- Lake Tahoe is the clearest lake in the United States. It's one of the deepest lakes in the world, and one of the oldest, at 2 million years old. Set in the Sierra Nevada along the border of California and Nevada 2/3 in California and 1/3 in the State of Nevada. It's is one of the most pure bodies of water in the world with 99.994% of the water pure. Commercially distilled water is 99.998% pure. Lake Tahoe never freezes completely. There are fifteen ski resorts in and around the lake. The water surface sits at an average elevation of 6,225.1 ft or 1.2 miles above sea level.
