Bilmore House in Asheville, NC, built by George Vanderbilt who was the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, is still standing and thriving since it was first opened to friends and family in 1895. It's also still owned and operated by the family. It's a beautiful location and a must-see, if you like sprawling estates.

Fascinating stories of the first American families of wealth. Calling them shady, however, is a bit insulting. They were working hard within the system they were given. They were first American entrepreneurs. It is absolutely amazing that with their hard work and a business sense they created the empires that they did.

There was a Vanderbilt estate in the town where I grew up. It was sold not too long ago, I'm not sure what they're going to do with it. It was abandoned for years, I'm sure the local kids looted it. Kind of sad. I think it's been refurbished over the years. It was called elm Court in Lenox mass. You can find photos of it on line.
I hope to read Anderson's book, I love that type of history. I think I knew at one point that John Jacob Astor made the bulk of his money in the fur trade, but I had forgotten. Cool history.
