- When we left the Maldives at the end of May 2013, we had no idea that sailing across the Indian Ocean would be the hardest thing we have ever done. It nearly broke us, and our sailboat. If you've ever wondered what it's like to cross an ocean on a sailboat, we let you in on the secrets and reality in this video podcast.

Sounds like a life changer and saving those Turtles is like a ray of sunshine..brilliant story
Nice thanks , those auditory hallucinations are frequent with me too I think its the brain trying to recognise sounds from the boat and make sense of them
Its about the boat. A well prepared and maintained seaworthy boat will make or break the ocean crossing experience. As a solo sailor its all about autopilots .because its a boat its going to break. So spares are where its at.
hi Guys great podcast . you really brought it to life. well done saving the turtle's. its ashamed you where not vloging then , maybe next time LOL are you still thing of going to Japan?
Thanks for sharing your story.
Thanks for listening and commenting, it's much appreciated. Liz 🙏
That you told this story in your usual understated manner adds to it -- only in narrative art do I believe that less is more. (That sounds so friggin pretentious but I believe it entirely.) One question not addressed: how did Millie react to all this? I'm quite stingy with my internet time but your hour long poscasts are always time well spent. Best regards.
Thanks so much for the positive comment, Daniel. Millie stayed below nestled in cushions for most of the journey. She was a trooper and a brave, salty sea cat. I miss her. 😔 Liz
Such an excellent conversation. You two rock.
Cheers, fella! 🙏🤓Liz
The story i have always wanted to listen to. ❤
Just for you 🤗
@@followtheboat just finished watching this with Rene. You both are the reason why I wanted to buy a sailboat. The stories you wrote on your blog I read over and over. Thank you for sharing this way coz you're both great story tellers. This story didn't need B roll. The saving of turtles, hallucinations, wall of fire, squall after squall, hand steering all the way, Indian and Andaman and then Melaka straits .. fuyoh ⛵ not for the faint hearted.
Simply Amazing.
Another story I admire about FTB is the crossing of the Red Sea. When anyone says Red Sea we have visions of pirates and ransom. To prepare yourselves for the crossing, to actually go through it ... That's another truly brave experience. You guys have really earned your sailor stripes. 💘
Well told and equally well handled at the time!
Thank you 👍👍
Life’s memories eh!…but what a life, well done!
You talked about saving turtles ( 👍🏻)…
My biggest regret has been to see an owl in the middle of a motorway and not being able to save it!…it’s a memory that just sticks!
Oh no! That's so sad, and would stick with me too. 🦉❤😔 Liz
A while ago I saw cars dodging an object on the motorway ahead of me… by the time I got there I saw it was a swan… I will never forget the forlorn look on it’s face and I will always wonder what became of it…
Thanks for sharing. What an ocean crossing. I love your podcasts. Cheers.
Thanks for listening, I'm so pleased you enjoy our ramblings. 🙏 Liz
Really enjoy your videos thank you so much I just bought six months ago a Westerly 33’ ketch i’m not sure I’m ready for that kind of a journey yet👍
Enjoy your beautiful sailboat. Did you watch our episode on why ketches are the best? 👍🤓 Liz

Thank you for the video. It was very informative and accurate, with references to your body and mind. The ability of the body and mind to adapt to stressful conditions. Keep up the great videos. Fair Winds!
Thanks for the kind feedback, John. The body can do amazing things.
Hmm , I do not think I would cross an ocean or sea short handed with only one working autohelm . In fact I would want two independent ones working on a different system if I could . Now fully crewed maybe I would.
My boat has just one right now , but new to me and I am not crossing oceans . I am planning two systems independent of each other , one a hydraulic ram existing and I think the other an octopus drive . Both sets of electronics will be able to drive the other one's drive adding additional redundancy and a 2nd emergency steering system assuming you do not lose the rudder .
I would be able to steer with the octopus drive if the hydraulics go down or of course the emergency tiller . What I do need to work on is an emergency rudder next .
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
So happy you liked it, thanks for the comment! Liz 🙏

When I was in my early twenties I was working long hours and night classes plus running, anyway I used to see hallucinations on the windscreen of my car like Noel Edmonds Mr Blobby!
OMG. That is the stuff of nightmares. Noel Edmonds 😨
❤such I lovely story. Just got me imagining everything that u v been through! ⛵️
I hope it was atmospheric enough for you!
Wow, you guys are awesome. In so many ways. Cheers!
Hahaha, let me count them... Thanks so much for the positivity. Liz 😘
Ghost (mad) dogs and Englishmen. Great story!
😅😅
Love to be a crew member if you ever want another helping hand, if you do a distance crossing again ⛵
😃👍
The black dog 😮 most of my uncle's were interstate truck drivers before logbooks started and they could drive as long as they liked and they all had stories about the black dog. Always thought they were taking the piss
The black dog I know is depression. I prefer the seeing the shaggy type to be honest.
@@followtheboat long enough without sleep people lose their minds, maybe when you get to the point of seeing things you are depressed without knowing it or something like that
I am planning to take a boat from the UK to my home in Thailand so I will have to face this at some point.
If your boat is well found and you have a working autopilot and functional sails, it shouldn't be a problem, Tim! It's a fast crossing until the edge of Sumatra, by which time you're almost on the home stretch.
@@followtheboat Easier said than done I think, lol.
😅
Couldn’t you rig up a steering system using your emergency tiller?
The steering was fine, it was the autopilot and wind vane systems that failed. Cheers! Liz 🙏
Like 👍👍hi hello , nice to meet you 💕🎉🌺. I enjoy sharing great videos . I support you 💯 🎉❤🌺 ☕267
Thanks and welcome!
Did you consider heaving to and what is your thoughts on sea anchors.
We did, and we talked about it in the episode. If/when we cross another ocean we plan to take a series drogue system on board. Cheers! Liz 🙏
I’m interested that you say you relied on your main and mizzen. Was that because of the issues with halyard wrap on the genoa? I sail a 40ft ketch and if the weather turns gnarly, sail on genoa (or staysail on inner forestay) and mizzen.
Same here, the "jib and jigger" school of ketch sailing. 🤓😁 Liz
@@followtheboat Absolutely! The joys of sailing a ketch. Easier sail handling when short handed. Many thanks, by the way, for the hard work you put into the channel. Much appreciated!
Someone wrote I don't believe the story. Watching now. 🤔
the old Greeks had tales about hearing the Sirens during gruesome sea conditions. There is a reasonably recent video about an old sailor who is quite famous among insiders for doing a lot of crossings between continents with a very simple and relatively small boat, just sitting at the tiller for very long time periods day and night. He also talked about hearing things that do not exist. Yet these are the most crazy stories I´ve heard regarding this topic. Maybe Followtheboat are just the most frank and open in talking about it.
We don't make up stories. This is real. 🤓👌🙏 Liz
@followtheboat I believe every word and love your channel.

Just a bit of feedback on the title. There's a joke in there- the reasonable and the absurd.. the reasonable is that sailing across the Indian Ocean nearly broke your boat.. the absurd is that it nearly broke you too
The absurd part is the punchline of the joke, but you put it before the set-up. The brackets after the statement should have said (and us), not the other way round..
Yes, I had it that way round at first, but swapped it back to get the whole first part visible to anyone scrolling. Liz 🙏
I dont belive the story,,,,
I don't believe you don't believe it... Liz
@@followtheboat 👍
@@followtheboat The reason i dont belive is to-fold : No film AND that you are to easygoing. Handcontroll 2of 2 on fore 14 days? No,,,,,I dont belive it....Remeber the seastate : )
@perfstaas7188 Did you listen? This was pre our CZcams channel, before we did much filming.
As we say in the episode, there are a couple of blog entries we wrote at the time, which include images and screen grabs. They are linked in the description.
Nine days of hand-steering, not 14.
Just because you can't imagine it, doesn't mean it's not true.
Jamie posted a short clip from the crossing 10 years ago, check the date in this upload:

@@followtheboat Just one more question: Why deed you nott rest during this 9 say 24/7 sail?
