I think most cases could stem from people not having enough open space. You want to make sure that nothing is blocking the back of the PS5. You want to have heat moving away much as possible so that cool air can intake. If you live in a hot room, maybe move your system into a living room with better room temps overall.

Given that all of Sony's marketing material for the PS5 has the console standing vertically (even the image on the front of the box has it vertical) it would be a really bad look for them if it turned out that having the PS5 vertical for a long period of time caused major issues. The hype around it was because people had spent a ridiculous amount of money on this and the internet just seemed to make it more of a problem than it actually is. I still had my concerns though but this video helped put the nail in the coffin on my opinion.

It's not a hoax my friend. At all. It happens to all of them eventually, even people last year who said it was a hoax are now finally admitting it's a problem because it started happening to them. Every fat PS5 is doomed to have this problem. I fix at least 10 PS5s every week with the same problem, im a qualified tech and I've been doing this for 27 years. When I tell you it's a problem trust me, sony won't admit anything because they want your money. Many parents pay for their kids PS5s and a company like sony would love for them to break it and buy a new one. It's just business to them, sony hasn't cared about its customers since the late 80s.

I used liquid metal between my 8700K and the IHS years ago and its been nice and cool under its water block ever since. If the application is correct, and the mounting pressure is correct, then its going to be fine. Liquid metal is dangerous if applied poorly but if it is done properly its not really as dangerous as people make it out to be.

@EatMe420 what you just said. I'm not saying every model is affected but if sony is so adamant that only a few models are affected they should be replacing those models regardless of warranty. It's a manufacturing defect that was doomed from the start, I've had washer machines that were years out of warranty and they got replaced for an issue that was going to happen regardless of warranty.
If the problem is as small as sony says, they should have no issue replacing affected models.

ive been using LM ever since it first beccame available for purchase about 10-15 years ago, on CPUs and GPUs(mostly with water cooling loops) and i am suprised itss still not well known how to apply it properly. If you are using it on a flat surfaces(most chips are with few exceptions of curved or damaged ones) you have to paint it on both surfaces of contact. This means you would not be able to see any pools but literraly use a tiny amount to simply cover 100% of both contact surfaces - sort of like painting a house. it takes patience but this way nothing will leak out no matter how you store or use it. Most people(including Sony PS5) use waaay too much of LM. I have done LM on few PS4s and PS4 Pros and it still looks the same if checked years after.

@@thelionszen3352exactly, with LM less is always more- whatever you think is little enough - apply quater of that and again the goal is to "paint" both contact points with as little of LM as humanly possible. If you see reflective pools gathering - youve done too much. Perfect LM application looks like a perfect mirror without any bumps or gaps on close up, you have to be patient and just keep "painting" with something like a qtip(make sure its the one where little hairs dont fall out). If you put too much - use dropper or syringe to suck it back up(quality LM is not cheap) and you can use it on something else later since it doesnt seem to have an expiration date(still have a tube of my first LM from at least 15 years ago and it still works as it was new). I dont use anything else for heat transfer(and havent used tape or foam insulators(although its a good idea) to catch run off in a decade - not a single problem with hundreds of applications)- only LM since when its applied properly(read above) there is 0% risk of it leaking and shorting components simply because there isnt enough of it to leak but more than enough to cover all the microfractures on the contact surfaces(always do both sides)

If they did, I don't recall. Nonetheless I wish people would be more clear about the dry spot issue and finding out if the consoles being used vertically is indeed the primary cause of this problem. Ultimately, we can't just assume that based on these repair videos simply because there have been over 30 million PS5's sold at this point so it's hard to gauge exactly how prevalent the issue is or the exact cause. Everyone was far too focused on the liquid metal leaking when that was never really an issue but it seems like the dry spot issue really isn't being addressed all that much and until I have a solid answer I'll keep mine horizontal even though I prefer how it looks vertically.

Just one thing I'll add about it shifting and hot/dry spots since I haven't seen people mentioning this in detail:
Many people has expressed when opening the PS5 about it having seemingly "excessive" amount of liquid metal
And I think that's by design, to basically fill the whole space inside the gasket so there's no empty space for the liquid metal to shift
Unless after some time or due to external environmental conditions such as climate that it gets "burned off" through slow evaporation
Then the hot/dry spots might start happen, so generally no need to worry for a a long time if it's in good conditions; or keep it horizontal if you have the space left (which I don't have with the other systems that were there already so I stood them all up now; I've just always preferred horizontal but it's not something that worries me, just to take into account since gravity is a thing

Could i apply regular thermal paste instead of liquid metal or would that be too "weak" compared to the liquid metal?

Yes you can add regular thermal paste

This will only affect PS5 consoles that have been dissembled and repaired by a third-party repair shop technician. Your PS5 will not malfunction if you already bought it straight from the store as a brand new console, you can safely place it vertically.

Putting your PlayStation 5 horizontal is the best scenario. Having it vertical could cause the liquid metal to pull to one side causing a dry spot and eventually causing the components to overheat.

Exactly this i dont understand why is it hard for ppl to understand that vertical will 100% cause dry spots leading to overheat , also high chances over the years to leak eventualy
I mean its simple physics n common sense.
Ppl just tend to deny this n say oh mine is fine since launch ,well open that fucker n see the dry spots on the chip 😂😂

I get the feeling that the people complaining about their PS5s dying when stored vertically aren’t keeping it clean and/or in a good environment. This just popped up at a convenient time for me, gonna get a ps5 in a bit over a week, and you’re the second channel that has said it won’t kill the console.

I clean mine, and I noticed my movies were skipping right out of the package, but as soon as I laid it down and solved the problem.

    • @jordanking7711
      @jordanking7711 Před rokem +2

I agree. This is just like the issue right at the beginning, with people complaining that their PS5 consoles were shutting down, because they kept their consoles in a poorly ventilated environment to begin with (e.g. and enclosed cabinet). I mean isn't that just common sense. Wouldn't surprise me if that is part of this issue too.

Vertical I noticed it stayed dust free but pulled in less air so this liquid metal myth scared me into laying her down she stayed cooler but she was packed with dust in a few days.

The big problem with liquid metal is its ability to pretty much infiltrate and ruin the cohesiveness of most metal substances, a tiny speck can do a whole lot of damage and no one has ever thought of the Gallium element when heated, becomes an oxide which is pretty destructive to your components. Some are also beginning to suspect Sony did this to install planned obscelescence, that from the time at factory to time in use, its a ticking timer that will always fail regardless of upright or flat because the stuff just attacks everything inside the PS5 over time. Most of us old overclockers we soon gave up on the stuff simply as it was machine death if it got out and it was so unpredictable, it could escape with relative ease migrating against dialectic greases, shrouds, it was better practice to just lap your cooler and lid faces up to about 8000 grit finish and use a decent ceramic TIM. Often we would take a new cooler and have it surface ground to true before lapping, the last one I had done was my Coolermaster V8 and the thermal exchange on that was amazing due to me polishing it to a very high mirror on the copper side and Arctic Silver Ceramic between CPU and cooler base.

Random place to comment but I recommend doing this for the Xbox series x.
The ports on it are soo large that if you don’t play it for a few days or have cats soooo much stuff seeps inside. Since flipping it, I’ve gathered a lot less cat hair and overall dust in the opening ducts

Eh, some failures happen but it is a rare case. The Playstation designer said it's the same whether it's standing or laying down.
I have space on the gaming rack, so I put it laying down. Perhaps there are also cases of liquid metal oozing out around the circuit board, stored in a laying down position, who knows?
