      he was 19 and this was actually a song that Finneas wrote for his band and himself but then he thought Billie would sound better in it. So they recorded for her voice and obviously used it for her dance class, but just for fun uploaded it onto SoundCloud. They didn't think though that all this would've happened.

    This was such an amazing eye opener, I have been crying myself to sleep for years because I thought my 20-30 track DAW projects would never, ever, EVER be worthy of releasing. I used to hear tales of artists fitting in hundreds of tracks and that was what was necessary to make hit music, that plus all kinds of expensive hardware. This breakdown shattered all my beliefs and gave me hope that maybe one day, I too can strike gold, as long as I just keep at it! MUCH THANKS, keep doing what you do because it's great!!

    • @LostinaMemory
      @LostinaMemory  Před 3 lety +54

      I used to think the exact same thing. The first few songs I put out had a TON of tracks but the more music I make I realized more does not equal better! Sometimes less is more!;)

    • @rubenbekkevold4455
      @rubenbekkevold4455 Před 3 lety +10

      I can relate to this. In the beginning I was making 10-15 tracks - wich sounded bad. As I progressed through couple of years, i found myself having 60-120 tracks. Was starting to sound decent. Then I started to choose sounds wisely, and stacking things. solid recordings (do it right at the source, don't fix it in the mix sorta thing..) went back to the 10-15 track songs i made and "enhanced" my sounds. NIGHT and DAY! Thing is, my melodies were actually somewhat catchy, just needed the right sounds ;)

    • @PADsoundtrack
      @PADsoundtrack Před 3 lety +5

      It really depends on how arranged and composed is the song you're working on. Sometimes, it's like a call the song make : it needs more details, more things that people will hear but not listen, and you add more tracks, sometimes 200 of it. And sometimes, like this song, you just need a few and the feeling is complete. The important thing it's to be sincere, and to trust yourself 👌😊

    • @Orbitt06
      @Orbitt06 Před 3 lety +3

      My hip hop/trap beats usually cap off around 11 to 17 tracks. And my more house stuff is about 25 to 40 tracks. I started out a few months ago but I still think those songs hold up. As lomg as you capture a vibe in your music, it has the potential to be really good, even if it only has like 5 tracks :)

    11:40 haha I am a producer myself. I use this technique a lot. He added the low voice there to distract from the harsh cut they made on the vocals (when billie sang mind slightly out of tune) so the deep voice hides it. Basically, you add stuff to cover the imperfections that's how it is when you don't have a professional studio. So it is not random, just smart :)

    no ones probably ever gonna see this but, for any song, if you're curious to hear some backing vocals the easiest thing to do is listen to the song with an auxiliary cord. Get the cord where the audio jack is and very slightly pull the wire out but not where its out of the hole completely. If you get it right you'll be able to hear the background music and some vocals. I'm pretty sure people have done this already but I recently found out about it. but yeah i thought it was cool. anyways thanks for taking the time to read this if you ever do🥰

      All you’re doing is playing the L and R at the same time, anything that is toward the centre of the mix is being removed by phase cancellation. You can do the same thing in logic, import two instances of the same piece of audio on separate tracks and invert the polarity of one and you will hear a cancellation.

    Korean CZcamsrs really need to learn from this video. This video is simply a one-take recording and cutting out some errors, no sound effects, no BGM, no flashy video transition effects, no subtitles, no intro jingle and computer graphics. This video is just pure and goes straight to the point which is a bunch of secret information. Viewers willingly pay their time to receive that precious information and we are happy.

    Thanks for doing this breakdown! Love this song and seeing the session. You know what you're talking about and broke it down wonderfully. It also goes to show, that while the nice expensive gear and plugins are great and allow for awesome creativity...you don't need it to create good music. You just need a vision and a passion.

    Some things that jump out.
    1. Billie is an excellent song writer and arranger. A huge part of the succes of the music is her, the production is def secondary, designed to stay out of the way
    2. Her soft, stripped down style allows them to get away with really usable recordings in an untreated room. The louder the artist tends to sing or perform, the more room sound you get.
    3. The production sounds pretty different from the final mix on the radio. I def feel like the mixing engineer layered the drums in particular, and did some work on the pads and stuff to make em more exciting which we don't hear in this session
    4. There's no autotune on the session and she likely doesn't need much, HOWEVER the mixing engineer would be using melodyne to really tighten up any performance issues.
    5. I also wouldn't put too much stock in any of the processing here for the same reason. The mix engineer would change a lot of this.
    6. Using multiple compressors is a pretty common technique. It's prob made most famous by Michael Brower. I prob use 4-5 compressors on my vocals.
    7. That said there's a lot of great stuff to learn here and very interesting to see it all stripped down. It's pretty expected ultimately but for a beginner it's great stuff

    Reason to bus most channels to more reverb busses is to set the space for the whole track. When you reverb individual tracks its more about the instrument flavour and/or position in the mix.
