When did CZcams become such gatekeepers over this shit?
the term ''bust'' lost pretty much all its meaning because of idiots on twitter calling every young players a bust when they dont put up McDavid numbers
People forget that Yak was the leading scorer among rookies and his sophomore year was with a rookie coach, Eakins, who ruined the careers of multiple talented Oilers from Justin Schultz to Eberle and Hall. As someone who was watched every single AHL game with Schultz, Nuge, Hall, and Eberle during the lockout I can safely say that the Oilers ruined Yak as much as his agent and his own attitude did.
Oh man, don't get me started on Eakins. He's the type of coach that tries to force players to go against their internal wiring. Like trying to force Ovi or Phil Kessel to play defense or they get benched. That shit might have worked 50 years ago. No, it didn't work 50 years ago either. And I'm not saying give the players the keys to the car.
No but "Laf" is a bust. Not even debatable.
It’s x now
@@veritasinvicta8128go take his spot and put up numbers then
The thing about Laf that a lot of people don't seem to get, is that he didn't join a dumpster team who immediately made him the centerpiece of the organization. His closest analog is really Tyler Seguin from the 1a,1b draft with Hall. Boston was a team with talent already, and so Seguin on Boston didn't look all that great, because he was getting 3rd line minutes.
This is the first year Laf hasn't been just shoved on the 3rd line with a few "chances" to play up higher, because the two previous coaches (he is on his 3rd coach, first real NHL coach) were afraid to put him on the right wing. He still doesn't touch the top power play unit. So it is a very different situation to a Hughes or Bedard who came into garbage teams and immediately were forward #1 on the depth chart in every offensive situation.
So you can't really look at Laf's production overall and compare him to other top pics who came in and were given the keys to the organization.
Good point I hadn’t thought of that
Exactly. People do 0 analysis into his career. They don't look at his TOI. His first 2 years it was below 14 mins. Last year it was 15:13. Now it's finally above 17
They don't consider he was on lines with people like Goodrow and Kravstov
They don't consider his lack of PP time. (He's got 282 minutes. Stutzle has 717) For some reason hockey-reference isn't showing 20-21 PP TOI for either, so those totals seem to be for 3 seasons. And then people are terrified to compare just even strength numbers.
Quinn & Gallant both punished him for mistakes making him play reserved and scared
Right. Any player approaching 60 points without any power play time is simply incredible let alone someone under 25.
Good point!
I've been saying the same thing he never got a true opportunity to play he's game before this year he was playing 3rd line minutes he wasn't allowed to play his game bottom line never had a chance but now you can see how talented he really is because he got the opportunity to play he's game just wait until he gets more PP just watch out.
It's so strange how loosely bust gets thrown around cause I've always seen people say his ceiling is like a 60-70pts player but then the same people will call him a bust. Is he likely to be the best player from his draft class no but if he can still be a productive top 6 forward imo that by no means makes him a bust
He’s playing a lot with a 110 point superstar on a Rangers team that will win the presidents’ trophy. Meanwhile Tim Stutzle has more points playing on a garbage Ottawa team with no real superstar to play with.
I think eventually I see him becoming a 100 point player by the time he’s 25-26
@Siksdev Panarin will finish top 5 in Hart Trophy voting this year, he’s on another level.
Stutzle has been playing with Giroux and Brady Tkachuck, and also has top line mins as well as top PP time. Saying he plays with scrubs is flat out wrong@@user-ji3il6ce2o
And Perreault is also Québecois like Lafreniere. Perreault has both nationality and he speak french and English@Siksdev
Matthews and McDavid set the bar so high for 1st overalls that any 1st overall pick that doesnt score 40 or get 100 points in their first season is considered a bust. Give em time
Right? We've all seen bedard, that kid is going to be amazing in a few years
Yea if every first overall pick turns into a Mc David then he wouldn’t be special anymore 😂. Mc Jesus will be a dime a dozen. There’s a reason he’s called a generational talent.
@@stiben718 it’s not really about how much better he is than everyone. He’s amazing. I don’t think we’ll see a player like him again. It’s more that he and Matthews immediately started playing NHL games and having a massive impact on games
@@weenieh23 that’s the exact reason they had massive impacts immediately…generational talents…Which means they are that much better than everyone else. And never say never, people back then didn’t think there would be anyone in the future even come close to Gretzky…Mc David might actually be better when all is said and done.
I feel bust is reserved for 25+ year old players
Or a player that doesn’t do anything till like 23
@@Shays375if they do something they aint a bust
@@eis8448 I said if they dont
Not for overall number ones who put up paltry numbers. I would feel different if " "Laugh" had gone 20-32 in the first round.
"Laugh" is a bust to everyone but arrogant Rangers fans.
I'd personally like to see some love for the Stars, especially after that 5-0 shutdown on the Oilers completing back to back shutouts for Oettinger. Number 1 team in the West, and still slept on
Fair point, but it's a smaller NHL market. Dallas is huge, but the following isn't as large compared to NY or Toronto
I was looking for this comment. Jamie Benns fingerprints were all over that game. Statement Game.
I always thought people were giving up on Laffy too early. Love to see some respect for him.
People need to chill with him and slaf. Joe Thorton had like 7 points as a rookie and look how he turned out. Some players need more time
I'd even say MOST players need more time! Only the absolute superstars can already be dominant in their first season among pros.
Slaf looked awful in his first year because he wasn’t used to playing in North America where the leagues are more physical and fast-paced than European hockey leagues. Keep in mind that Slaf had his head down a lot in his first year as he likely wasn’t expecting people to hit him as that probably didn’t happen in his old league. But Laf on the other hand grew up in North America and understands how the game is played here.
Laf and Slaf will for sure both be PPG players in the very near future.
Props to Laf! Great thing about him is his physical play. Dude would throw down with anyone and lays the body. Definitely a 16 game player!
Lafreniere was completely stunted by Quinn and Gallant. They gave him shit minutes. Put him on a terrible 3rd line. And if he made mistakes, even as a f'n teenager, he'd get benched
He also wasn't on the PP units. When he was in was PP2 and it was terrible
Now he's on PP2 which is better, but since PP1 is so good PP2 sees even less time than they already would
Wanna hear some even strength numbers?
Lafreniere has more even strength goals than:
Aho
Miller
Boeser
Ehlers
Pettersson
Draisaitl
CONNOR MOTHERFUCKING MCDAVID
Crazy
This is what happens when you cherry pick stats
@@pavolspiska5172 lmao this isn't cherry picking. You are not smart
@@BKDBut wow what a comeback, I am so hurt and scarred 😂. You didn’t even back up the claim you just said ur wrong 😂
@@pavolspiska5172 lol a comeback to what? You making the idiotic claim that isolating even strength stats BECAUSE HE ISN'T ON THE POWERPLAY is cherry picking?
Lmao. I mean how dumb can you be to see two players, both have variable A, only one has variable B, and you deem it "cherry picking" to compare variable A instead of comparing A+B?
You're just mad at the fact
Could not agree more, Laf has been improving each year. Not as good as Hughes has improved, but hey you never know what a few more years will bring as he is more robust than Jack.
I feel this is Lafs first real NHL year.
Quinn and Gallant never trusted him (may have been warranted or not well never know) and kept him bottom 6 pretty much.
Lavi has shown trust in the kid, and i think hes reciprocating that trust so far!
also can we stop thinking a first overall is automatically a mcdavid. the internet and hockey media hypes these kids so much now. You could be a menace in Jr back in the day but no one really knew unless they followed jr hockey like pierre mcguire lol
He looks like a vet lol
Slaf is definitely not a bust
He was a terrible pick for number one overall definitely going to be a solid nhler tho
He's solid but not out of character for Habs to go to the tea leaves like they're some sort of hockey savants.
@@hockey_highlights_and_more Slaf confidently leads his draft class this season in points, hits and will probably finish tied for goals and takeaways with Cooley. and if you compare second half of their season, he is by far the best with no competition and seems to grow into that role. He can be a reliable PPG power forward as soon as next season. He is outproducing everyone from last 3 year drafts except Bedard and Johnston. Outproducing last years Calder winner. How on earth was he a terrible pick?
@@hockey_highlights_and_more how is he terrible pick if hes best from all players drafted in 2022 so far?
@@hockey_highlights_and_more what you say just don’t make sense. Who’s better than him on his draft? Not his fault if there is no superstar during his draft
Dude I've been watching your videos forever, and seeing how much they've improved is crazy. Your takes are spot on. Then you back it up with sick highlights. I love when you talk Habs the most tho. Cant wait until we are a playoff team and you make a video about the rebuild! One can hope anyway...
Yo; you are getting better at this stuff, honestly look forward to your vids more lately and just wanna thank you for covering it all.
Good Game.
He’s gonna have a point per game next year calling it
Chris Drury always stepped up
He just needs to be on pp1
Over the last 25 game hes ppg
i can't believe he's only 22.
damn. i forget he's only 22
a big part of his breakout is him finally not playing 3rd line minutes. the past few years hes sniffed the top 6 maybe a couple times, but now that hes getting the minutes he deserves, hes playing really well, and i love it. if he just got more pp time, he could be pushing a point per game, and maybe even getting close to 40 goals. he has been robbed quite a bit this year, he finishes on some of those and nobody would be talking. he may not ever live up to the #1 overall status, but i wouldnt change that pick and hope he has a long and fruitful career with the rangers
Love your take Johnny, keep it up.
I'm so happy he's regaing his confidence and performing well. He was so dominating and wecare now seeing what he is capable of. I predict he will be 10-15 points better next year.
All successful players follow the same growth curve after the draft, more or less, and that peaks around 8 years after they are drafted. As long as they continue to grow, draft picks aren't a bust. Don't compare Lafreniere (or anyone) to McDavids and MacKinnons, compare them to themselves 1-3 years ago.
Laf has a least 9 less goals than expected too
Good enough to score 30 goals
LAFFY is obviously getting better and growing into his 1st pick form. He literally is going to finish the season with 20+ more points than he had last year.
Slafkovsky has 26 points in his last 28 games; how is he a bust when he just turned 20 a week ago. His 0.93 points/game over the previous 28 games has him virtually tied with Jack Hughes, Jason Robertson, Brady Tkachuk and Alexis Lafreniere in that time frame. Slaf is the top-scoring player in the NHL from the 2022 draft year !!!! HOW IS BEING NUMBER 1 OUT OF 200 drafted players a BUST !!!
Love your analysis!
Keep it up!!
i think the problem is if they come into the league and aren’t immediately playing like crosby or mcdavid or bedard they’re immediately labeled a bust by people 💀
you've got a dope channel bro, keep it up!
Good job on this video! I fully agree! Its so interesting to watch how such players step by steo prove all doubters were wrong. Time always shows the truth
Great video as usual,sir!
I’m telling you he is hitting 70 plus points next year mark my word
Laf and slaf both proving they ain’t busts
He has 56 points, (27g & 29a) and is not on pp1. And has more 5v5 goals than some of the leagues best. This year he was given a chance on a proper line, and he has been incredible. If he was on pp1, he would have at least 25more points….. the naysayers aren’t looking at the full picture
i hate the bust narrative for fucking 20 year old players, mcdavid and mathews destroyed the standard for first overall pick but everyone forgets edmonton had 4 first overall picks in 2010-2015 and the 3 who are not named mcdavid were good but not game breakers. slaf and laf might not be generational talents but they are still good players who can find a place in the NHL, calling a kid a bust when he hasnt even gorwn into his body or learned how to use it is insanity
27 goals and will finish around 60 points. 22 years old. Outrageous for anyone to call him a bust. McDavid and Crosby's of the world are a once in a generation player. A hockey player's prime starts around 29 and can last all the way to 32. That means Lafrienere has another 7-10 years to build on this year's numbers, where he'll finish close to 30 goals. No reason this guy can't be a future perennial 35-40 goal scorer every year at this pace. Kakko is another story. 6 seasons and hasn't really had a single standout year yet, and has regressed this year. He still has some trade value. I'd move him in the offseason.
Hockey “fans” when the first overall pick doesn’t score 4.2e^ quadrillion points every period in their rookie season: he’s a BUST! 🤬😭
I was so annoyed when everybody was calling slaf a bust a 18 give the runner a chance ffs. Now he might have 50 points in a season at 19-20 years old. I don’t know too many players who have done that and im sure he will become so much better and a legit top line power forward.
Wait until the playoffs. The last month he has been over a point per game he is hot at the perfect time everything is clicking, he’s got the confidence to put with the skill. His skating has gone from a weakness to an asset the way he can blow through the neutral zone deking past defenders to set up in the o-zone is outstanding. He really keeps breaking through what people make his ceiling to be. The crazy thing is he isn’t even on the top PP. Wait another year, get him on the PP and we have the future franchise superstar and next captain of the Rangers. To be honest if he plays like he has the last month he is an under the radar conn smyth candidate of all goes well down the stretch. LFGR Let’s plan the parade boys!
"plan the parade" lol maybe hold your horses on that one, it's way too early to be saying things like that
Johnny answered my prayers about rangers content!!!!!
I always thought it was weird how Laf struggled. He was so damn good in the CHL and WJC. He just seemed like a no brainer 1st liner.
I'm no hockey engineer but personally I felt Laf paid a price by being put on a team that is super strong right from the get go....no time to play and no place for usual natural normal beginner's mistakes. On any other team he would have had at least 5 min more of play time each game and way less pressure to develop fast. But...the good news is by playing with a super strong team he can and does learn from the best and it shows. Great chat and video.
There all going crazy anout fighting, it's part of the show, it's entertaining.
This kid is going to be a superstar
Jimmy Veasy went after Lazar like he owed him rent money and Keandre Miller ragdolled Marino so bad i felt bad for the kid
LAffy has been amazing all year. Once he got off the kid line and put with players who are at his level it all changed
I still remember the "Fail for Nail" thing.
Even Hughes was called a bust for years!
0:50 you are using hindsight when Aaron Ekblad was a grown ass man at 18 years as a RHD. He was the best dman available and the panthers needed defense badly.
Glad to see he's doing good in the playoffs.
Laffy has really come around this season… playing with Panarin and Troch really let him gain some much needed confidence to find his game. He was terrible on the 3rd line and a completely new amazing player this year on arguably the best line in the nhl in Troch, Panarin, Laffy
I've been waiting for this vid 😁
Always want more rangers content
He should have 10-15 more goals this season with all the chances he had. But he is heating up at the right time rn going into the playoffs
Love your videos
The comparisons to Crosby probably play a role in people calling him a bust. I always thought those were flat out ridiculous. He’s his own player with his own style and he’s coming into his own. Far from a bust
Whats funny though is if you watch him below the goal line or along the boards it is similar to Crosbys game. Not identical by any means, but you can see who he emulated his game after.
You should do a Stanley cup playoffs prediction video like who makes the playoffs and who wins the cup and in how many games!
More rangers coverage! ❤
He’s literally the only ranger I like.
huh? what da
Its funny, the other Jonny I watch on Mornin cup of Hockey also talks often on Lafreniere
“Such a bust” 😅😢
“Makes me bust” 😂😊
I always figured the kid would find his footing, but Kakko on the other hand, he is dangerously close to being a bust. A bit understandble because he had the same obstacles as Lafreniere and more injuries to deal with but I just don't see him ever playing up to being the second pick in the draft that he was
He has turned it around. He is changing my mind.
Now people will just shut up!
How many times I told people to... "BE PATIENT!!!! THEY ARE KIDS!!!"
Mostly Slafkovsky who came from Scandinavia countries which the hockey style out there like the European's are SO MUCH DIFFERENT than American Hockey style...
Take example of MacKinnon, it took 4 years to him to be a worthy star! Now, he's a "Rules of Nature" and everybody are kissing his ass!
Same for Jack Hughes at New Jersey! Worst 1st season for a 1st OV pick... "Bust! Bust!" Now everybody is kissing his ass!!
Laffy played limited time after quite some times because the Rangers were STACKED.
This season, he has a revelation season and now look at his real value and talent!
Slafkovsky started badly like Hughes plus being injured!
Despite being a big boy, he was eaten by the Lions... Now... He's the young Lion who wants to show to the vets "Hey Old Doggies... Let the Youngs eat the Olds!" with so much progression in just a year... While he played European/Scandinavia hockey style during all his child years!!
There you go... Mic drop! Goodbye haters and couchpotatoes!
Rangers fan here who was guilty of calling this guy a bust but man there was so much hype
Aaron ekblad is a great first overall pick imo. great top 4 defenseman
Do an update about how he's doing in the playoffs!
Nail is a legend
hes not a bust yet but hes pretty damn close. a first overall pick that hasn't even scored 60 pts in his 4 years on a playoff team isn't good.
Slafkosky is not a bust. He got hurt half way through last season and they shut him down. This year he’s having the best season of anyone from his draft class. He just set a team record for point by a teenager, the Habs have been around for 75+ years, so that ain’t no small feat. Ridiculous comment
Considering how many guys have been having career years at 25-26 and older it's hard to call him a bust considering he's only 22. Guys like him who may take a while to develop are much more common than your McDavid and Matthews. It's the same as letting somebody like Aaron Rodgers sit behind Farve for 3 years before becoming what he became. I just think it's ridiculous calling somebody a bust or using that term because they don't become an All-Star within their first year or two.
These guys are so good. Anyone who makes the NHL is talented. My disbelief is that at this level there are guys way above in skill level. That bell curve has been proven. 😂
MORE RANGERS CONTENT YES
Definitely not a bust. This guy will score 25 to 30 for the rest of his career
Chris Drury was the man
50 points playing along 2 guys having career years he really proved all the doubters wrong!!
does the NHL claim copyright on this video?
prob never going to be a superstar like he was expected to become, but has slowly figured out how to play at the NHL level.
The coach has the ability to make or break the player
Please more rangers content.
He’s not great but he’s good. That’s all he needs to be, let him continue to develop
Not all first-overall picks are going to come out guns blazing from the start. Laff has 56 points and is not on the pp1. He is not a bust and is getting better.
Laf is my uncles 2nd cousin no joke
tu est Québecois ca c'est sur et on est content pour Alex et sa famille
Confidence. The main thing that changed was his confidence.
Almost all of those are even strength points too. No PP1 time
1:10 Ekblad as an 18 year old RHD had 39 points in 81 games. He’s 3rd in his draft class for PS and the next closest defenseman to him in PS were picked at 55 (B. Montour) and 108 (Devon Toews)
Took Lafrenière 3 seasons into his career to get 39 points at age 21.
Was I the only one who found it interesting that in the brawl the centers didn't go at it. IT looked like the Ranger center knew exactly who he wanted to go with. He dropped the gloves and went right to the Left D man. Everyone else basically squared up with who was in front of him. IT actually took the Devil center a couple seconds to find a partner
They’re actually buddies. Goodrow didn’t want his friends first fight to be with him. The Athletic did an article about it yesterday. Good eye
@@stevenbrodeur3023 ahhhh that makes a ton of sense
@stevenbrodeur3023 I thought maybe he had beef with that Dman. Bahl I think. I'm unless fan neither of these teams are mine lol but kinda love/hate the Rempire State Building lol
I wouldn’t say he’s a bust, but he’s certainly not the generational talent he was hyped up to be, or being called the next Crosby. Same with Wright
Laf will be a solid player , maybe a border line star
Maybe
He’s had one decent season. Calm down lol let’s see how he does when he gets his first real contract. You’re a first overall pick, you’re expected to be the face of the franchise. I can think of at least 4 other rangers before I think of Lafrenière and of those is Rempe
Yeah, because you just don't know very much, apparently. (DISCLAIMER: LET'S BE REAL, YOU AIN'T READING THIS BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOU WRONG)
You're not expected to be the face of a franchise when you're picked by an already decent team. Rangers only had a 12.5% chance of getting that pick. They were 37-28-5 the season they won that pick (COVID season,) and made the playoffs
It's not the Rangers' fault that you apparently can't name Mika, Panarin, Kreider, Fox, Trocheck, Trouba, Shesterkin
And you should perhaps do even the slightest amount of analysis into his career. Check out how the PP1 unit is Panarin, Mika, Kreider, Fox, & Trocheck, is one of the top PP units in the league, and therefore Lafreniere's PP time is massively reduced. Could compare even strength goals, but you're scared.
You could also read about how Quinn and Gallant punished him and benched him for any rookie mistakes. How this is his first season with above 15:13 TOI
Are you a ranger fan?
It's not CZcams that's not a fan of fighting. It's the NHL that does not show fighting. I have seen plenty of muders on CZcams.
