Bergkamp was a great teamplayer with a first touch and vision out of this world. Hands down the most creative player I have ever seen on a pitch. Zidane had similar traits but he was more of a leader type.. A bit more influential if you will. They are very much comparable yet very different.

  • @fanfam
    @fanfam Před 7 lety +46

    In the 1998 WC I was 15 at the time. Cheering for Holland. Holland was doing great. France was doing great. My twin brother and I saw both Bergkamp and Zidane as key players of the tournament. We told each other after the game against Argentina and reassured ourselves that if we played against France that we had Bergkamp, but they had Zidane. Of course we both overlooked Brazil in our enthusiasm and away was Bergkamp. The brilliance from the brazilian team was old fashion samba. Players like Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Bebeto....just invincible. But even with that fact Holland was giving them a fight they would not forget. We could have won. Yes Holland 1998 was strong and charismatic. Holland was there at the top of the world unconditional and not debatable.
    We thought Zidane had more charisme and he was in form...we feared him and the French team. On the other hand we had Bergkamp with his magic and he was to be the man that would drag Holland to eternal glory.
    If you are young, you experience it more intense not distracted by the bigger picture of things. But those times are gone. Even in football.

      "Holland gave fight to Brazil" is not correct description. Bergkamp was week at that game. However, Brazil got bombed from both wings and Kluivert had multiple chances with the head. So I've thought about this a lot, and perhaps I have finally come to my conclusion. I won't necessarily choose one over the other, but I can break it down as such:
    Zidane had an immense presence. He had unreal amounts of flair on the pitch, the play had to go through him to see the best of him.
    Bergkamp was more subtle, and he just had this near water-like state when on the pitch... the team's play just flowed right through him.
    Almost a case of the unstoppable force vs the irresistible force

    Nothing against ZIdane (whom I admire alot), but there was an abnormal stat that Henry and Zidane almost never assisted each other. Differences in position. Bergkamp mostly played right behind the main striker, where his great control and vision allowed him to take one touch and release the ball. He fitted so well in that arsenal team definitely the best foreign player to ever play in the PL.whereas zidane played mostly in the midfield and dictated the pace of the game, either slowing the match down or going for a quick attack. For me what was amazing about both these players is that their control allowed them to receive the ball anywhere on the pitch and you could see neither of them panick, even if they were surrendered by defenders, they would just calmly play there way out not using their speed or athleticism but their brains

    Zidane had a special way of keeping the ball moving up the pitch and his touch always left some momentum with the ball which he would redirect to control the flow of the game, whether that meant up the pitch or to another teammate, all in one motion.
    Bergkamp had an equally, if not more beautiful touch, but it was more equipped for his role as a striker, which killed the balls momentum much more than Zidane's touch, which allowed him to use the limited space he had moving up the pitch to the best of his ability whether than meant shooting or going for an assist.
    Truly some of the greatest technical talents to ever grace the game.

    Elegance does not mean aggressiveness. Everything is easy. That's why
    Dennis Bergkamp is the more elegant player. His game was without
    aggression or athleticism. Everyone can see it in the way Dennis
    Bergkamp scores goals. There are a lot of powerless goals like lifts.
    The goalkeeper still has no chance. That's why players like Zidane
    scored more goals themselves and Bergkamp is the master of the assist.

    • @a_guinness
      @a_guinness Před 6 měsíci

      Well put...although I'd take exception to a small point that you made, I don't think athleticism and elegance are opposites, I think if Bergkamp had more pace and power in his game it wouldn't in any way take away from the grace he displayed on the field.
      For me he's the second most elegant player of all time, behind Johan Cruyff, who did have more physicality and speed to his game, but also exhibited a balletic, gazelle-like running style. Indeed Rudolph Nureyev, famous Russian ballet dancer spoke highly of Cruyff.
      Also Zidane didn't score more goals than Bergkamp, neither for club nor country, but Bergkamp for sure was the better passer and chance creator.

Think of the talent around that era. Unbelievable player, had everything, skill, accurate shot/pass, good assist record, could play either wing or as a forward.

    Both players have tremendous foot eye coordination. But for sheer technique and timing, bergkamp was better. What zizou did with three to four touches, iceman did it with one. Look at the goals he scored against spurs, Leicester, Newcastle and Argentina, only a genius could pull those stuffs. Zidane had overall better athleticism, as he was stronger and had more power. Bergkamp had more finesse, which could only be rivaled by berbatov and matt le tissier.

    Pure technique i would give it to Zidane, the ball literally glues to his feet. When it comes to brain and how his touch affects the game i would give it to Bergkamp. As a CF it was no better partner than Bergkamp, goals and assists came from his touch most of the times. Zidane's impact was on the central of the midfield, which usually is the ''build-up play'' part. Both great, but goals wins you games, thats why i give my vote to Bergkamp.
