Republicans may be good on restricting abortion, but are terrible on helping the poor and stranger in the land, as well as poor in stewarding the planet.

On voting for Trump versus Harris - I too am a one issue voter, just like you.
From listening to you, it appears abortion is the one issue for you (and maybe LGBTQ) - and so it seems that, no matter who it is - even if it is the most immoral one himself - if this person will give you the policy of ending abortion nationally or slowing the march of the LGBTQ movement - it seems to me that you are saying you’d vote for the person.
For me, my own one issue is not abortion but the preservation of democracy and our democratic institutions in America. Why is this important to me?
Because although I am today an American citizen - I wasn’t always one! I fled my own home country in Africa and came to the USA legally fleeing the devastation of dictatorial, authoritarian and anti-democratic governments. I lived the first 30 years of my life in such governments and have witnessed first hand the evil of such government! I did not run from authoritarian regime in Africa to come live under another authoritarian regime in America!
And to many of us who have lived under such conditions elsewhere, we observe with shock how vast numbers of Americans toy with authoritarianism - and we shake our heads knowing as the scriptures says “people perish because of ignorance”.
So yes - any candidate whose policy is to strengthen, and preserve our democratic way of life in the USA will always get my vote over and above another who has demonstrated constant willingness to not only ignore our democratic norms but actively tried to undermine them. Yes even if such a person is the immoral one himself - I will vote for them.
Because guess what - as long as the people have the power of democracy- the same people who voted that devil in, under a democracy, can also vote him out. But not so in an authoritarian regime. The authoritarian you vote in today to give you what you want is the authoritarian you will be unable to vote out tomorrow when he begins to work against your interest and good but only for his interests and the interests of his tribe, or group and acolytes.
But of course - that brings us to the question: who is the authoritarian leaning person between Trump and Harris?
Now that is a debate we can have as reasonable evangelicals who can always disagree.

Moral character does matter to God! So is the life of all people, whether they are in the womb or being shot dead in the streets!! Each perpetrator is committing sin that through the grace of God can and has been repented of by some, thank God!! My question to Dr. Brown and your audience. Can we legislate morality? If so, why do we not have laws to PREVENT people from committing fornication, adultery, lying, stealing, etc, etc, etc....!!! There are consequences to all sins, whether seen or not seen. But yet for some reason the only ones that seem to be the most important to Christans, which some, not all, are guilty of, is homosexuality and abortion!! Both are sins according to the bible. But are also committed by human beings whom God loves and died for their sins. Many homosexuals are no longer committing that sin! Why, because they became believers in Christ!! Many women who have aborted a child, repented 😢 and would never do it again because of their relationship with Christ!!😊 No law could have done that!! It is utterly shameful that Christians would ignore the wickedness of a leader whose only concern is himself, and allow him to rule over such a great country as America!!! Shame on you and all other Christians that agree with you on this issue!!! The mandate we have as believers is to preach the gospel which changes hearts 💕 and delivers people from all types of sins and has made lives so much better for everyone!! It is so sad what you are teaching!

The moral equivalence being made between a government law giving a woman the right to terminate her own pregnancy and a government law making an entire race of humans property of another race of humans is incorrect.
The decision to terminate a pregnancy is NOT always a moral choice. It could be a choice driven by health, by circumstances surrounding the conception or even the financial condition of the person who is making the choice. On the other hand how we treat someone else who is different from us is ALWAYS a moral choice. No one ever treats another human as sub-human because of their health, personal situation or financial situation. Pride is the only reason for thinking of oneself better or greater than another. The decision to terminate a pregnancy is only a moral decision in that unique situation when the reason for terminating the pregnancy is purely for personal convenience. But even in this situation, the question remains whether criminalizing abortion to punish this category of persons for their immoral decision is the right way to go giving that you would, at the same time criminalize, the vast number of people who are not making a moral decision when they decide to have an abortion.
The decision to terminate a pregnancy is a choice based on how one wants to handle the consequence of their own previous actions i.e. the decision to have sex or seek to have a child. The decision on how to treat another human is not connected in anyway to your own previous action. You did not contribute in anyway in what makes that individual different from you.
In my view, as an evangelical, our unwillingness to take a more nuanced view to this very complex issue of abortion or reproductive rights is antithetical to the heart of our Father which is one of mercy, as well as fairness and of loving humility. Our white brothers comparing this extremely difficult issue with the evil of slavery shows huge insensitivity and makes me sometimes wonder if white folks and black folks know that they worship the same God!
In conclusion - it is okay for you to make abortion the one issue one which you will cast your vote irrespective of the candidate. But by God - do not show insensitivity to your black brothers and sisters by comparing it to the injustice and inhumanity of chattel slavery.

      @chris2614-f5c Před 16 dny

With all due respect, black people were not the only ones who suffered salvery in America. But let's just assume they were for the sake of this argument. Using the same standard you applied for abortion can be applied to slavery. You claim it is always a moral choice and framed it as the way we treat people but that is incorrect. Slavery was very much transactional, just like abortion.
You completely ignored the fact someone could treat their slaves with care and respect. So, that would completely dismantle your argument that you can't compare abortion to slavery.
Additionally, slavery was often done for financial reasons. Literally almost every reason you gave for abortion could apply to slavery.
What can we conclude? Slavery and abortion are both morally wrong. Whatever your reason for having slaves or having an abortion are wrong.
Even if the mother might die, I think abortion would be the morally wrong thing to do. Most people wouldn't be ok with a parent escaping a burning building to save them self but leaving their child behind, why are we ok with a mother killing her child so she lives?
I would encourage you to try to look at this again and consider that killing children is just about the worst thing someone can do.

In fact, it is well documented in history that while the scriptures did not explicitly say thou shalt not have slaves - yet believers who wanted to abide by the command to honor all humans and love them as they would want to be loved immediately knew that owning slaves was something they could never abide.
On the other point you raised about a mother choosing to die rather than terminate a pregnancy, I do not believe that's a decision any one of us here can make for any one else. I hope on that at least we can all agree.

What both parties do in religion is cherry pick parts of the bible they want to make a stand on, while not touching on the parts that are less popular with either base. For example, Jesus said on divorce if anyone divorces their spouse except for fornication or adultery , they commit adultery if they marry another person, and so does the person who marries them. I would not be part of the group "Evangelicals for Harris" because they are too "rah-rah" for Harris without any criticism. I have disagreements with Harris (especially on abortion), but I will vote for her because of Trump's criminal actions on Jan 6th, and his lack of support for democracy. He also chose JD Vance who recommended the book "Unhumans" which denies Imago Dei of political opponents and literally calls for a Franco-like dictatorship.
I wish I had a traditional Republican that I could vote for. I supported Nikki Haley in the primaries (although she seemed too callous towards the fate of Gazans who are also people created in God's Image). I did agree with Haley on Ukraine and pretty much everything else. But the GOP chose Trump.
For me the single most important issue this election is democracy. Trump still denies he lost in 2020, staged a coup, promised to be a dictator on "day one", has praised dictators and slammed NATO, has said he would encourage Putin to "do whatever the hell he wants," has supported criminal immunity for presidents, indicating that he would (again!) break his oath to uphold the constitution (also calling for the constitution to be suspended), has hinted at a third term, and many other red flags. Vance is similar - in addition to recommending "Unhumans", he's on record of recommending presidents ignore court orders, using Andrew Jackson's ignoring the court in implementing the "Trail of Tears" as an example.
Trump is an existential threat to our democratic republic, as well as to democracy worldwide. Harris is not.
And anyway, Trump has tossed pro-lifers overboard. He is pro-choice again now that the pro-life position is no longer politically expedient. And I have no doubt that he would base future justice picks on those who will support his autocratic leanings, and will no longer listen to the Federalist Society. Also, the ridiculous ruling allowing criminal immunity for presidents tells me the court could use at least one more liberal appointment for balance. Harris cannot re-establish Row v. Wade without two conservatives dying or resigning.

I wish I could have called in but I didn’t have the time to do so this afternoon. I identify as an evangelical who will be voting for Harris. I voted Trump in ‘16 and Biden in ‘20.
There are many, many reasons as to why I will vote opposed to Trump. For any evangelical to do so, abortion is the first topic to deal with. Off the bat, the three exceptions Trump himself names comes to mind for me. Apart from that, it’s important to realize that the Supreme Court is now a conservative majority. One in which I feel went too far, vastly so even, with the recent immunity ruling. We actually need a balance of power on that court in my opinion. As long as it remains a conservative majority, I can’t foresee any change to abortion. So there alone, while yes Harris may appoint a justice or two, it’s very unlikely to change the majority. Anecdotally, to say I’m disappointed with the court is a vast understatement due to that immunity ruling, but that’s a topic for another time.
And that’s just one argument against being a one issue (abortion rights) voter this election cycle. There are more.
That groundwork laid out, Trump’s narcissism is, I believe, exploitable. As long as someone praises him, stays in his hotel, is “nice” to him - they can likely pry any information they want from him. National security risk, anyone?
And secondarily, although related to his narcissism, Jan. 6th and the election denialism eroded faith in our country’s democratic process. On into the future we may well have an unfair election, but Trump’s cry of wolf here may haunt us or our children from it being believed. The most I can do to show my immense displeasure with that fact alone, let alone all others related to it (I.e. our VP’s life being in danger of the mob) is vote for his opponent once more.
If more evangelicals stood their ground against Trump before in primary voting and along the way, we might not be in this awful predicament, yet here we are. It’s truly a shame of historical proportion.

Then subsequent reveals of the Jan. 6 footage were just that. Nobody broke any windows. They were invited in by the police, very peacefully.
You said it eroded our faith? Really? What about the George Flloyd riots that cost this country millions of dollars. As far as I'm concerned, when I heard about the fracas at the capitol, it was another scrape that demonstrated the line in the Declaration Of Independence, "It is the right of the people to alter or abolish and to institute new government." It was a decent demonstration of our democracy.
