Also have a carbon monoxide alarm in your house. In several places and with the batteries in. Also all animals will react a lot sooner than people will. If your pets are acting strangely and freaking out, or worse, non-reactive despite being healthy, there could be serious problems.
@@critter2 it depends on the situation, while carbon monoxide is an odorless gas is produced by incomplete combustion which a gas flame can admit a smell of unburned fuel which is a slightly sour smell. If the appliance venting is not terminated properly and exhaust is getting into the living space and it's burning clean enough to not make a smell it would be enough to overcome people when all the windows and doors are shut tightly.
6 months ago I had a pretty scary carbon monoxide situation at home. My eyes were all bloodshot. If my sister hadn't gotten me outta the house I'd've died from the deadly fumes.
Thanks to many awareness and incidents that happen, companies that build appliances have became safer, and that also FireX, Kidde, etc. Saved over many lives from death.
Same thing happened to me in 2003. I was taking a shower and I suddenly got so dizzy that I could not stand up. Then as I crawled out of the shower I got very sick and threw up violently. I had no idea what was wrong with me. It was like I suddenly had a bad case of the flu. After about 15 minutes I felt better and rested on my bed. Later than evening we realized it was Co poisoning I was suffering from when a person working on our house remodeling just happened to notice that the chimney to the furnace was open. He said, "This is very dangerous, this should not be open like this. Was anybody in the house sick?" My mom told him that I had been sick, and he said, "Well this is why." So he fixed the problem, and the following day a serviceman from our gas company came to check our appliances, and when we told him what had happened, he said we were very lucky that no one died.

The dad being a doctor probably helped as he knew some of these symptoms his whole family was exhibiting resembled carbon monoxide poisoning. It helped them figure out what the real problem was even faster.
My Family and I where in the same thing. it was very scary.. We where to far into it that we couldn't move anything and had pounding headaches... my dad called 911 on his cell and collapsed. When I woke up I was in this tube thing and I started to panic but then I heard my Uncle's voice telling me that I'm ok and safe now.

We are all fortunate today to live in a time where carbon monoxide detectors can be purchased for a decent price. There is not a rational reason why *every* home should not have at least one... along with smoke/fire detectors- the kind that do *not* hook into the house wiring, but rather run on batteries. We test all of ours on the same day once a month, and change all of the batteries on the same day every single year... no matter if the batteries still have power (use batteries that still have power in children's toys or other non-important devices). There is not a price that you can put on life, it is as simple as that. Additionally, a lot of people are unaware that there are places that carbon monoxide can leach out of the ground into your home. You can't see it. You can't smell it. If you have symptoms, they may be simple headaches or feeling like a cold or flu. *The Silent Killer.* Our family of 8, especially our son, was saved from death by carbon monoxide poisoning. We had had remodeling done on our house for several months and we were so glad when it was over. What we didn't know until it was too late, was that the contractor had covered and sheet-rocked the fresh air vent from our downstairs water heater- the guy even removed the metal pipe that ran from the heater to the outside! It took a while for it to build up in the house, but build up it did, and the downstairs detector finally went off (the same day I had just been released from the hospital after a lengthy stay- I still had my medical bracelets on my wrist!) My son had dangerous levels in his blood since his room was right next to where the water heater was, but fortunately, he only had to stay overnight for observation and treatment. The rest of the family were allowed to go home after blood-work... and once the fire department had shut down the water heater and aired the house until the readings were normal. The carelessness of a contractor could have cost our entire family their lives. We forced them to come and repair/replace what they had done, made them pay for a different and independent inspector from the man who had "cleared" their work the first time, and reported them all to the BBB. We could have sued them, but we were fortunate that our medical insurance covered our medical costs, and they went out of business later that year in any case. Our family was saved by a $25 device. Please protect yourself and your family from *both* the "silent killer" and the deadly smoke and fire that claim hundreds of lives every year! Especially if you have anything in your home that uses natural gas or propane, or live in an area where it is in the ground, please get at least one detector- placed low to the ground near where each gas powered unit is located. And no home should ever be without multiple smoke/fire detectors that are *not* wired into the home. ~Peace!

Man, I remember this episode more than any other. I saw it when I was in the 4th grade, and it made me super paranoid. For years, I'd constantly go to the basement and check the gas heater to make sure it wasn't going to kill us.
I really do like how they have the dad who was a physician actually act like a normal person you know what a doctor actually is and he wasn't like portrayed to be this Einstein know all the answers kind of person I mean carbon monoxide poisoning is pretty hard to diagnose or actually see what's happening this ain't the movies where the people literally know carbon monoxide by smell or taste this is something that you can literally go to sleep one night and not wake up because of Garmin monoxide poisoning happens all the f****** time and again really do appreciate rescue 911 showing the dad a actual person and not a guy in a lab coat 24/7 with a stethoscope

Rescue 911 last time we had a gas leak in our house it was coming from the basement it was leading to carbon monoxide and our carbon monoxide detector did not go off but we knew to call the gas company we all five of our cats out of the house and we put them In the garage And then we back into the house to pack our clothes and our other possessions and then we went to stay at a hotel until the gas leak was out of our house.
When my dad would visit, we'd stay at his aunt's house. She had carbon monoxide detectors in the bedrooms, and they ALWAYS read 0. Until one day I happened to glance over, and it didn't. Not a high number, but not zero. So, I immediately told my dad. Turns out, there was a leak in the gas oven, but the detectors only registered when the oven was on, so it took a while to figure out. Thankfully, we were all fine, and they fixed it ASAP. But, she lived alone with her brother, both were elderly, she was physically deteriorated, and he had dementia. God knows if/when they would've noticed.

You and your kids were very fortunate that you were a former army medic and therefore knew what was going on. If you hadn’t been a army medic and hadn’t known what it was then you and your kids could have easily died from the carbon monoxide. I am glad that you and your family are alright.

I’d sure hate for this to happen to my family especially if it was me. Something tells me they’re forever in the debt of those who saved their lives and can never give them enough thanks. I am not too fond of this one. I can't stand any mentioning of vomiting/throwing up. That is something I absolutely HATE with a passion. In the "100 Lives Saved" episode, a family moving into a new house in St. Louis, Missouri experienced the same thing, but there's no mention of that specifically.
We have carbon monoxide detectors in our house they are very loud it's like a high pitched squealing sound it hurts my ears but we will know if there is carbon monoxide inside the house so we can go out before we get sick or maybe die from carbon monoxide poisoning.

We have carbon monoxide detectors in our house they are very loud it's like a high pitched squealing sound it hurts my ears but we will know if there is carbon monoxide inside the house so we can go out before we get sick or maybe die from carbon monoxide poisoning.
