Growing up is when you realize that Edgar would have been the defacto beneficiary. All he had to do was make sure the cats were well taken care of. Oh and did he seriously think that each cat would live 108 years?

If you listen to his calculations as well, he's multiplying their ages by 4, as if the kittens will be living in succession of each other rather than all dying around the same time. It's not the weirdest part, but it doesn't help.
That's why learning maths is important, kids. You might just save yourself the trouble of a wacky, convoluted plan that will screw you out of an ageing opera singers fortune...that and it being a core skill for life, but the fortune thing too :P

While we all joke about Edgar's apparent lack of basic arithmetic, something to note is that he actually catches himself and says "No, it's less than that." He probably does know how math works, but just wasn't thinking clearly due to being so upset at the fact that the cats were getting the inheritance before him.
Though that still wouldn't excuse him believing that cats actually have nine lives.

It wouldn't even be hard for Edgar to do:
      >The cats already really liked him and regarded him as family
      >he was good at taking care of the cats, right down to making their favorite meal, taking them on rides around town, and grooming/cleaning up after them.
aside from that simple, easy task, he'd effectively be handed over the entire estate, since the cats couldn't care less about money (or spend it for that matter.) He was basically going to be handed the keys to the kingdom; leaving the money "to the cats" was largely a symbolic gesture of how much Madame loved her pets.
he did all of these shenanigans for nothing, and lost his job, his respect, and betrayed the people who thought most highly of him. sad. =(

Not to defend Edgar, but up until this point he was a faithful butler and maybe he thought he was family. Even though he still would've been in charge of the fortune it would still be rough to know animals come before you. Edgar is still one of the more sympathetic villains, he didn't let George fall down the stairs, and he didn't kill or separate the cats. Rather than evil, i'd just say Edgar was stupid and greedy. Or at least he didn't start out evil, anyway.

Funny the difference of watching this movie at first as a kid versus watching it now as an adult. I can't say I agree with Edgar wanting to destroy the cats, but it is pretty crazy to want your pets to inherit an entire fortune, estate, and all your other possessions rather than a human you consider close to you, even if that person would still get something eventually.
When I was a kid, I thought Madame's request made sense, since we all knew the cats were smart and sentient like humans, and they're Disney cats, so that makes them really special, right? It was because of this, and her love for her cats, that made me wonder if she had some kind of special connection and insight into just how special her cats are, which made her request for her will make even more sense to me, and made me respect her more. As an adult looking back on that, um, it's not like Madame or anyone else knew that about the cats; to the humans, they were just pets. So yeah, all around, her request makes no sense. LOL
I gotta say, though, I still love Madame Adelaide. She may be irrational in dealing with her pets, but she still has such a grace and gentleness to her, and a love for those around her that is simply contagious. I still love her. :)

@GeraldTheBusDriver well, considering edgar seems to be in his 50s(maybe 40s),and that well treated indoor cats can live up to 20 years old,if the cats could very well outlive him, especially if the kittens had kittens of their own.
Also, considering we don't know all of the conditions of the will, maybe edgar could only spend money for the cat's benifit,as long as they lived (though obviously allowing him to spend money on taking care of the house and his living costs),which is why he would want to get rid of them.
You gotta feel bad for Edgar, devoting his time and life to take care of his mistress,(who doesn't seem to have any children to give inheritance money to) and appearing to be a perfectly decent guy/butler from what little we see of him before this scene, and then you find out her wealth is going to be given to her godamn cats, who have a good chance of outliving you.

@GeraldTheBusDriver as would I,i mean,i dont think Edgar would've minded taking care of the cats after the old woman's death, since thats pretty much what he did already, but having the fortune being left to them was just taking the piss.
I quite like the aristocats, even if it isnt the best traditionally drawn film ever made by disney,i feel like a huge part of that comes from me watching the living crap out of it as a kid,to the point where when i was that age,i could practically act out huge chunks of scenes/lines in my head(i had a number of films, cartoon episodes that i pratically memorized as a kid)

My honest opinion and comment about this scene of when Madame makes a will and Edgar becoming jealous of the cat being inherit first, I always doing this kind of act and possibly comedy sketch by myself just for fun. Even though Edgar is the villain, he is the most funniest character in this Disney classic movie.
If I were making my own lines, I would think about how I react to everything Madame says about her will about inheritance.
As Edgar listens to Madame's conversation about making her will, he was delighted, the way he dances at this part 0:27, when he thought that he was inherited to the mansion at first, but then when he heard that the cats are inherit first, he was so shocked, especially at this part 0:33 where he said 'Caaats!', 0:43 Disappointed about this, he plans to get rid of the cats in order to seize the fortune instead like he believes that the 4 cats have nine lives and he impatiently couldn't wait that long.

But instead she basically wrote, "I'm giving everything to animals even though they don't know how to use money. Edgar can have them once they all kick the bucket".
