    That Brit comedy - so in evidence here - is just one of my all time favourite forms of entertainment. I was going to say 'genre'. Is it a 'style'? Nah, it's just built-in! It's inherent in so much of their comedy/entertainment output right? And you'll find it often anywhere in the UK, amongst any regular class of people there. There's this balance of straight-faced delivery, a little sly smirk, camp, crazy, whimsical and outright nonsense, gibberish, childishness and fun (sorry got thinking of Monty Python a little there). Thanks for this review!

      Thanks! I think there is something about "Brit comedy" that allows you to join this "club" that acknowledges you have a certain world view and that you "get it" - even if it is somewhat uncomfortable.

    So glad I stumbled upon this. Great job reviewing... I've now watched your reviews of several movies from the 60s. I loved your lighthearted upbeat tone, the fun facts and interconnectedness with other movies, and your incisive observations about the actors, genres, period mores, etc. I'm astonished that you have (with my vote) only 17 likes.... your work deserves much higher recognition!

      That's very kind. And yes, viewership and the algorithms remain a mystery to me. A year ago I had several videos get 20-30,000 views - but this year while my tech and editing skills have improved, the views and new subscribers are way, way down. Seriously, getting this kind of supportive feedback really helps (I never intended to monetize this niche topic) so I will do more but perhaps at a slower pace. Thanks again.

      @@Vlad65WFPReviews Aloha Walt, I appreciated your reply and I'm happy that my comments encouraged you. Your sharing of the historical context is unique, essential, and mostly lacking elsewhere. I am grateful for it. Perspective is sorely needed today. Perhaps it's the post-covid rush to get out and do all that we couldn't (instead of movie binging) that has caused fewer views of your channel. I'm confident it'll pick up again because you are uniquely well-balanced.
      As with novels (and everything else, perhaps), in this era of "cancel culture", it's important & refreshing to see art put in historical perspective. I am literally sick and tired of the vainglorious, self-righteous, sanctimony of reviewers who want to cancel (old) movies, books (Dr. Seuss), even cartoons (like Yosemite Sam) because some aspect offends the sensibilities of Today (quite literally "today," given that tomorrow's new political correctness may render yesterday's censuring critic the recipient of a scarlet letter).
      How are we to know how far we've come if we're pilloried and castigated for where we've been? How are we to understand the oppression of the heart and even cumulative generational plight of others unlike ourselves if we don't have the opportunity to see all the varied demeaning slights to which they were subjected - in the many subtle ways that only good actors & filmmakers can demonstrate (perhaps most movingly of all) without words but with expressions, body language, and other subtleties?
      Anyhow, I wax too long. As poets often confess to fans, what moved me may be a perspective that you (the writer) never consciously or even unconsciously embraced... But it's what was to me most distinctive - the plainspoken non-judgmental historical contextualness of your reviews. It's so important to tempering the patronizing of a new generation who's sense of history may go no deeper than a decade.
      Lol... this is way too long! Sorry. Your noble style struck a deep cord!

    I finally, finally found out who the heck was always ticketing my car. I know 100% that I put enough money in the meter, but when I got back. . . there it was tucked underneath the windshield wiper blade. It got to a point that I stopped using my car and switched to Public Transit. I didn't save any money, but I would rather pay my money to the Transit Company instead of the Devil.

      Yes, it was a tremendously educational film in that way, explaining why things are the way they are in the world.

    a great review of one of the greatest comedies of all time- I really enjoyed this review as it appreciates the genius of this era reflected in this review.
    We now look back on 1967 as perhaps one of our last golden ages when the Baby boom really flowered into Such masterworks as Sgt Pepper and this movie. Thanks for reviewing- Now Im inspired to see it again.
    Clearly- in this cancel Fake Woke guilty tripping culture- this great movie could not be made today. Thanks so much!

      Really glad you enjoyed the review. What should be offensive or not is an increasingly tricky thing but I'll say in the rush to demonstrate how "aware" some people are, they fail to understand the concept of "satire". I'd call it a "New Puritanism" (hey, I like that term!) I wonder if we will ever have a "New Restoration".

      @@Vlad65WFPReviews Yes I suppose things go in cycles . Satire and Black humor are two of the better ways of handling difficult times. Ive heard it said that its harder to laugh today because things just dont seem to have improved . It may be the case that we are de evolving into a new Dark age- if we survive at all.

      Thanks. Looking at it, while Rom-Coms never go away, there is a general reluctance to look at sex - which is kind of a mixed blessing. No more embarrassing sequences with the knees and shoulders of body doubles like we used to get in earlier decades.

    It's great to find someone else who has reviewed this! Great film! Have you seen much of Pete and Dud's other work?

    • @Vlad65WFPReviews
      @Vlad65WFPReviews  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, not a lot - and we had several audio recordings too. Personally, I found some of the records to veer between being witty and simply crude for shock humour. Loved solo Pete too, such as in Black Adder 1.

    I've never seen this one, but the blu ray is $63, and I don't do streaming. Oh well, I'm signed up with VideoETA to remind me when it's reissued. BTW, I think Diabolique is the best Hitchcock film not made by Hitch.

    • @Vlad65WFPReviews
      @Vlad65WFPReviews  Před 2 lety

      It is listed on Roku, but I don't know about this universe of new streaming options. It is in the TCM stable so hopefully they will show it soon. If you live near a city with a decent library, try their dvd collection. I saw my review version using a library dvd. All the best.
      Yes, Diabolique is a superb Psycho-style Hitchcock - but the innocent hero/heroine suddenly in trouble trope used in Charade is very very Hitch - it was his trademark story engine. Thanks for watching.
