at the time of release, ME! was not very well received (well it wasn’t as commercially successful as it was anticipated to be), the same goes for its album “lover”. people gave her backlash for the “hey kids, spelling is fun” line because they thought it was silly. years later, that album and the song is one of her most commercially successful and well-loved records. I remember in her documentary, during that time of her life, she thought her career was dying down and it was coming to an end. it’s just crazy that she thought that since she’s at her peak right now.

Because that was her talking in retrospect about a very dark time in her life, what led to thinking like that and how destructive it is for your self esteem. I wanted to watch the whole video first, as always I loved your reaction!
The snake to butterfly transition signifies the reputation era(mostly black and white, snakes were a focal point in it) to the lover era(butterflies, colors, rainbows)
The painting in the 'cool chicks' were The Chicks (formerly The Dixie Chicks), they are a band, Taylor listened to them growing up and was inspired by them to go into the music industry (she even said that she wouldn’t have become a musician if it hadn’t been for them)
A fun fact: the 'young daughters' are Taylor's cats and she ended up adopting the kitten that was given to her here! (Meredith, Olivia and Benjamin are their names)
Taylor wanted this music video to portray everything that makes her her, that's why it's full of colors, rainbows, unicorns, cats, etc.
I think i'm speaking for most of us when i say that we'd love it if you made an extended version of the video. I genuinely love watching your explanations of how everything works!

The snake transforming into butterflies represents the end of the Reputation era, and a return to Taylor’s colorful, cheerful brand and approach. It’s symbolic of her letting go Reputation.

Taylor said that she wanted this to be like opening up her head and peering into her creativity. She wanted all groups represented. Rainbow represents the LGBTQIA+ crowd. The media is coming after their group so bad so they’re almost literally saying “there’s only only one of you and be happy about it!”
This has everything that she loves and what she/they stand for. A really wild video but but overly fun and super over the top. She spoke to Brandon during about this video as they were making this song. He said “I’m im!!” She almost squealed with excitement. Super cute.

loved your reaction and loved the skit 🫶🏻.
this was the video for the first single from her album “lover” (you caught the easter egg) so the snake transitioning in butterflies it’s symbolical to the transition from the reputation era (dark, snakes, haunted) to the new lover era (colorful, lovely, daylight).
also, the tiny cat brandon gave taylor in the music video ended up getting adopted by taylor herself. it’s called benjamin and you can see it with taylor on the cover of time’s person of the year. 💗
I would like you to react to: I can see you (taylor’s versions) which is all a metaphor of her reclaiming her work with our help and also I bet you think about me (taylor’s version) which continues the jake gyllenhaal narrative going on in the Red album.

    Great reaction.
The snake in the first scene symbolizes the reputation album, it’s now pink and turns into a butterfly, which means that reputation era transforms itself into a Lover era.
Lover era’s colour is pink (and rainbow), its symbol is a butterfly, which means she has overcome her dark time and now become happier, healthier and more positive, and focus on spreading love to others as well as to herself.
The picture of a lady group is the Dixie Chicks band whom I believe her mom’s favourite band.
The kitten that Brendon “proposed” 😅 to her is now her cat whose name Benjamin Button, she adopted him on the same day filming this music video.

I wish this song met higher approval with Swifties and Sinners alike. I think both fan bases (which many were both) expected something “Unbelievably poetically relatable” (Taylor’s Super power) and “a PHENOMENAL Vocal performance” (Brendon’s Super power) when news of this collab was released, and the anticipation of those things just rose and rose to an unreal high. So when the fans were met with the song/video that highlighted the joyful, charismatic, and animated characteristics of both Brendon and Taylor with impressive but standard vocals the fans felt let down. Truth is the pair couldn’t have been better matched to highlight those aspects of themselves. Brendon has always been very theatrical with his art, Taylor has always had a very animated/performative aspect to hers, and they truly brought the VERY BEST of those qualities out in each other. Now, if Taylor could persuade Brendon to come out of retirement (even for just a moment) and give the fans that “Unbelievably poetically relatable song with phenomenal vocals” Swifties and Sinners would LOSE THEIR MINDS with joy and delight!!

    • @dilafng
      @dilafng Před 5 měsíci +1

Swiftie here. I didn’t expect anything “unbelievably poetically relatable” before I heard this, but it is still probably my least favorite TS song. Really, I had no expectations at all, and I was not familiar with Brendon before I heard this song. The song was disappointing to me because it sounds like it was written for Sesame Street. The lyrics are not particularly clever, and the whole vibe of the song is very childish. This would be great if she wrote it for Sesame Street (and maybe she did, to follow in the footsteps of people like Dave Matthews and Katy Perry), but the song is just not appealing to me as a 57-year-old Swiftie. It’s not very often you hear Taylor rhyming the word “me” with the word “me,” or the word “you” with the word “you” - again, not very clever. I adore Taylor, but I just can’t find a way to enjoy this song. I hope that makes sense. ❤

Yep, it makes sense… after some time this track has grown on me, but at first I was disappointed. I am both a Swiftie and a sinner… if you’re not very familiar with Brendon, the two best examples I can share to highlight the points I made in my comment are A. Panic! At The Disco- The Death of a Bachelor (this track demonstrates Brendon’s UNREAL vocal talent, the man can sing! In that song his voice spans 5 OCTAVES, from very low-lows to very high-highs all using his chest and mix voice) and B. Brendon Urie - DuckTales theme song on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (demonstrating his playful, theatrical, animated nature… and also impressive vocals), I hope you have fun checking those examples out😊… I’m going to keep my fingers crossed for that “Unbelievably poetically relatable song with phenomenal vocals” one day in the future… but I appreciate your input, and I agree, I think this track let us down because you’re right it was far more playful than it was artistic, but I will say that while there were very whimsical vibes the video was incredibly artistic and well executed. ♥️♥️

Taylor actually co-directed the video and there are two behind the scenes videos for this. Well, reputation full of snakes was before Lover which Taylor before it came out represented with a lot of butterflies to the point where fans thought that the album was gonna be called Butterflies or maybe a song will be called Butterfly or something. Sidewalk is covered in chalk cause of these lines in the poem she wrote in the reputation era "Cracked her bones on the pavement she once decorated as a child with sidewalk chalk". French cause she later performed in Paris, and the French also hid the title of the next single "You Need To Calm Down", Taylor actually doesn't really speak French, she had a language coach on the set. Chicks because that's how Dixie Chicks call themselves now and they are featured on one of the songs "Soon You'll Get Better" about Taylor's mom. The little kitten she gets gifted by Brandon in the mv is actually a little cat actor whom Taylor absolutely adored and when she found out that he doesn't have a home her eyes, as she said "turned into hearts" and she adopted little Benjamin Button, he third cat. You correctly caught the Lover easter egg. People also a long time specualted that the album is gonna be called Kaleidoscope, cause she's shown a lot of imagery of that too, including in this video, but nope. "Hey kids, spelling is fun" can be actually now heard only in the music video, it was edited out from the song, cause it was getting way too much hate, as well as the song itself, cause apparently people just hate fun....

Whereas here the snake is her during her Reputation era. So after Reputation era she breaks away from the darkness which is displayed by the transition into many butterflies.
I also get the feeling butterflies always "rise above"
Lastly, the cloud creature was a serpent.

I always LOVE your reactions and all the stuff I can learn from you. I am glad you enjoyed it too! I have always thought of Me! as a little silly MV, but there's a lot of technical stuff going on WOW!
I see they've told you some details for the video, I don't know if anyone commented this one: but the street at the end with all the water, looks like the street at the beginning of Look What You Made Me Do MV, which you reacted to.
I recommend for you to react to Lover MV, from Taylor. And "I Dont Wanna Live Forever" from the movie Fifthy Shades Darker, which has both Zayn and Taylor Swift in it - since you've reacted to them both, I'd love to see your opinion in this one, I think it's very interesting what they do with the light/colors and how they cut scenes and transitions.

I’ve been looking forward to you reviewing this one, Josh! I saw it for the first time a few months ago and was dying back then to get your take on how they did all of that. “If the rainbow wanted to make a music video, this is what the music video would look like.” Love that quote. More content like this would be awesome!

Taylor talks about making this video in her documentary Miss Americana. Saying it’s all rainbows, cats unicorns.. everything that makes her, her. I love it!! The lines baby you’ll never find another one like me, or baby that’s the fun of me, and I know there’s a lot of cool chicks out there.. and finally I promise no one gonna love you like me. This is a Taylor who knows her own worth and isn’t afraid of saying I’m cool, I’m special, I’m kind of amazing and I will love you like no one else if you let me. Yes there’s a lot of cool chicks out there but you’ll never find someone like me. Taylor has (like most people especially girls/ women) had some hard time dealing with her self confidence and body image. But this song and video is not just about accepting who you are but to celebrate it and embracing your uniqueness. I love it. I love it for Taylor and I love it for all who listens to her music and watches her music videos. Love that there are beautiful and powerful female role models like Taylor for young people all around the world to look up to

Some Easter eggs you might have missed:
Them speaking French at the beginning when Brendon says like “you need to calm down” is a reference to another song from this album, You Need To Calm Down. That song was about LGBTQ+ rights, and rainbows ofc were a part of that.
And the Lover sign you noticed was the first Easter egg of the album title. The album is about all kinds of love so it had a cute cheery lovey-dovey aesthetic like this music video.
Cupid/Angels as the band in the concert scene is a reference to the album concept as a whole, but could also be a reference to the songs The Archer or Cruel Summer (which has a line that says “angels roll their eyes”).

I think the symbolism between the snake into the butterfly is showing how she has changed Eras since Reputation (the album before Lover) is resembling the snake and then Lover as the butterflies.

So many things first of all not that it matters but you got a new subscriber because you are just so awesome and I love how you explain this stuff to us. My son is named Joshua too! Also, I love the fact that you are so impressed with this because so many people are always putting everything she does down no matter what just because people hate on her! Taylor pretty much always knows exactly what she wants her videos to look like it's almost like literally, I think a comment already said this pulling something out of her brain and it ends up on a screen! She is that invested in everything she does!
Obviously she does! Tell me the last concert you went to that was three and a half hours long, but felt like 1? Vegas night 1
    🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍
PS there are so many Easter eggs in this video that we just didn't see and there are ones that we still haven't figured out it's amazing how many Easter eggs Taylor puts in her videos actually in almost everything she does even in her interviews stuff like that so many Easter eggs! Like she says she gave so many signs LOL

I love your reactions videos! Not just Swiftie stuff. I have binge watched your videos after they’ve popped up on my recommended list. And BTW the 3 women in the portrait is The Chicks (aka The Dixie Chicks) I love Taylor. She’s such a wonderful person and is seemingly a great person. And I totally agree with you on her videos - the attention to detail is just amazing. I’m not a big Swiftie and don’t know all the behind the scenes and stuff like that. But I do enjoy her music and how much she loves her fans.
Love your videos!! Keep it up!!
Edit: Not sure if you’ve done a video of Taylor Swift’s “You Just Need to Calm Down”, “The Man”, “Cardigan”?

I’m so glad you liked this music video! Too many Swifties hate ME! and the fact she made it her first Lover single/release. I think it’s a great palette cleanser from her Reputation era-just like the first scene shows. Yes, it is cheesy and campy but that’s exactly what she was going for…so she nailed the objective even though majority of fans were annoyed at this one along with the Lover album. I seriously enjoy the album, it’s just not her strongest work which happens when you’re a musical genius (even the less popular stuff is still gold in its own right.)
Also, the CGI is next level for this pastel party of a video which I’m so glad you’re reviewing! ❤🎉❤

Snake to butterflies was a sign to the end of her Album reputation’s era. The animal associated with that album is a snake because she was called a snake online a lot so she flipped it around and used it as branding. Now that she’s coming into a new album/era, she’s signifying that the animal associated with this album is a butterfly, signifying change and freedom from her previous dark album and her reputation

Loved the reaction as always!! haven't seen the ME! music video in so long so had a great time revisiting it with this reaction video. All her music videos are so unique and capture her emotions during the era it was shot in. You can tell she was feeling really happy and light during Lover era. This was also her first album with her new record label she currently is with who let her own her music. She was experimenting and fans didn't receive it well at that time. Swifties have come to love ME! as it's part of the lore and we see how much fun Taylor had making it. Please react to the music videos Cardigan (album: folklore) and Willow (album: evermore) next. The music videos are sisters just like the albums. Taylor made these albums during pandemic and is her most critically acclaimed work. Folklore represents spring and summer and Evermore captures the feeling of fall and winter. It's a journey!!!!!
