New Yorkers will vote for a new mayor in November 2021. But the June Democratic Party primary is likely to decide who the next mayor will be. If Andrew Yang wins, he will become the first Asian-American to run New York City. But two long-time residents in Manhattan’s Chinatown are split over their support for Yang.

Many folks commented here do not live in the US or cannot vote in NYC. If you look at all the pre-election polls so far, most voters are voting within their own race and religions. In NYC, 43% White, 24% Black, 29% Hispanic, and 14% Asian. It's extremely difficult for any Asians to run for mayor (likewise for the federal elections), and Asian American population itself is very diverse. It's okay to disagree with Yang's policies, but you have to credit Yang's ability to raise the visibility of Asian in US politics. And, stop calling Yang the "tourist."
He is not a tourist he is migrant
@Gustavo Max Yah reality is much offensive
Like in China American has no right to rule even a white people born and raised in China American is American not Chinese
That actually gives Yang more credibility when outsiders want him to represent them, but can't have him yet.

I think it’s really interesting how they display two very different value systems: not just values. Victor speaks in terms of groups and communities. Karlin speaks in terms of individuals. Neither are wrong; they are both completely right.
Nope, Karlin is wrong when he says Yang came from wealth. He's a son of first generation immigrant from Taiwan, and his dad was a poor potato farmer or something, and yang had to study and work his way up. Even if he grew up in the suburbs and not Chinatown, so what? That just meant Yang had an even harder time because he had to fit in with non Chinese and non Asians and had no one to culturally relate to in that way they have in Chinatown.
So of course yang understands the struggle, he's a son of first gen immigrant who grew up in the 70-80s, racism is nothing new and I wouldn't say yang came from privilege or is "snooty" as Karlin put it.
@@ex0duzz Coming from first generation can't be rich? The beauty of (old) America is that people can drastically improve their lives within one generation. Mr. Andrew Yang got into Philip Exeter for high school -- do you know how much that cost? He then went to undergrad at Brown University? Want to guess how much that costed? Karlin said what he said because Mr. Andrew Yang completely butchered his stance on public education in NYC, a point that 90+% of NYC Asians care about -- and showed that he is even out of touch with hardworking Asians or he stands ready to throw NYC Asians under the bus to please the non-Asians so he can win.

Exactly…that guy frankly is a joke. So Adams is the immigrant that will understand the Asian immigrant experience better? Yang was probably the closest you’re going to get for an Asian mayor, and they’re splitting hairs and saying he doesn’t care about the color of their skin. It’s very mixed messaging. He doesn’t care about their color, but they need to fully have experienced their immigrant story. Well, excuse me, but that person will most likely be a POC.
As a Chinese Canadian from Vancouver Canada, also home to a large Chinese population, Victor Huey might be loud and annoyingly obnoxious but he is also right. As long as Asians are split, we will never have our voice heard in politics as Chinese Candidates in municipal elections here never fair well either. This is because the status quo knows our vote is split and takes advantage of that fact by symbolically trotting out a Asian Candidate every time there is an election for show but really to split the Asian Vote. @@suprememasteroftheuniverse SCMP made this confrontational video to dramatize and draw attention to the divide in our community. We actually work and get along together in the same organization fighting racism and xenophobia against our community. We hope to get people to listen to both sides of the debate. Yes as a minority within the minority groups, we are small percentage by comparison. The United States is at a tipping point between Black/brown and white with a racial issues that no longer be ignored. If America is to become a true multi cultural model for the rest of the world, we have to find a way to live together, and the discussion is not only in black and white terms. Asians are under attack because we have been quiet and endured and didnt fight back, that time is over. This video was made to spark that conversation!
This guy's so mad
Victor has right ideas about current politics around NY and US in general from voter's perspective.
Wake up!!!! 😀
@@pangoprime8674 Trust me that I am fully awake after listening to Victor @ 2:14.
I wish Andrew Yang ran for Govenor of California... Andrew Yang is a business man, Rather business man than politician...
Totally agree, vote for someone’s politics, not their color
#YangGang
All other candidates will continue to treat Asian-American as third class citizen. It matters most.
I hear people say they only voted for Hilliary because she is a woman or Obama because he is black. That shouldnt have anything to do with who you pick.
Sounds like a strawman argument lol not very logical
It's funny when he said wake up, the guy on the other side of that door behind him just left. Lol
I love the chinese guy with the New york Italian accent
it's not Italian, it's new yawK accent!
Oh my.. the first guy... he's doing a better job scaring away votes than persuading.
ANDREW YANG.👏🏻👏🏻
Vote Andrew yang. Let the other American's know don't mess with us or we Asian can vote together and flip your government. It's a win win situation.
Andrew is just another neoliberal trying to run for mayor and wont actually do anything to change the status quo. I'm Chinese and I despise Yang. If I lived in NYC I would vote for Wiley. You don't vote for candidates soley based on skin color, I care about policy. His policy is bs.
I think the logic here is somewhat flawed, you don't need to vote for an Asian guy to show that your numbers count, you need to UNANIMOUSLY vote for one person, doesn't matter if this person is Asian or not. That will do the job to show others that the need of your people counts.
@@TL-fe9si the logic behind is They still mock us that we Asian don't vote. They don't include us in their polling data.
Like the black vote for Obama, asians have to vote in 1 block. I would prefer Yang but it really doesn't matter who. The asian vote will always be taken granted until then.
The majority of blacks may have voted for Obama but people like myself were not on board initially. I supported Hillary Clinton until it became apparent that Obama was the better candidate. No group is monolithic and it is disingenuous to think that it will occur for any group. Smart people vote their beliefs and platforms while cultists vote otherwise. The dynamic for a minority candidate is very different than a white candidate, many times they actually are able to do less because of ethics concerns. Whites generally are not worried by ethics issues because they have been doing otherwise for so many years that it is the norm for them to only propel issues that benefit them.
There was alot females I believe that voted for trump which is hilatious
Yang can unite.
I love Yang but we can see by now that this statement was a myth. Somehow, not sure how, he has become one of the most polarizing figures in politics.
Yang’s parents are Taiwanese which is its own separate country.
Like Atlantis
@@tazzioboca wdym?
Boy do I got news for you. "Taiwan" is a political concept, not a cultural or ethnic one. They might be "Taiwanese" on the island, but in America they speak Chinese , write chinese, eat chinese food, they are chinese American.
@@GIN.356.A shut up westerner
@@leebinpoggersmomento6101 lol it's a fact tho. And for the record "Taiwan" only exists because we let it exist as a thorn in China's side. So you better pray we "westerners" don't feel you have outlived your usefulness.
Thanks East American Morning Post
If you wanna base you’re vote on race, look what happened to the black community after Obama, make smart decisions not trending choices
Using Mandarin on a slogan, that's a bold statement right there, especially amidst racism against asian americans in this pandemic
Karlin, I can understand you not wanting to be racist, and to vote according to someone’s character, and not skin color. But let’s face it, we Asian Americans have been marginalized and ignored politically. It’s time to give articulate, educated, smart Asian Americans our vote!
Yang should just say, “if you don’t vote for me you ain’t Asian.” It seemed to work well for Joe Biden. OH WAIT…he’s part of the establishment!
Plot twist: the man who yells one probably is not going to vote( barking dog seldom bites 😆) while the calm talking man is going for Andrew in last hour and that's called PSYCHOLOGICAL POLITICS 😂
Andrew Yang’s humane and data driven approach can transform a city in broader ways as well. New York City has a chance to go from existential crisis to a new level of functionality and thriving, but it needs a catalyst and a fresh set of eyes on its time-worn systems.Yang and Garcia are campaigning together to stop Adams momentum, they did the math!Bloomberg has no experience running the city, he did fine for three terms! We need to get out the vote to defeat the entrenched political party bosses who make bad decisions for the city
As a Chinese American I’m split in the middle I do vote on what aligns with me (policy of the candidates first) it just so happens that I align with Andrew’s policy and vision but certainly not his race people are in trouble no one gives a f about race just help us get better and the candidate that can do that has my vote whether he’s Asian or not
A Vote for Yang is a Punch against Sinophobia.
That bearded guy is suspicious. Investigate that guy. 🤔
What are you dealing, man? Something illegal? 🤣
I think this is awesome and cool and I am Hispanic. Colorado native. It's about time. I even voted for the guy
"Just because his Asian and doesn't mean I automatically vote for him" well said gentlemen. Do not use race as advantage.
True we are all different but On every official document. They put Asian in one category.
They think we are minority. Now is time to vote together and upgrade to majority. Only then they will change policy.
@@mulaa999jastoo I'm asian from Singapore. And it's just dumb they're want to grow into larger communities. America already democratic free nation, how much freedom should foreigner be given to stay in commonwealth country? It's just too much bs from politicians. Everyone want to live a happier life than being told it's not enough.. sad af.
@@TrailblazingTales23 You're an Asian in Singapore where you are the vast vast majority. I am an Asian American that lived in the US since I was 4 years old. Your experiences are completely different. I am absolutely the minority and I have close to zero representation in leadership. Asians in this country are the LEAST represented in government. My vote matters less than anyone else's vote. Of course we should come together. Just because Yang is Asian isn't enough to vote for him, I agree. But he's smart, charismatic, has integrity, data-driven, and knows how to lead. The fact that he's Asian is absolutely a cherry on top and I'm not afraid to say that.
@@dannyy8619 boooooooooo. I go sleep. Too much American drama 😴
why so mad? that guy is so full of anger
Because Asians are under attack, why wouldn't he be mad?
How much did Eric Adams pay that guy to say Eric Adams understands Chinatown more than Yang?
Probably got a mailed check straight from his Jersey residence 🤣
As a Mexican-American living in NYC, my first choice was Andrew Yang...I’m disappointed that he conceded, I’m not on board with neither Adams or Sliwa
This is great
Ha! Gangs of New York 2. Starring your grandfathers.
I hope people in China think all Asian Americans turn into these 2 guys once you get some white hair. These guys are hilarious.
Lol that Oji-tan is intense
2:14 That's gonna be my Morning Alarm From now on 😂 .
To be fair these guys have a fair point when it comes to voting for yang.
I think many others also negate from voting for Andrew Yang after his public stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict, voicing support for the israeli military and government even after their atrocities towards the Palestinians. That really cast away lots of support for him. Also people had realised that Yang isn't the same as his diligent father. His father IS the immigrant success story. Yang isn't. He just grew up on his father's hard work.
He NEVER voiced support for the Israeli military or its government. All these leftists that swarmed him on that tweet either had reading comprehension issues or couldnt skip a moment to check their confirmation biases and dunk on him.
Being supportive of the victims of violence ON BOTH SIDES is not an endorsement of violence as his nuanced position on the topic is for the 2 state solution so that the violence can stop.
You can't fool me john malkovich
Wow, Asian American with Italian New Yorker twang…. How you doing…
