  • Madrid, is the capital and most populated city in Spain, which has been experiencing ever increasing heatwaves, and is having to rapidly adapt to these climate pressures. Since cities around the world consume two-thirds of the global energy supply and generate three-quarters of the world's greenhouse emissions, its essential that cities are actively upgrading their infrastructure to become more green. Madrid has become a leader in green infrastructure ranking 6th in the European Union. This is a major achievement considering Madrid is the second-largest city in the European Union with 3.4 million inhabitants and up to 6.7 million people within its metropolitan area.
Interestingly Madrid lies almost exactly at the geographical heart of the Iberian Peninsula, its a strategic location for the political and financial center of the country because it considered somewhat neutral, since Spain is made of 17 Autonomous regions, each having different cultural practices and even languages. Cities across Spain are well connected to Madrid through an extensive network of bullet trains called AVE, with 3,100km of track which is the longest high-speed rail network in Europe, connecting the most populated cities around the country to Madrid.
Its Madrid's accessibility and high-tech infrastructure juxtaposed with its historical buildings which make it an attractive destination for tourists. Before 2020 a whopping 7.6 million people visited Madrid each year, since 2020 numbers have dropped significantly at approximately 2.2 million. Many Tourists like to visit Spain for the warm climate but Madrid's climate is fairly extreme from cold, crisp and windy winters to very hot dry summers, this is because the city sits at an elevation of some (646 metres) or 2,120 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest capitals in Europe.
The summer months of July and August are extremely oppressive and this year was no except, with the highest officicial recorded temperature taken at 40.7c on the 14th July 2022 but in some cases it can feel like 45c due to the urban heat island effect from the concrete and tarmac radiating the suns heat.
Over the last decades Madrid has been turning this around by pouring its resources into green infrastructure to become better climate adapted. In this video we will show you how Madrid removed a highway to install its most ambitious green project called the Madrid Rio which encompasses 47 different projects with a total cost of 280 million euros improving the lives for millions of people, by planting well over 9,000 trees, creating 30km of cycle paths and multiple recreational spaces.

Something you might like, it´s what happened to river Turia in Valencia, Spain (3rd biggest city in the country).
There was a huge flooding several decades ago, which caused extraordinary damage. As a result, Valencians moved the natural riverbank to the outskirts, to prevent any more damage. And with the empty, "natural" riverbank, they created a huge park (roughly 2.5 times the length of Central Park, NY), that basically allows you walk from the northernost parts of the city, to the sea, barely touching asphalt.
One of the "hidden" gems of Spain, that many foreigners don´t know about. IMO...
    Best!

There are alot of buried buildings, lots of shopping malls have basements, there are train tunnels and car tunnels all over the world, why would you think this one is going to become a major death scene? Spain does have strict building regulations aswell, and the earthquakes that are measured in spain are mostly very light at the moment on active in the south of Spain.

If there are other areas where people can enjoy a more natural river then all is good. Every 30 years or so LA will get 3 or 4 times normal rain and it all runs off to the ocean.

Walter Jehne proposes creating frequent, very localized rainwater harvesting earthworks to support regreening. These could be made with onsite materials. The regreening needs to include trees to assist in soil rebuilding as that is what will correct more problems with Madrid's environmental degradation. Mark Shepard's techniques of adapting farming methods to mimic local biomes would be a clever strategy that increases food/livestock feed production while restoring soil, and habitat for wildlife.

Local government basically called the population stupid by denying the existence of "la boina ".Unfortunately, there has been a certain return to that situation with the increasing traffic and insufficient public transport which doesnt encourage people to use it in spite of the reduction by half in cost of the monthly transport pass

Bicycles, ebikes, electric cargo bicycles, robo taxis and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel.
Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing SAFE, PROTECTED BIKE LANES and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school, ride for health or ride for fun. Children should be able to ride a bicycle to school without having to dodge cars and trucks. Separated and protected bike lanes are required. It will also make the roads safer for automobile drivers. Transportation planners and elected officials need to encourage people to walk, bike and take public transportation. Healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. In the future cities will be redesigned for people not cars. Crazy big parking lots will be transformed.

More rail is crucial to the 'last mile' strategy. It increases accessibility to a larger area making the whole strayegy much more practical.
I've yet to see spots for bikes/trikes/quads on trains though I think it would add to flexibility/viability to the system.
Think ebikes are adding accessibility to disabled people as well. Think bike paths that offer shorter routes than those offered by vehicles would be a strategic move...

Leaf of Life, I really love what you do, but please consider that it is against the Christian religion to see half naked women ie. women in those indecent swim suits that you showed here. Jesus Christ says that if a person has looked at a man or woman with sexual thoughts then they have committed adultery in their heart and He says that it isn’t good for a man or a woman to see someone’s erogenous zones if they aren’t married to that person, save medical or emergency scenarios. That said, I hope you will consider people like me who love their wives and avoid putting images of half naked women in your docs, because you are doing a wonderful and important job here and I really hope to keep watching these.
Those women can wear shorts and tops that cover their breasts more, that would be good and they would look like wiser women, the way you look in this video due to your shorts being an appropriate length. . Thank you for that.
I’m so thankful to see what Madrid is doing. I hope I can be part of the effort to make cities more environmentally responsible and more comfortable as well. I think they should plant vines along the sides of buildings and I think they should attach planters to the sides of buildings wherein trees or shrubs can filter and catch rain water. Also, I hope they plant Sycamore trees along the river, or trees like them that filter and store tons of water, this would be very good. Praise God for Madrid’s efforts!
Hope to see more cities doing this.
