  • WW2 Italy Feb 1943 DUKW Boats in action. Soldiers often called them "Ducks," and this six-wheeled vehicle was instantly recognizable:
Olive Drab: Like most Allied vehicles, the DUKW was painted a dull olive green for camouflage.
Large and in Charge: At over 31 feet long and 8 feet wide, it was hard to miss.
Open Top: Most DUKWs had a canvas top stretched over the cargo area for basic protection from the elements, but many operated without it in the Italian heat.
Wheels and a Propeller: The most distinctive feature was the propeller and rudder mounted at the rear, allowing it to navigate water after driving off the shore.

    DUKW: Built for a Purpose:
These weren't just odd-looking trucks; they served a vital role in Italy:
Supply Lines Across Rivers: Italy's many rivers were major obstacles. DUKWs could ferry ammunition, supplies, and even artillery across waterways, speeding up the Allied advance.
Beach Landings: While not as common as in the Pacific Theater, DUKWs were sometimes used to bring supplies ashore directly from ships during amphibious landings.
Evacuation of Wounded: Their spaciousness made them suitable for transporting casualties from battlefields to medical aid stations, often quicker than traditional ambulances.
DUKWs in Action - A Sight to Behold:
Picture this: a DUKW, loaded with supplies, plunging into the turbulent waters of the Volturno River. The propeller churns, churning white water, as the vehicle bravely fights the current to reach the opposite bank and deliver its vital cargo to waiting troops.
The DUKW in 1944 Italy was a symbol of Allied ingenuity and determination, a vehicle equally at home on land and water, playing a crucial role in the liberation of Italy.
