They have a much different sound and feel, yet they're still German. Anyway, I enjoyed your first listening video and I'm off to check out the analysis now! Thanks for posting!
They recorded their songs in German as well, it's just we got the English releases for obvious reasons. Just like Nina did with 99 Red Balloons or the German release 99 Luftballons

Hi, first time watcher. I'm enjoying your insights very much. I think the way you are open minded and treat this kind of music as an artform in its own right to be very welcome.
Additionally, really small thing but I loved it. You were talking while the video was playing, but when something happened you stopped yourself to watch. That showed that even though you were addressing the audience you were still listening to the music and paying attention to the video. It's really great to see that level of attention paid, and probably speaks for your general respect for music.
Rammstein is really underappreciated for the sheer effort they put into each piece. Hard or soft they all have such depth and resonance. Mind you, some of them may be about subjects both absurd and or crude but its all in good fun and very well done.
It is like Goethe, Wagner and Metallica have a Jam session 😄

First listen for me as well. Since metal and hard rock are not my cup of tea I expected to hate this, but there were actually some things I liked. The slow build up from strings to band to heavily distorted guitars was quite interesting. I also liked the sudden change to quiet acoustic guitars after one of the choruses. And yes, the visuals really add to the drama and excitement. So in the end certainly not as annoying as I expected.
