- Hi everyone! I'm back, for now at least, I've been super busy lately with school so haven't really had time for videos. Hope you enjoy!

i think NPMD has the biggest diversity on people's rankings but honestly I think everyone is just happy to re listen to the music.

I don't blame ppl for liking different ones more than me bc all of them are great. Almost all of them are my favorite song other than Cool as I think I am (although I loved the reprise and I kinda go back and forth with that song), Just for once, and the summoning, Go Go Nighthawks as well. The few that aren't tied as my favorites are still really good songs. All of the songs have amazing singing as well so it makes ranking even harder.

One of my fav things in the entire musical is the "I'm not a loser" riff that shows up in so many of the songs
absolutely same here, it's so so good. my favourite instance of it is probably richie's (poor richie)

Weirdly there isn't a song that I'm really into but there are a bunch of leitmotifs I like.

@@officialmilkman491She’s mixing a performance for the fictional “Barbecue Monologues” play whilst weaving in her own desires. I get why you’re confused because I was as well. That’s why Max applauds the performance because in-story, Ruth was doing a section of the play by herself.

The only problem i have with the Hatchet Town song is the no audience reaction for the cameos, even though i know it was added in later, it throws me off a little.
yeah I noticed that too when I was watching it. I think in general there's a lot less audience reactions than in Black Friday in particular so it's a switch. Hatchet Town is still my favourite though
They should've at least added that stock audio cheering sound they use for a lot of the Hatchetfield shows (When Becky and Tom kiss during take me back for example)
Yeah, we didn't see the musical.
We saw ... stuff that was in the musical but that was shot outside the musical.
The summoning is pretty bad about this : We have maybe 5 seconds of the actual musical. The rest is just close up that really put me out of the show for a minute.
It's hard to be awed when you think there is no way all close up could have been made during the play. It's hard to enjoy the audience participation when the audience didn't participate in what we saw.
It was a bastard thing between a musical and a movie ... And it got the worst of both world.
@@Awelbeckk I agree with you about it being a bit overkill with the shot after close-ups. Yet, the video quality is much higher because of it. I'm personally a big fan of seeing the whole stage too. But, I suppose it's kinda done on purpose. Those who want to watch the show for free/at home will get the edited cut up version, if you want the raw version you'd either have to pay for that cut or pay to see the live show. It's incentive to see the actual thing imo.

Besides from what I saw there wasn’t a lot to see on the stage other then the actors anyway and I prefer the clear tho bit cut up part instead of the hard to see and focus but complete part

I have to give it credit. Of all the songs from this show to get stuck in my head the next day it was that one.
Ngl it's literally my favourite song in the soundtrack 😭🙈🙈 but I adore literally all of the songs - they're all so good - so it's hard to rank them imo😭

i love how in literal monster, on 'doomed to be a victim' max grabs kyle's shoulders right on the beat of 'victim' and you briefly see the fear in kyle's eyes, foreshadowing that the jocks are also being bullied by max, it's just much harder to notice from the outside since their response to the situation isn't fight, flight, or freeze, it's fawn (aka go along with it and try to endear yourself to the threat so it doesn't hurt you - there's a whole bunch of papers on the 'fawn' response to adrenaline, which was first noticed in studies of abusive family dynamics, it's really interesting look it up). obvs this isn't to say they don't benefit from the social position of being max's "friend", or that they're not responsible for their actions. but it's awesome that starkid's depiction of bullying shows how anyone can be a target, even "popular" kids.

exactly what I was thinking when watching this. for me, I'd switch 'High School is Killing Me' with 'Best Of You'. ( not that 'Best of You' isn't good or anything. its very early 2000's pop punk and reminds me of Starkid's Little White Lie series, but it just didn't connect with me as much as the first song did ).
Ruth's solo is amazingggg! As a nerd that had dreams of middle class domesticity and normalcy, this song struck a chord with me. Ruth just wants to be normal, I feel that.
The "I'm Not A Loser" leitmotif brings it all together, this isn't just her performing, it's her coming into her own. Really makes her death so much sadder, given that she's just found out what she can be, not just a bisexual perv, but a singer and actress.

I love that the style of the music in this show feels so different than the other hatchfield shows yet they still used a lot of the motifs from the other shows. Honestly I think it’s my favorite show of starkid’s original pieces
It feels like they took the opportunity to write their High School Musical, which did and didn't work for different people. I loved it - the more narrow genre focus made the show feel tighter to me.
YES the "look what happens, nightmare time" motif right after max kills richie and the "we will build a portal just for" melody to introduce the lords in black make the moments so much more chilling, i adore it
The Devil works fast but Starkid Potter is faster
HatchetTown, Nerdy Prudes, The Summoning and High School is Killing me are my personal favorites. can't get them out of my head

No way "High School is Killing Me" so low...
Hatchet Town is great musically, but visually it's fantastically done. The way Lauren upped the energy of the (frankly identical) choruses by increasing the number of times they shifted their weight (every other beat first chorus, every beat second chorus, three times every two beats the final one) is brilliant and subtle.

Yeah, I’ve watched the whole thing three times, I’ve watched The Summoning over twenty times. It’s so good.
I’m so surprised High School is Killing Me was so far back.
I feel like 'Just For Once' being on the bottom of so many lists is indicative that a lot (not all, but a lot) of SK fans don't interact with musical anthologies/revues. There's a lot of self contained musical storytelling in Ruth's number that both ties into her character and also plays well as a classic revue ballad. It's the kind of thing that's never been in any of the 16 SK shows before nor did I think it was the kind of thing Jeff would write in earnest.
The closest we've had was probably the Hidgens number from TGWDLM but it felt like the joke was both on Hidgens himself, modern pop shows, and the broader implications of Hidgens luring in the infected. Some people might not be prepared for NPMD to come screeching to a halt to let an otherwise one-note character like Ruth have a profound moment of exploration but after 39 musicals from SK I'm happy to see they're willing to do something like this.
Makes me excited for their 50th show next year!!

Even though it has no real relation to the rest of the show, Just For Once still one of my favourites. Tells such a sad, haunting story of suburbia and is so well written and performed. Gets stuck in my head. To quote Corey Dorris, it's "fucking transcendent" 😅

I've honestly never been a huge fan of Lauren's singing. I don't love the song either.
Yeah, i dont like it at all. I know why they did it. They had "show stopping number" and "deck the halls". I love both of those songs. But this one was not great

I am so glad I’m not alone. That whole BBQ/Just for Once was the worst part of the show for me. I get it, they wanted to give Lauren a song, but the whole thing just felt out of pace and took me out. We could have done without it, I believe.

* 15. Dirty Dudes Must Die - This feels like it's just here for the sake of "oh it's Hatchetfield we needed a twist ending somehow"
* 14. Bury The Bully - It's just too short, feels a little unnecessary. I kind of agreee with Richie's "oh god she's snapping again"
* 13. Go Go Nighthawks - It's good but the others are just better
* 12. Dirty Girl - I like the harmonies but not a fan of the actual themes the song encompasses (there's a reason I've not watched MAMD)
* 11. Just For Once - LAUREN SLAY FINALLY A SONG IN HER RANGE
* 10. Cool As I Think I Am (Reprise) - I feel bad putting this one so low but all the others are just so good, I do genuinely like this one though
* 9.The Best Of You - It hurts having to put this one so low, Jeff just made so many bangers
* 8. Cool As I Think I Am - A little lacklustre in my opinion but still amazing, reminds of the Starship and Senior Year era where Joey got tons of I Want songs
* 7. Nerdy Prudes Must Die - Jon and Will are both AMAZING in this song but it just doesn't really feel like it's impactful enough
* 6. Literal Monster - I really wish I could put this higher
* 5. Hatchet Town - We stan the cameos, again reminiscent of older Starkid where Act 2 always opened with a group number
* 4. Bully The Bully - Gonna be honest, this is only so high up because Mariah absolutely SLAYS THOSE HIGH NOTES SHE'S A QUEEN

The new ones are great but it feels like I am watching a musical that was written by a completely different person

@@bredbox231 I put it low cause I understand what they're doing, they're making another Working Boys or a Santa Klaus is going to Highschool, but it doesn't hit. It's funny, the idea of weird heartfelt monologue over a grill. However, I don't think it's funny enough to have a full song and even tho Lauren put her damn heart and soul into and killed it, I just don't personally like the song. I don't like the flow, or the lyrics or how random it is. But either way, Lauren killed it.

As much as i loved every song, hatchet town was one that gave me so much CHILLS. I thought it would be underrated since i full thought the top ones voted or preferred are the summoning and the love songs. So yeah, i love starkid so much, this stuff is quality content for free

Hatchet Town might objectively be one of the greatest Starkid songs ever. And personally, it gives me such huge Feast or Famine vibes which makes me love it even more

I wish people had more appreciation for "Just for Once." Yes, it sounds out of place and weird on the first watch, but if you actually listen to the lyrics, you realize it's Ruth's defining character song. It's her picturing her ideal life but being so used to being disappointed that she doesn't know how to separate disappointment from her identity. Even in her perfect future, she's disenchanted with everything around her and can't see the things that went right; only the bad stuff counts. It's actually really heartbreaking once you notice that. They just messed up by framing it as if Ruth isn't talking about herself. By making it seem like a character she's playing, all of the impact is lost.
The problem is Ruth is more of a minor/supporting character so the audience doesn't care about her as much as they do about Steph, Pete, or Grace. The song itself is fine and Lauren's singing is fantastic but it just feels like the whole show is being driven to a halt for a song that doesn't add much to the show. Maybe if it was shorter it would work for me but as is I just find it boring. But then again I feel the same way about Show Stopping Number and it's one of Starkid's most popular songs so what do I know.
@@SweenyTodd98maybe that's why I like the song and find it's relevance then. I mean I am an absolute slut for anything remotely sondheim esk, but I really didn't resonate with Grace and nor did I really care about her character throughout. I found her insufferable which I guess is the point but it made me not want to engage with her. And alongside hating anytime she mentioned sex or maturbation (probs something to do with my asexuality lol), I couldn't stand her. Although Ruth was more inappropriate, it felt like a quick passing joke that was quickly over rather than an important plot point in Grace's case. With Ruth and the Telemarketers and then also Steph touching her arm and she's in love, we see just how lonely Ruth is, which I think made the impact of Just for Once stronger for me

Honestly despite all of barbecue monologues, and also Just got Once being kind of a wildcard, like deck the halls of northville high, but It is still one of the best songs, in my opinion due to vocals

Hatchet town is SO GOOOD. It's the "down, down, down" progression and then the build up after that gets me.
Hatchet Town is amazing!! I listened to it for hours on repeat after watching the show the first time because it was so catchy and Bryce Charles' solo bit is transcendent.

The amount of sheer catharsis I felt when I heard all of the lords in black sing made that song at least in the top 3 but I can completely understand every placement. The songs were especially good in this one in particular.
