- Sam Hyde on Perfect Guy Life with Nick Rochefort and Charls Carroll are talking about Jewish Humor effect on the way people talk and the representations of Good Likeable versions like Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David and the Bad Brett Gelman, Seth Rogan. Sam goes into how it's crazy that having a conversational fluency in Yiddish is almost normal due to the desire to be in on the joke of those making the comedies. At the end Chris brings up the Netflix Mike Myers flop Pentaverate.

One thing I expected Sam to talk about (but he didn't) is how it always misses what it aims for, and sends it audience the opposite message on accident.
Cartman in South Park is supposed to be the personification of all the "bad" things the creators wanted to satirize. Antisemitic, racist, anti-hippie (he hates 60s counterculture boomer heroes? oh my pearls!), misogynistic, greedy, etc. Yet Cartman was by far the most popular character in the show for years.
Borat's "antisemitism" is a spoof of "backwards" rural Europeans and their supposed suspicion of enlightened cosmopolitan (Brazilians), yet people found Borat's antisemitism endearing.

Sam is right about box office. To have the worth of a cultural product be determined by how much money it made AND how much money it cost to make is such a shyster thing. It’s one of the few industries where this is the norm. And it has to do with the people who were historically dominant in the industry since its inception. Pre-internet they controlled both the supply side and the demand side of the industry. Imagine living in late 80s in the Midwest. All you had was Roeper and Ebert reviewing films (“fun caper for the whole family”) and the box office numbers in the local newspaper. “Comedy starring Chevy Chase where he goes to Gaza to k Hamas (hilarity ensues)? (Budget 30m; gross: 54m) I’M IN!” “Action film about a J actor playing a white man who does to Iran to deal with the mullahs and saves the world? (Budget: 70m; gross 150m) SOLD!”
Ever since the internet (specifically Web 2.0 - i.e user-generated content) loosened their control over the demand side, there has been a series of huge big budget studio flops starting in mid 00s (in Nick’s J voice: “Wha? You dan’t wanna see tha movie? It’s a BLOCKBUSTA!!!”). People came up with the word “pozzed” and started calling out their messaging (e.g. Rogen’s Christmas film).
In comparison, video games, which became popular together with the internet, are all about user reviews (and before GG, press reviews). No one but Jason Schreier cares about how much GTA V made and how much it cost to produce.
Excellent points.
@TaorminaTales there are plenty of duds/films with no staying power from the 80s. But there is an impression they they were all good/successful, because the debate was more controlled. The backlash Ghostbusters/Charlie’s Angels/Captain Marvel got we’re not feasible back then.
The buzz was created and fully controlled by them. Read the Sony hack emails to get the idea of how they used to operate behind the scenes (the only difference is - it used to work). Read about arranged Hollywood publicity in the 50s and 60s (affairs, paparazzis). Read about the studio system. People were creating buzz amongst themselves around the latest Arnie/Stallone/Seagal flick, because in their mind they already had a carefully crafted/managed image of these people. These films are even called “star vehicles”. You went to see the latest “Arnie action film”, “Clooney caper”, “Pitt drama”. 90% of the reason these people were cast in these roles is because of audience impression/expectations, not acting ability, which is the reason trade press was filled with news about such and such being “attached” to the project and then dropped unceremoniously, because it didn’t generate enough buzz. Nowadays, nobody goes to see the “latest Chalamet drama”.
I wasn’t alive during Roger Ebert times, but I think about movies that flopped but became popular in the future like the original Blade Runner or The Thing
It was Siskel and Ebert in the 80's
@@smileydog5941 pretty sure BR was always highly acclaimed, even before the current mainstream caught on and 2049 was released I'd see people discussing it, now there's entire new generations of people who can experience them for the first time; because of BR's subject matter and setting it makes it particularly interesting seeing the times we are living in now. There are absolutely movies that only become appreciated or are recognized as a cultural importance much later after they have been released, I just don't think Blade Runner is one of them.

I'd pinpoint it to about 1996 when everyone became hyper self conscious about how of how every entertainer's career was doing. E!, Extra, Entertainment Tonight, Behind the Music, Inside the Actor's Studio etc. Tarantino and Scorsese are fine, but they talked about film making so much you can't watch a film without thinking about how it was made and how well it is doing. Nobody knew who directed anything before this. Nobody knew how any actor's career was doing before this.

How nice of them to only not charge interest on loans to their own people!!!!
Oh please, stop lying. The Torah doesn’t promote charging interest on loans to only gentiles. The Torah expresses regulations against the charging of interest in Exodus 22:24-26, Leviticus 25:36-37, and Deuteronomy 23:20-21. In Leviticus, loans themselves are encouraged, whether of money or food, emphasizing that they enable the poor to regain their independence.
I don’t know about the Talmud since it’s irrelevant and not important but based on my research, and asking people that have expertise in Talmudic teachings, loans are permissible but only without interest. Generally Jews are not allowed to charge or pay interest to another Jewish person.
However, a Jew is permitted to borrow money from a non-Jew and pay interest to him on the loan, thereby enriching him; and a Jewish person is also permitted to lend money to a non-Jew who asks for a loan and collect interest from him, just as non-Jews are permitted to lend and borrow money to and from each other with interest. It’s not some unfair arrangement like you’re making it out to be. This whole tantrum you’re throwing over interest on loans is childish; you sound like some kind of communist. Loans and interest are important as they are the two poles of the turbine that drives a healthy economy.
The reason why the Torah prohibits ribit (interest on loans) between Jews is simply because your fellow Jew is family. Charging your parents or siblings interest is wrong, and it’s the same for Jewish people.
According to Torah, The Jewish nation is meant to behave as a cohesive unit, like a single organism, each one concerned for the other’s benefit as much as with his own. Hence why I I charge my non-Jewish friends interests on loans and favours I do for them, but not for my family, whether they’re Jewish or non-Jewish members. There’s the Jewish law and then there’s the law that’s set by gentiles in their own countries, and then there are your personal values. If my parents allowed me to, I would definitely charge my family interest. practical to treat the entire world as your immediate family-especially when they do not have the same laws as you. If you did that, you would run out of resources very quickly. Instead of loans, Jews enter into partnerships called heter iska, where one provides the money while the other makes a profit with it, which both of them share. The rabbis set fixed terms on such partnerships, both to distinguish them from ribit as well as to ensure they would be conducted in a fair and equitable way for both parties.

The loving the spectrum of Brazilian likability in the thumbnail
It’s not funny if you have to add a laugh track.
Eh. I think sometimes if whatever show is actually funny the audience laughing along can actually feel earned but that's once in jew moon.
In some sitcoms, you can tell when the audience is genuinely losing their shit from a funny scene and not just “laughing.” The worst show to use fake shitty laugh tracks is undoubtedly Friends.
The producers and makers for always sunny were Jewish
The constant "dude-bro nazis are bad" jokes didn't give that away?
@@RedemptionDenied666 heard that maybe twice the whole series. Also my point is Jewish comedy is much funnier than anything else. All their shows are hits
The show never made me laugh even once. Parts were kind of funny, but never got me to actually belly laugh. It's the kind of comedy that's only funny to people who spend all their time reading leftist politics would find funny

I didn’t think anyone else saw it like that. I to noticed Brazilians love talking about their Brazilianess to an extreme degree kind of like Italian humor but even more turbo religious/traditional
Like Italians will make olive oil jokes but they won’t constantly quote Jesus or the Pope or baptism whatever
Brazilians talk about how diminishing it is to be a part of the culture and also how they made it to the point where they could have a ton of sex
I am somewhat fascinated with the meteoric rise of this secular Jewish culture which while yes often at the vanguard of progressive movements was nevertheless based in its own way like with that Norman Podhertz article. It was more a problem of group dynamics, they were set against the prevailing wasp order. It's been documented by Tom Wolfe. Eric Kaufmann's book is also good. David Mamet who I quite like also captures that zeitgeist
Sarah Silverman looks she could be and extra on Ratatouille.
I saw Mike Myers at church, recently. I think he just watched too much TV, drove around too much, and lost touch with reality a little. But I think he can regain clarity. He has endured immense pressure as a celebrity and will persevere his way into new and transcendental experiences. Till then, I can spend more time at the urinal than he did in 1997.
I’m from Louisiana. I grew up in a Jewish vacuum.
Every Jewish joke and stereotype I ever learned came from Seinfeld
It's true. But I still loved Seinfeld (the show).
Was able to be funny with out being vulgar or swearing.
thats totally not true at all in relation to seinfeld
It was as funny as a coma

J's comedians are all painfully unfunny and meek in person, so they try to craft written jokes. Seinfeld, Woody, Friedland, etc.

this is nick every time sam asks if he knows what hes saying: "yeah, its like when you see a mercedes dealer and he's chopping his wife's wrists"
He’s not explaining it well at all but yes it is strange that we’ve been conditioned to normalize Jewish culture. All of our male hero’s always looked ugly and weird but we never understood why
yeah they happen to look brazillian like sam.
What you just explained is what they have been trying to do for several millennias in different countries and empires. They all threww them out because they were “anti semitic” while being semites themselves for the most part. Go figure
Probably because they’re made to be relatable and the average person is ugly and weird???

It’s especially pretty rough watching him when he does The Palace with Erick. I stopped watching because he’s always hammered, and combining that with the skitzo energy is a little “much” to say the least.
