  • For as much as I love Crash Team Racing, it wasn't the only 90s kart racer that influenced my obsession with this sub-genre of racing game.
So let's take a look at another culprit.

It has you playing as cartoon children with big heads and no arms and legs, and is a brutally hard game that requires mastery in order to fully beat all tournaments. It also has some of the best visuals you'll find in a PS1 game, and the soundtrack is solid. Mixed with great control, a great sense of speed, and fun level design, and you have a high quality kart racer that's fun to come back to.

The nostalgia I felt watching this. To this day whenever Rare comes up in conversations, especially the N64 era. I mention how much I loved this game against my family. Missiles weren't a downgrade for me, I loved swiftly punishing a specific cousin the instant he passed me. Every. Time.(At least try) Yet what does still drive me up a wall is when others assume I only liked Conker thanks to a later title. I was easily made hyper as a kid and such characters drew me in easily, at least high energy. That and looking back it seems I liked balanced racers the most in the kart games I played.

This game is absolutely incredible and would be a contender for my favorite kart racing game of all time if it weren't for the fact that it loses a bit of replay value upon being mastered. I recently competed with a friend of mine to race through the adventure mode and in-practicing for that race, I ended up mastering the mechanics and sadly don't have much reason to replay it unless I were to get into speedrunning (which I very well might).

I got Diddy Kong Racing when it was only a few months old; I was 10 and finished it at 11 (100 percenting the game took a long time, T.T. times were hard as hell for me). I remember the game pretty vividly for being so long ago, and the Frosty Village song made me smile from the nostalgia.
Wizpig 1 was absolutely insane. About as difficult as you can be without simply being impossible. I was stuck on him for months and my number of attempts probably reached the triple digits. I wasn't even excited when I finally beat him, I was dumbstruck. The reward was well worth it, though - I loved the "false ending" thing Rare was fond of during the N64 days like with Banjo-Kazooie.
T.T. was that good? Huh. I remember being completely disappointed with him since I found him so difficult to control; Pipsy and Tiptup were the only characters I ever used due to their tight controls. Since I was a dumb little 11 year old, though, I was probably wrong.
I'm still disappointed Donkey Kong Racing was never released. E3 2001 was the first one I ever followed and I thought the game looked cool.

I never managed to beat first Wizpig as a kid since I never figured out the secret boost technique, but that never hampered my enjoyment of the game. I somewhat recently finally played through all of adventure mode for the first time, and I actually found the second Wizpig race much harder than the first. I didn't think the first one was very hard at all, it only took me a few attempts, while the second took quite some time. The car is the easiest vehicle to handle, and all that race demands of you is to hit all the boosts, it's really not a hard track, so it doesn't take much time to get a good feel for it. While the second race, there a lot more to consider with the plane, elevation is now a factor, there's more room for error, especially since you'll actually have obstacles to avoid. Sure you can get powerups, but I think the first race not having them made it easier just because it made it simple. Just hit all the boosts and you're good.

with Diddy Kong Racing then Mario Kart 64.
Think about it both Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing have a story involving some alien. (Wizpig and Nitros Oxcide)
    - Both have a hub world.
    - Both have boss battles that involve racing including the final boss.
    - Both have lots of collectables.
    - Both having you need to collect something in order to reach the final boss.
    - Both got remakes. (Though calling Diddy Kong Racing DS a remake is a whee bit of a stretch.)

Diddy Kong Racing to me is one of the best Racers because of how they do things. Adventure Mode, the tier system for items, the only other game that does Diddy Kong Racing better especially with the vehicles? Is Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed. Literally just does the vehicle swap on the Fly.

After unlocking Future funland it always got to me that it didn't have a multi player battle or challenge stage because when you looked at the level select screen it looked like there was something there and I totally spent months looking for the key to unlock it!! : D
I wish they would make another one as it was ever so fun to play in adventure or together with friends! ^-^

Honestly, Unless you could truly dedicate a full video for it, You could put DKR DS in a video about bad remakes/remakes you really don't like, I think that would be a great vid coming from you

Ah yes the humble beginning of a certain bear who later teamed up with a Breegul to save his sister from am5 evil witch had many years, hibernated until there grand return for Super Smash Bros Ultimates, and Conker...well the least say the better unless you want to get the alternative universeceere Conker did return On form *hint hint* while Banjo and Kazooie didn't from a certain "remix"!

Every person says the Wizpig 1 fight is harder. That may be true in the original (idk never played), but in DS Wizpig 2 has those lasers that always hit you after you pass the giant head.

I will keep saying this until the end of time, I love Diddy Kong Racing and consider it my all-time favourite game.
Also I somehow never knew about that shortcut in Frosty Village until now
Also also, I would disagree about Wizpig being the hardest part. Wizpig is very hard, but by that point I already knew about the trick and was able to beat him after a few attempts.
Bubbler 2 and Smokey 2 however..........

I mean even Peach's Castle is sectioned off by the lobby, basement, and upstairs by beating each Bowser fight, which you enter by getting a certain amount of stars per Bowser stage

    • @BenjaMage
      @BenjaMage  Před 2 lety

True, but at the same time, CTR's hub world also has its various areas sectioned off by beating each boss, which you enter by getting a certain amount of trophies (and just like Mario 64, you get a key from said boss to unlock the next section).
So in a roundabout way, it still works.

Games nowadays are missing unique and creative game mechanics. They follow the same safe choices. There's a lot of cool mechanics that have been in games that have not been reutilized.

MAn I remember Diddy Kong Racing. It was one of the first games I got on the N64, and is still one of my favorite racing games to this day. The DS remake was ok but not as good as the original. I hope this game gets ported to the virtual consoles someday because I'd love to play it again.
