One of the greatest singers ever. Gone too young. Her work on the Disney movie Prince of Egypt outclasses Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston’s duet in the Hollywood theme song created for the movie.
mariah and whitney's duet was so out of touch with the actual movie.. i hate how pop singers take those songs and turn them into a genre that they do not belong.. ofra slayed them all day long.

@@florentinotoni1814 I think they did that on purpose. They wanted something that wasn't as traditional and theatrical and a lot of animated movies had a pop rendition of the songs at the end.

Interesting you noted the blend of ancient and new. This song is a 17th-Century Jewish-Yemenite prayer that Ofra recorded a relatively traditional version of in 1984. It was sampled in a hit remix of a rap song around the same time Ofra’s traditional music was gaining traction overseas, so she released a pop version of this song with some new English lyrics that was a huge hit in the late 80’s. Most fascinating, though, was that during her live concerts, instead of reproducing the synthesized 80’s pop sound of the hit versions of her songs, she transformed her songs into more organic jazzy arrangements, like the one you heard in this video.
Also, in regards to you asking if that was a “battered bin” - because the Yemenite Jews didn’t have any actual instruments to perform their songs in the desert, they used tin cans as percussive accompaniment. So the tin tray was a way of including that part of the song’s history.

Ofra was an Israeli, but she brought this music from her Yemeni heritage (also the outfits), and blended all that into a modern music form. The words are part Arabic and part Hebrew as well.

This song was a big hit in 1988! Eric B & Rakim and Madonna sampled this song. Speaking of Madonna, I know they call Ofra the 'Israeli Madonna' but I think it's a shame because Madonna doesn't have a chance against Ofra vocally. She is a great entertainer for sure, but Ofra is beyond this world.

@@lovisaleroy8417 It's sad to be honest with you. I know she was being nice to Madonna because she knew Madonna fans would come at her like they usually do whenever someone points out the flaws in Madonna's voice.
I noticed that she wasn’t even listening to her vocals for most of the video. She was making fun of her body language, the way that she would squat up and down with her knees and stuff. Which is ridiculous, because she had no idea what the lady is singing about, she could be just physically interpreting the lyrics there. I just think if she doesn’t understand this kind of music, she shouldn’t be judging. But then again, if you understand vocal technique, why do you have to understand the music itself anyway to judge the talent? Georgina disappoints.

Her voice gives me chills and tightens my throat and makes my eyes burn. I think she is singing here a Yemenite song which I believe they used to sing out in the desert-like wilderness. Probably got some good echo and they knew how to project their voice out there. This is a traditional song but she added some very modern arrangements. Of course she relies on some voice enhancement in some parts (a voice box? ). Still her voice was divine. 😊
Im Nin'Alu is a poem set to music by Shalom Shabbazi, a 17th century Yemenite rabbi, mystic and poet.
Ofra Haza (1953-2000) was born in Israel to a Jewish family originated in Yemen. Sha started singing in public as a teenager, without any official music lessons. She sang in Hebrew, but also borrowed from the Yemenite culture, and sang on international stages a varied music with great success. She had an incredible voice ! Extremely talented.

I recommend a Spanish singer, her name is Diana with the song "sola" in Salamanca. She is a very versatile singer who sings different musical styles. Mixing in this song I recommend you arabic influences with pop with some incredible melismas I think you will like it. Greetings from Spain

As a teen, Ofra Haza sang that song on a traditional quire. As a young professional singer she was a backup singer on Yigal Bashan's recording of the song. Later she recorded it hersef and it went on to become one of her greatest hits and her signature song. Also, a crowd pleaser. So, yes, she's been singing it for decades...

Im Nin'Alu - (Im = If. Ninaalu = were shut closed - have a deeply religious and social meaning. Back when Jews were languishing in under the Islamic yoke in Yamen - they used to say if the doors of the generous are locked the doors of god are always open.
The lyrics are basically a prayer written by Rabbi Shalom Shabazi in the 18th century! :

I love songs by Ofra Haza, I wonder if she didn't die, how successful she would be and if Madonna would be just as successful in the charts, but I don't think Ofra was and I think Madonna is from Yemen even after her death.
