      @@BreadDefender Let's hope he (and many other republicans) actually keep their word on this issue, but I'm not super hopeful. Grahm just might, because he used to be good friends with Biden, and Biden is leading in the polls. He may want to get back on his good side before he gets elected. Mitt Romney might, just because it's the right thing to do. There's a few others who may see this as being just a liiiitle too much, especially with the political winds changing.

      It could be on every TV station, but it won't matter! People are not happy what the left did to Kavanaugh, and they haven't forgotten it! Graham said after that all bets are off, fairness is out the window, and the democrats want to keep changing the rules, so the republicans have no choice but to fight dirty! But what they are doing is within their constitutional duties and rights! No one can argue that!
      If you want to put this hypocrisy all over the tv stations and every website, then all the hypocrisy from the left would also be displayed!

      @@davidcouncil493 - 1:04 Graham prefaces his comment by pointing out that Obama was a lame duck and that both Republican frontrunners had asked the Senate Rep contingent not to confirm Obama's nominee. He was golden there.
      Why did he feel the need to go further and extend this position to first term presidents too?! That was just stupid. Presidents, especially first termers, don't stop being presidents in their 4th year. If an opening comes up, then they get to nominate.
      And the Senate needs to follow Rules of Proceedings--which kinda by its very name implies proceeding or moving forward with a nomination--and not Rules of Procrastinating--which would be the complete and total opposite of proceeding.
      The one and only possible exception that I could see to proceeding forward, and therefore the sole basis for obstructing and postponing, would be to defend the US Constitution. Where a nominee, such as Garland, were identified who had made it abundantly clear that he had no intention whatsoever to abide by Constitutional limits on enumerated powers and planned on availing a President of every executive order, bureaucratic regulation, emergency power, and obscure treaty provision under the sun in order to wield control over the American people, then that extremist sort of nominee would call for a commensurate extremist defree of opposition to block his confirmation. And that's exactly what we got.

      Vote for the candidate that will most likely unseat the GOP rival, because the future is an stake! First, the GOP systematically won as many state legislatures as they could. Then, they began to destroy the limits on campaign finance rules/opened up the dark money avenues, and finally, the GOP funded "grassroots" efforts to create chaos (eventually) in the Federal Legislative Branch... This all traces back to 1968, and there are various moments where this plan really gained momentum (1980, 1994, 2010, 2014, and 2016)

      What happened with Garland was wrong. Mitch wasn't blocking the Democrats when he didn't allow the hearings as Republicans had the majority and could have simply voted not to confirm him. He was blocking the moderate Republicans who would have voted to confirm Garland as Garland was qualified and in line politically with most moderate voters. It set a bad precedence and led to a sharp increase in political division. Need to stop that from ever happening again. There should be a rule/amendment that the Senate must hold hearings and have a vote within a set amount of time, such as 30 days, after the President makes a nomination. I would prefer to have a moderate court and therefore hate to see another another Trump pick where he panders to the far right but I do think that any President should have the right to make a nomination and get hearings provided elections have not yet been held.

    So McConnell says a quip and the WP is somehow equating that to the other senators saying it as well, otherwise why show clips of them too? Did the Wp do one on Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid when they all stated they would block Bush II's nomination if he made one in the presidentail election year, as well as showing their outrage that the Repubs. did the same thing to Pres. Obama? I would love a link to the Washington Post doing that with them back in 2016 but I am also guessing that video was never created (by the WP at least).

    Right or wrong, this is modern politics. Both parties are opportunistic and would do this sort of thing if able. For the Washington Post to throw shade on Republicans for this is to also throw shade on Democrats.

    I don't get the story here. Obama tried filling a vacancy in his way out of office. In 2020, Trump will just be starting the first year of his second term. So what?

    • @Garrettmcarpenter
      @Garrettmcarpenter Před 5 lety +1

      Common Sense Because Obama was still the president of the United States. Because the vacancy was not filled for over a year. Because the republicans where using politics to sway legal precedent in their favor but forcing the then President to not fill the vacancy as per the constitution.
      They are tearing apart the norms of democracy to have their way. And eventually it will ruin them later on.
      Now, it's unlikely we know who will win the 2020 election, and I don't understand why this is relevant to the conversation.

      No, Trump will be in the last year of his first term in 2020. The next presidential election is Nov 2020. The winner of that election will begin their term in January 2021.
