I didn’t have an eating disorder growing up, but I was always skinny and teased unmercifully throughout my school years. My dad always laughed at me and told me I was ugly and told other people I probably had worms. An awful way to grow up.
My parents never joined in the ridicule but I had so many people tease me about being "a stick" and even had people try to make me eat more food at parties etc because I "needed some meat on my bones"
Now I'm overweight because I spent over 30 years eating with the goal try and gain weight and now I'm struggling to change those habits.
My best friend in HS had anorexia and I seriously think seeing her struggles and trying to help her is the only reason I didn't end up with an actual eating disorder to try and gain weight.
I've been on both sides and people are cruel on both sides. No girl's/woman's body is ever considered good enough by the general public and it has to stop. #iknowvictoriassecret

With Karen Carpenter it was even worse, she read one bad review of herself. And she took it and ran with it, all of because one person said, something bad about her. Truly sad.😢😢😢

Yes! Karen Carpenter had an awesome voice and was beautiful. She just couldn't see it. So sad that she suffered so much and then died young. I pray that Emmy sees just how gorgeous and talented she is. And I pray for others suffering to get well too.

emmy, this song means the world to me. when i first saw you on american idol a few months ago, i heard this song and knew right away that you were my favorite. the lyrics really get the struggle that i’ve been facing as a young teen who hates her body and has struggled with anorexia for the past year and a half. i’ve been trying to recover and the end of the song gives me strength to stand up to the voice in the back of my head telling me i’m too “fat” to be pretty. i know God made me the way i’m supposed to be, and your videos have been helping me remember that. not only are you so beautiful, but you’ve helped me so much. never listen to the haters and remember a 14 year old girl in New York has heard this song and used it to heal. thank you, i love you and am voting for you to win idol!

Bulimic and so relate to this song. I heard the same thing "You're so pretty.... if only" or "You could be anything..... if only". "Losing weight" should only have a bearing in health, NOT beauty, NOT intelligence, NOT aspirations. Parents, NEVER make your children feel "less than" by comments like this. Your daughters should hear "You're beautiful." PERIOD. NO QUALIFIERS! And "You can be anything!" PERIOD. NO QUALIFIERS, No "if onlys". I'm 59 years old and those "if onlys" from my childhood still hurt. Was put on my 1st diet at 11 yrs old....6' tall, 30 lbs overweight (Dr. supervised, 500 cal per day). I've yo-yo'd my ENTIRE life. Life has revolved around food, "do you need that", "don't eat that". 1st memories of 1st grade is a classmate telling me "You're fat". The teacher then, with good intentions, brings me to the front of the class and explains "why we don't tease classmates." Humiliating. I was only 6 and I STILL feel nauseous about that day 53 years later. Emmy, if this is written from your own personal experience, I'm so sorry you were made to feel "less".

As someone with anorexia..I didn’t want to be skinny..I want to disappear or be invisible and not impact anyone because I felt undeserving and unworthy. Being skinny on the outside was just the physical repercussion of not feeling I deserved even food or had the right to have needs

Yes, me too. I’ve struggled with so much trauma, and anorexia was the way for me to numb that all out, to escape all these feelings of shame, unworthiness, pain, and self blame. Being “skinny” was never the thing that kept this disease going, it’s all the pain underneath that I had no idea how to face.
