    How to widen access, listen up 10 downing Street :
    1) build more hospital where needed, the hospital now where designed for the population of the last century, health care can not keep up with the increasing population, this is one way to reduce the inflation rate as your making more jobs because you are building infrastructure(hospitals, fast rail , nuclear power plants , geothermal energy) which will pump money back into the system, economics 101 (but clearly you dont know that ). This was on way which the USA came out of the great depression.
    2) new hospital will open up more job and specialisty post (e.g surgery, cardio nuro)
    3) open more medical schools
    4) easy off the requirements for the entry

  • @zahrasyed4532
    @zahrasyed4532 Před rokem +22

    Yeah it really isn’t widening access if the entry requirements are still the same as traditional routes. If they still expect high ucat scores for example, I do not see how they are trying to give everyone who is capable of being a doctor, a chance 😔

    • @xavier4260
      @xavier4260 Před rokem +8

      Trust me I have been through it , they just want to filter out as many people as possible because there is not enough space at medical schools. The only part of the UCAT that links to the career is the SJT section that's it, as a doctor you won't be expected to read a 2 page sheet in 30 seconds lol 😆

    This scheme is terrible and doesn't widen access. It restricts access to a small pool of people who go with great levels of funding. The best way would be to improve funding for all students in medicine so they can graduate. This will stop current students from dropping out due to inadequate funding via the NHS bursary. Also, this scheme will take the same amount of time as the standard degree yet the apprentices need to work as well? It is impossible for the apprentices to do the same level of academic work med students do if they need to work and if they are paid merely for placements, why aren't all current med students paid for placements?
    The BMA consultants committee completely rejected this proposal. Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Optometrist apprenticeships were rejected so why was this approved? It is so stupid. Just improve funding for students and expand places. Give guaranteed interviews to WP students. There are so many better solutions. HEE are incompetent.

    I’ve contacted both hospitals and universities about this. It seems the hospitals are willing and up for it, but the universities aren’t.

      @@Ggg_-wq3rb I’ve emailed the local trusts in my area (not telling you where I live, but it’s near some major hospitals) and the universities which potentially would have partnered with them. All the trusts said that they wanted to role out the apprenticeship but were looking for a partner university. The universities said they had no plans to offer the apprenticeship. Maybe some universities have agreed to it, but I’ve not found one yet. Have you?

    I think this is a way to ensure that all GMC licensed medical practitioners stay in the NHS after qualification. Right now, medical graduates who have been educated at a British university can get their license recognised in various European countries and beyond relatively easily. However, without the MBBS stamp of approval, I suspect that the doctors that qualify via the apprenticeship route will be unable to go work abroad as a doctor as their undergraduate training is unlikely to be recognised.

    • @sassymedea3065
      @sassymedea3065 Před rokem +6

      Apprentices get the same exit qualification as those who went through the tadiational route. So this to me is just fearmongering.

    • @were455
      @were455 Před rokem +5

      @@sassymedea3065 Only time will tell, but I am not sure this qualification will have any cross border recognition. It will be good enough to allow someone to register with the GMC, sit the post-graduate exams and become a consultant in the UK. However, I am not sure that the medical boards of other countries will accept it. For example, in order for an international medical graduate to work in America, they have to qualify from a medical school that is recognised by the World Federation of Medical Education (a US body) in order to sit the US medical licensing exams. Similarly, if a doctor with a UK MBBS degree wishes to become licensed in Switzerland, a current UK MBBS degree is sufficient, (though Brexit will make this process more complex from 1st Jan 2025 onwards). I am not sure that the same privilege will apply to people who train via this route. I could be wrong, though only time will tell. I suspect this is a ploy by the UK government to force a new generation of doctors to stay in the UK.

      They already have apprenticeship for nursing. I think it’s mostly internally advertised so you would need to work in the nhs already. First you would need to do a nursing asssocate apprenticeship and top that up with another apprenticeship.
