I hadn't heard of the backlash against podcasters who start designing, but I say don't let that deter you. If you want to design, you do it. I am a small name designer and I am not comfortable enough to start a podcast, so I have a small following, in the age of social media, it can be hard. You be you.

    • @Stettafire
      @Stettafire Před rokem +1

I do wince a bit at newbie designers who make statements like "a pattern isn't standard it's just a guide" or "I don't need to give gague, just do whatever" or "These pattern measurements are post blocking not preblocking" or "I wrote long paragraphs explaining each stitch inside the pattern explaining each stitch and I refuse to use any standard form of notation cus you have to read my wall of text just to get a simple k2b and that's not annoying at all"
However, that is not me saying "podcasters shouldn't be designers" rather that good designers should pay attention to pattern standardisation and what already exists in the wild. Everyone has to start somewhere. I won't gonna moan about podcasters becoming designers. I do moan about bad patterns though

Wow, so many good sweaters! I'm not sure what you mean about undercurrent of cruelty, but if you have a design idea and people like it, they'll buy it and make it. You already put yourself out there by making these videos so you must already be resilient:) Have a happy 2023 of knitting! Oh also Megan Nodecker (Pip & Pin) has an online course for designers if you're down with that kind of thing, she likes to support and mentor new designers. You can check out her podcast if you want to see her style, she seems pretty nice & chill.

Jonathan, So enjoyed seeing what you had knit in 2022. Would like to comment, out of all, I thought the Anker sweater ,both in color and fit was so attractive on you. Everything else was wonderful as well but the Anker really stands out.

Oh my goodness this has been so good re visiting your knits. Doesn’t seem five minutes since we saw these on your needles. It is so heartwarming when someone loves your gift knitting - no matter what the knit is or who it is for. It makes the gift knitting so worth while. My 18 year old grandson is thrilled with the fingerless mitts he found in his stocking ( because he kept wearing mine). Great viewing - thanks so much 🧶🧶

Happy New Year! Thank you for sharing all your 2022 knits! I hadn’t heard abound the negativity of podcasters designing. It’s so sad that some have to be so negative in a place where there is plenty of room for everyone. Don’t let it discourage you. Love your podcast ☺️

Wow what a lot of lovely things you’ve knitted over the year. So sad to hear that you are deciding not to move forward on your own design. I would do it anyway and ignore any negativity which always says more about the other person that you. Lovely ideas and inspiration so looking forward to your projects for 2023. I live vicariously through you as I can’t really justify the cost of the luxury yarns you use but they look beautiful and will be an heirloom to treasure.

    Hi Jonathan,
Good to see you and all your beautiful knits, you always give me so much inspiration.
Don't let unkind people keep the people who are your friends and would love to knit your beautiful sweater pattern from that privilege. I don't know what having a podcast and designing patterns have to do with each other. Ask Andrea Mowry, she does it.
    Take care

I am new to your channel and I find your work to be just beautiful. As an off and on knitter over the decades I feel quite intimidated by the complexity of your knits - I’m basically a knit in pieces, from bottom up, which is how I was taught. I only recently took the leap into circular needles! But I love the relaxing activity of knitting so I am going to try to be more adventurous. So you are an inspiration.
What is this nonsense about anyone criticizing you for making your own designs? No words! I would have thought that the knitting community would be the last place for this. 🤷🏻‍♀️

With each of the pullovers you showed us, I was saying "Ooh! I think that's my favorite!!" I especially like the Gr8 Gingham and your Baisti. I don't quite understand why a creative community would make cruel comments toward another creator, but if you ever want a tester, please let me know (although I'm not the fastest knitter). I'm currently working on a Vanilla Heirloom that I modified to include some graphic color work at the cuffs and torso. As always, I look forward to your next episode!!

The mesh sweater reminds me of an old Designing Women episode where Mary Jo and Charlene go on a double date with a couple of plumbers. Mary Jo’s date wears mesh t shirt or sweater, not sure , but any way he was a very hairy guy and it stuck out the holes of the mesh.
However, I like how you are wearing it. Very stylish and a little daring.

Your self designed sweater is gorgeous and I get your apprehension over launching as a pattern for all look and make there is such a negative culture around and I think it stinks..but it would be great to have a video about your process so more people feel confident trying designing . Myself I am only confident enough to size up, change the weight of the yarn and adjust certain aspects such as sleeve and body length another person perspective on designing would be great

It's so unfortunate to here of online cruelty in the knitting community. Whether you design one pattern or many, they should be applauded and welcomed! Please don't let this prevent you from exploring your creativity!

I've also experienced the "undercurrent of cruelty" in the community. I'm not a podcaster, but I am a nobody. When I uploaded my first design to Ravelry it immediately got a LOT of attention, it was put on the front page, and it really made my day. The next day it was taken down because apparently my designer name was not "believable" enough. This rule was mentioned nowhere in their uploading process. I had used... my name, with the first initial of my surname. About as close as I could get to my legal name without potentially endangering myself.
I inquired about my design being taken down and was told that I simply needed to change my designer name to be more "believable." I asked about whether they had any guidelines or documentation regarding what constitutes a "believable" designer name, and was told they don't have any. I asked about whether I was required to use my *full* legal name and was told that many designers use brand names or pen names, and this was acceptable. I simply needed to choose something "believable." I asked them for examples of what might be considered "believable" and "not believable" names so I could figure out what they meant. They did not supply these. If I wanted to choose a "believable" name I would have to just keep guessing over and over until I found something they liked, I guess. I still have absolutely zero idea what they mean by having a "believable" name. My best guess is that someone in the moderation team got upset that a new designer got so much attention, and decided to remove me. The rest of the moderators circled around that decision and stonewalled my attempts to get it back up.
My design is still removed, and I'm effectively banned from uploading any designs without ever having broken a single rule. Bravo I guess, knitting community. I still knit, and I still use Ravelry to purchase designs since it's the best database around, but I don't use it enthusiastically, and don't use it to track my projects or my stash anymore. I interact with it as little as possible these days.

I've stopped using ravelry because I find ravelry toxic

@@Stettafire My understanding is that the main alternatives were created by conservatives so they had a "safe space" to be racist?

When you say that you knit a little extra length on your socks that felt. What do you mean? Like instead of having negative ease do you knit it to foot length instead?

I’m 1 sock in to the pair and I’ve made the decision to use smaller needles for the comparison as the first is just a bit too big. Either way I’ll have 2 pairs of socks 🤣All such a game of trial and error this knitting malarky!
