In this song Boy George was referencing equality, taking a page from the Rastafarians and their ““mantra”. The red is for the blood of all living things in the world. The gold is for all of the treasures in the world that people cherish. The green is for the earth that people walk on. George was looking for acceptance and equality, in his personal and professional life.

This is true. Boy George said this was about the drummer of the band John I think his name is... anyway, they had a whole secret affair cause BG was sorta kind of out or at least not overtly heterosexual in the 80s/not seen as straight and John didn't want to be roped into that image. I think BG may have said John didn't think their relationship was "gay" or something like that....basically Boy George wrote this and other songs and lyrics about his extremely closeted boyfriend at the time.

I loved the 80's because, it was like I could be a chameleon. One day I could look like Vince Neil, then Blondie, a cowgirl, a break dancer, a punk, anything I wished. It was a blast. I could even talk Valley girl sometimes to crack people up. Put on those leggings, poof my hair, throw on pumps and be a Valley girl for the day. This takes me down memory lane that's for sure.

Boy George and Culture Club blew up in around 1982
I was 8, and it changed my life.
You understood the point of the lyrics..exactly.
He just wanted to enjoy life being himself and free from judgments and oppression.
Being a shy and isolated child, I could not express my emotions.
This man meant everything to me.
Most of his wording is metaphorical/ emotional/ spiritual.
His gifted vocals and emotionally deep lyrical talents.. were the entire point.
George saw the world through a uniquely emotional lens.

So I was a psychiatric nurse, which above medicine and psychology occasionally demands more physical restraint of some folks. (26 years, never ever hurt a patient, and only got dinged once myself.) Anyhow, we based it on a course called Management of Assaultive Behavior. (Every cop should take this course - and pass.) One big class I taught had about a dozen new emplyees. What I didn't know was one was ex-UCLA women's basketball guard, another taught martial arts in his spare time, one was 6' 10" and a bit clumsy, and one li'l ol' gal was 4' 10", stretching. To pass the class, each one had to pin me to the floor - without damage! Every one passed, even the wee girl I had my doubts about. It's all a skill set, you see. Now, why am I telling this story? The day that wee girl (who became good friends with me for decades) was able to restrain me, she was dressed just precisely exactly like Boy George. It was one of her favorite looks. And, let me say, she carried it off far better that Boy George!

Karma, what you put out in the world you get in return! Boy George was perfect for the 80's. Talented singer/writer, flamboyant & didn't care what people thought/no boundaries!

I saw them LIVE...1985... The first time I heard them was on MTV...our CZcams, lol... I didn't know if he was a guy, or girl...because the groups name came and went so fast, no replay, no GOOGLE, so I had to wait to see it again, and then I saw Boy George and Culture Club...He has a Beautiful voice! He has loads of great songs...I was smitten by him even if he is Gay...i still love him. What is the meaning behind 'Karma Chameleon'?
Boy George once explained about the song: "The song is about the terrible fear of alienation that people have, the fear of standing up for one thing.
"It's about trying to suck up to everybody. Basically, if you aren't true, if you don't act like you feel, then you get Karma-justice, that's nature's way of paying you back."
Boy George wrote most of the band's lyrics, and many of his words were inspired by his relationship with the group's drummer, Jon Moss.
Their difficult romantic/professional relationship was also the inspiration for the line: "You're my lover, not my rival" in 'Karma Chameleon'.

When I was a teenager, this song was a current hit, but we didn't have a satellite dish and therefore no MTV so we didn't see the video nor see the sing title printed correctly. My mom and I both loved the song and we mis-heard the lyrics as "Come-a come-a come-a to me Leah" We just didn't hear it correctly. The name Leah was meaningful to us due to a prior family friend we had named pets after.

Boy George is a fantastic singer. He hit his peak of stardom with this song and a few more when I was in high school. He was very flamboyant and a little controversial at the time. He had a terrible drug problem for a lot of years. In interviews he described just how horrible those days of drug use were. He came close to death a couple of times by overdosing. Many of his friends ended up dying because of their addictions. Eventually he sought professional help and became drug free. He said that if it wasn't for making that decision he would have definitely died.
