Vol 4 was the very first album I bought, in autumn of 1972. I wore the grooves off that album. Now over 50 years later hearing these different takes of cherished and iconic songs is a revelation.
It's the First Sabbath album I listened to when It came out. I was 14 and I saw them in concert in my hometown (Bologna, Italy) for that tour. Great Memories !!
It's like hearing this album again for the first time. "Wheels of Confusion" has to be the "sludgiest" metal tune. I fricken love this album...played it a thousand times.
Since, when I was 8 I have been loving Bill´s drumming.. did not understand a word of English but still watching Paris 1970 show. Sad that drugs and alcohol destroyed his physical health and stanima, plus I think on Vol 4. he shines the most
I think Ozzy's voice has held up quite well compared to his contemporaries, way better than Robert Plant and practically every other 70s vocalist still around. I saw him live countless times solo and with Sabbath from the first Ozzfest to the End Tour, he always sounded like Ozzy to me. I've heard way worse in some of the Randy Rhodes era bootlegs than he did 20+ years later when I saw him.

I just bought the 5 LP version of this and the "Paranoid" 5 LP version..Both are so awesome. One of the coolest things on this boxset are the alternate versions with Ozzy's other inprovised lyrics and the talking in between too. Of course the real album that comes with remastered on vinyl sound incredible too as always. The live double album on here is killer too. This little taste should influence you to buy it...This is incredible. This box set has a killer hardcover book and massive 4 foot poster too, so does the "Paranoid",super deluxe..
Alot of ppl don't understand that Ozzy made up random lyrics to sing in order to get his melody down. After that, he'd sing Geezer's lyrics. LOL to ppl complaining of shitty lyrics😊

I've always liked this kind of stuff because it sounds more natural and raw. When I was younger one of my friends got sent the demo version of Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American album and it was ridiculously good. The released album they did was waaaay over produced and kind of meh..

I played the Pop Giants Vol. 9 - Collection thousands of times during the 70's, and during the 80's: Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, Volume 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Wondeful!!!!!!!!! I bought all albums with Ozzy, Dio in vynil, then in CD. I have most of them in vynil and CD, and saw the band live with Ronnie James Dio on vocals in 1992. Great memories!!!

Bill Ward hated playing drums for Cornucopia. He had a hard time with the off beat and would mess up alot. Bill said he thought he was going to get canned because Tony and Geezer were getting pissed at him during the recording session.lol

Ozzy used to just sing whatever over the music to get the vocal melody down, then Geezer would write the lyrics that would end up on the final version. Ozzy's melodies were just as integral to Sabbath as Tony's riffs and I don't think he got enough credit for it.
I think what's going on here is Ozzy just blabs out whatever and it doesn't matter because he's just searching for a melody to go along with the song. After the melody is down someone (in this case Geezer) comes along and writes actual lyrics to fit the melody. When I was young some well respected person from the underground punk scene came and watch our band practice and told us about this and joked around about reading shampoo bottles or something funny like that to come up with a melody / rhythm. After we were done I was jamming out some sabbath by myself and one of the guys in our band told me to stop (thinking I would offend the guy) so I stopped .. and the punk dude told me to keep going cause he was also a huge sabbath fan. Being young was cool, now I'm just old and worthless. Go me!!
Wow, this mix actually sounds better than the original album. If there is one thing I hold against Sabbath, is that the production and mixing was really poor. On the original Vol 4 there's a noticeable difference to Snowblind compared to the rest of the album, it sounds way better. Snowblind is almsot the only song you can actually hear what Bill Ward is playing.
Absolutely agree. Under The Sun wouldve sounded much better if it was mixed like Into The Void. The mids is completely scooped out, and you can barely hear the kick drum. Drums are super thin.
now that you mention it, I do hear the loss of detail when I go back. Someone else here mentioned scooping; makes sense to me. However, that is the sound of the record, my joy in hearing more of the kit and and the depth and space of the ensemble notwithstanding. Do I wish they had issued the original with the same production values as this? Yes. Would I cease to listen to the original mix if they remixed it next week? Hard to say; probably not.

After we were done I was jamming out some sabbath by myself and one of the guys in our band told me to stop (thinking I would offend the guy) so I stopped .. and the punk dude told me to keep going cause he was also a huge sabbath fan.

Wow, this mix actually sounds better than the original album. If there is one thing I hold against Sabbath, is that the production and mixing was really poor. On the original Vol 4 there's a noticeable difference to Snowblind compared to the rest of the album, it sounds way better. Snowblind is almsot the only song you can actually hear what Bill Ward is playing.

Absolutely agree. Under The Sun wouldve sounded much better if it was mixed like Into The Void. The mids is completely scooped out, and you can barely hear the kick drum. Drums are super thin.
And the guitar is much more gnarly here
To me Supernaut is their best on Vol4
now that you mention it, I do hear the loss of detail when I go back. Someone else here mentioned scooping; makes sense to me. However, that is the sound of the record, my joy in hearing more of the kit and and the depth and space of the ensemble notwithstanding. Do I wish they had issued the original with the same production values as this? Yes. Would I cease to listen to the original mix if they remixed it next week? Hard to say; probably not.
