      its to disperse heat from the ram

    • @DocDuko
      @DocDuko Před rokem +14

      the fin like structure is used to direct airflow. A harmonica shares this features to pass air past the parts that then vibrate and produce a certain tune. In the case of the ram, it helps direct airflow past aluminum to help disperse heat. You disperse this heat to run the hardware at higher mhz for better performance, but the extra electricity can add additional wear to the hardware, shortening it's life. Thus we put these metal fins on it, with thermal pads (the sticky part that requires heat to remove) to help reduce the load of heat on the part, helping it to last longer.

      Basic ram would explode trying to run a 3600mhz profile. A set of chips running 2133mhz doesn't make nearly as much heat as a chip clocked up to 3600+. Those heat spreaders are pretty important IMO. They won't improve performance by anything more than a negligible amount, but they will allow the RAM module to be at a more even temperature (versus hot on one end and cold on the other end) and any airflow will help remove some of the heat. In either case, you get an increase in longevity and reliability.

    • @ec7005
      @ec7005 Před rokem

      The bare stick probably runs at 2133mhz. The heat spreader stick is probably rated for 3600mhz+. It makes way more heat because running in XMP profiles is literally overclocking but easier. That heat spreader is absolutely essential to keep those chips from melting if they're running at the speed intended.
      Edit: I just saw that stick is pretty old and I believe is ddr3 so it's only like 2400mhz, but the point still stands that it's running well beyond what it otherwise could.

    • @ec7005

      They aren't ripping you off. It's a lot more expensive to produce memory that can run at 3600mhz on an XMP profile without breaking than making memory that can handle a baby 2133mhz its entire life. You need better materials and heat management and better resilience to handle much tighter timing without errors. dram chips look like dram chips, but 3600mhz dram chips make an awful lot more heat. It's literally ram that is going to be running heavily overclocked its entire life compared to actual standards. That's what XMP is for.

  • @arielr9614

    Yeah. Insides are vastly different. The two PCB's are on completely different levels of manufacturing and performance. The black PCB is designed to wiv heat away as fast as possible and prevent as much inter circuit cross-talk as possible, thus needing more layers to the PCB and vastly more ground planes, even shielding layers.

    For reference also, the safer method to remove these heatsinks is to submerge them in white spirit/turpentine for 6-12 hours
