  • This wasn't the video I planned on making for my newly purchased Prusa MK4 3D Printer. Unfortunately, I am continuing to run into lots of issues.
    The good news is the Prusa Support team rocks & wants me to send it back so they can review it & see what's wrong with it - potentially preventing future issues.

    UPDATE - wow you all are some wild 3D Detectives! Yeah if you go to the 35:00 mark in my live unboxing of the MK4 it’s my first test print - fan is not working - does look like the wiring is wrong on the unit which might explain the clogs & extrusion issues I was seeing
    ORIGINAL Comment - By the way... this all took place within the first 24 hours of me using the machine - it's with DHL and on its way back to Prusa Support 🤘

      No offense but how the hack can someone with 3D printing expirence not see that the fans are not turning on when they should be? Thats like basic troubleshooting checking if there is a cooling / temperature issue...

  • @kailin1496
    @kailin1496 Před rokem +177

    I think the wires for the hotend cooling fan and the part cooling fan are switched as I noticed the part cooling fan turning on during the first layer whilst the hotend cooling fan was not, usually the part cooling fan is turned off during the first layer and the hotend cooling fan is turned on when the hotend temp is above 50c .That could have been a be a big reason you might be experiencing jams from a phenomenom known as heat creep where the heatsink starts to heat up and the plastic becomes sticky and melty too early and that usually causes jams.

    • @michael.bruton
      @michael.bruton Před rokem +13

      I just watched his unboxing video and I think you're 100% right. The part cooling fan was on during the first layer while the hotend fan was off. I then see the hotend fan kick on after the first 2-3 layers. So they're definitely reversed.

      Nice catch. I noticed that the nozzle fan wasn't running but I didn't realize that the other one was when it shouldn't have been. That's probably most of his problem.

      This also caught my eye during the print you showed in the video. The hotend fan is off during the first layer, that's why the nozzle is clogging. On the other layers is on, thus no clogging. The stand has a huge first layer, that's why it consistently fails and the other prints are ok. The dragons seem to be on the edge

I'm still miffed.

    To display print quality, it is critical to shine light across the side so shadows from uneven layers can be seen. Just bouncing the light off the print at 45 degrees hides all the imperfections and doesn't show me anything. It would be great if the actual surface roughness could be characterized for different printers numerically. I just don't need another printer that can't produce a flat side surface.

      @tmilker Před rokem +1

      @@UncleJessy It seems to be spinning fine with the little dragon things that you got printed. My guess is bad pre-sliced file(I don't use these) or bad fan configuration in your slicer or maybe bad wiring since you had so many other mechanical issues. I don't know why manufacturers even make the extruder fans controllable. They should run any time the heater is active, there are no positives to letting the user control it.

    • @richardcaracoza6782
      @richardcaracoza6782 Před rokem +1

      My experience with e3d hotends in the past. If the heatsink heats up due to lack of cooling, it will cause the plastic to melt early and cause it clogg.

  • @ChrizRockster
    @ChrizRockster Před rokem +3

    Looked like a fair bit user error to me for someone not used to printing on a Prusa or building Prusa's.
    Anybody who builds printers would carry out checks such as test to 50°C on each heater to check rise and corresponding fan function.
    Belt Tensioning is a skill that is learnt.
    Prusa will resolve quickly as usual I'm sure to provide belt & braces.

    • @extectic
      @extectic Před rokem +2

      You'd think that, wouldn't you. Maybe we should ask *the Prusa technicians who built this unit* why they didn't carry out those checks, as they are definitely guys who *build printers* ...

    • @ChrizRockster
      @ChrizRockster Před rokem +1

      @@extectic Indeed, but I also think that buying a 3D printer should never come with the belief that you can just open a box and print. These are still mechanical devices with no real mind of their own, no functional safety and the "on demand" nature of the first world is expecting to much from this industry at hobby level. Managing expectations is important for the first generations of new products.

  • @tmilker

    • @VuLamDang
      @VuLamDang Před rokem

      I agree. Likely a heat creep due to fan failure. I think on the new board extruder fan disable is a thing so there might be bug with the slicer/gcode, since he was able to print another gcode just fine, but consistently failed the controller stand.

    • @UncleJessy
      @UncleJessy  Před rokem

      Yeah I think that is more than likely causing the jamming unless the fans are set to off for the first layer 🤷‍♂️

    • @tmilker
      @tmilker Před rokem +2

      That makes me think what's actually going on is his cooling fan and extruder fans are swapped. Since the dragons have less surface area, they'd get through that first layer faster but still with problems(as seen), after the first layer it turns on and finishes it fine. I don't know if Prusa extruder fans are hardwired or software controlled but I don't think extruder fans should be software controlled at all.

      I had to contact support for both of my prusa printers.
      The first time was for the kit of the SL1 (resinprinter): when Ive tried to screw in the little rubber feet the screw got stuck somehow. The thread was damaged. Dont know if it was the thread of the bottom plate or the screw, but I couldnt get it out anymore easily. So both threads where damaged.
      Support send me over replacementparts whcih arrived only a couple of days/ within a week.
      The second time was a problem with the mini (also self assembled).
      The selftest failed all the time at start up and blew a fuse out. Replaced mentioned parts on my own with help from the forum guys (mentioned thermistor).
      But still the fuse blew out.
      So Ive contacted the support, send them over pictures.
      I started looking at the online help and ended up on the picture for the fuses and noticed on my own (before the support guy answered) that the fuses where switched with each other.
      On the assembly kit these are pre-installed.
      In both cases the support was friendly, super helpful and fast in answering.
      Amazing!

    • @extectic
      @extectic Před rokem

      Yeah, this is the Prusa assembly technicians failing right here. I suppose you can't expect perfection, but belts wildly incorrectly tightened from the factory and a hotend fan that's not spinning, that's just pretty darn awful quality control for a $1000 unit.

  • @leinadreign3510
    @leinadreign3510 Před rokem

    Ha, ive ordered the mini kit.
    Was fun to assemble but it only spew an error out during the start up self test.
    Ive ordered new thermistors and nozzle heating element (error said there is a problem with that) and it still spew out the same error.
    Also a fuse was always blowing out (which I had to buy as well). Blew through 5 fuses.
    Contacted the support, send over pictures.
    And then I noticed something:
    While I was looking at the online help about the fuses:
    The picture was different!
    The fuses where exchanged with each other!
    Switched them to the same like in the picture and it worked!
    The fuses where pre-installed, so it wasnt an error of mine and it wasnt mentioned in the building manual of course. Obviously, since it wasnt mentioned, I havent taken a look at the placement of the fuses.
    But then it worked and still does!
    But that was a rocky start ^^

    Prusa states that an extra thermistor is installed in the heatbreak to prevent clogging caused by heat creeps. So, I'm wondering why this didn't prevent your printer from printing when it detected a higher temperature in the heatbreak due to the malfunctioning fan. Is it possible that this feature has not yet been implemented in the firmware (like input shaping)...?

    This is why I typically do the kits. Save some money and make sure it’s built perfectly. Nobody will care about the build quality more than you. Unless you happen to be a total contradiction and are “maker” that doesn’t like to build things and pay attention to details. Most ppl that 3d print are in to electronics anyway.

  • @scott3001

    @Uncle Jessy: Something bothered me on the beginning of your video, when we can see your printer printing the first layer: The cooling fan (blowing on the hotend, not the one blowing on the layer) should be turning! This is odd, this fan is supposed to start when the temperature of the nozzle exceeds 50°C... So I think that's the reason of your clogs (cause of heat-creap).
    Maybe the fan is not activated for the first layer because you tried to open a MK3 GCODE on Prusa Slicer that replaced some parameters?

      @soacker25 It's the leadscrew not being straight. Basically, it moves the whole bed/gantry (depending on the printer) in the way the leadscrew is bent, thus moving the hotend, which makes these marks. The only way to fix this is to use an oldham coupler or a flexible coupler on the leadscrew, OR you could go nuclear and swap from leadscrews to belts (basically, using belts to move the Z axis, like the Voron 2.4)
