  • In this video, I break down Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young's rookie season, which was full of ups and mostly downs. He had little to no help in year 1, and while he isn't blame-free, he should improve in year 2, with more weapons and protection around him.

No. As you clearly show, he doesn't NEED to. The _team_ has improved roster-wise & his stats will likely show improvement due to it. But if he himself changes nothing, he'll be fine & his stats will improve. Thanks for doing this btw.
But I think that the comments section will not like this. In my experience, NFL fans want meaningless narratives & look down upon analysis. So what appeals to me doesn't appeal to the majority & I like this. So, sorry for that but this is gonna be one of those videos I e-mail myself the link to so I can revisit it again & link it in replies to Young's haters.
But here's a question: who are the Panthers gonna best this year?
They upgraded. But so did Everyone Else. The Falcons aren't likely to lose to them again. They'll be able to sustain more drives but they also lost 2 of their biggest defensive stars. I'm not worried about Young or social media narratives around him. I could see he was good & handling this terrible season better than expected from a rookie.
This is just the video proof of it. 😉😈

Without a doubt; IT wasn't only the players around Bryce but the coaching staff was also hot garbage. Lots of in fighting going on behind the scenes, Play calling duties where swapped 4 times. The O-line was built for a power run scheme but Coach Reich and company were hell bent on turning the panthers into a finesse West coast style offense in one season and we saw the results.
The Panthers have dedicated the majority of the off-season to finding Bryce help. Just having more then One target that can consistently get open (Theilen) will go along way. Dave Canales is committed to getting back to a power run offense. Over all, a lot of pressure will taken off of Bryce which will reduce the bone head plays a rookie in a shit show is bound to make.

I'm not blaming Bryce for the Mingo incompletions. I've seen far too many plays where Mingo stops running full speed on his route and Bryce throws the ball to where Mingo should be if he kept running hard. As for the sacks and escapability. You made plenty of fair points. But I don't think most QBs are having the interior line break down as often as Bryce did. That should be cleaned up a lot this year with the Hunt signing. And that will probably help his accuracy too since he will be able to step into throws now that the interior isn't collapsing

What killed a lot with the panthers receivers is 75% of routes were stop routes so even with ball in hand on the rare catches there was no possibility of YAC and it allowed the defense to flood the box making it where you shut down TE slot and RB with 2 LBs

Field is Lava absolutely killed me!
Other than that, pretty comprehensive film. He's pretty decent. I can see him at best as a second tier QB in the NFL, averaging maybe 3500-3800 yards per year with the ability to win games and read defenses, as well as attacking the middle of the field. That intermediate skill is very important in the NFL, as that will carve up a defense if the Panthers can successfully supplement that scheme with a run game.
A lot definitely did not go Bryce's way, and due to a certain owner's inexperience and arrogance, I figured we shouldn't grill him year 1.

One thing I've been noodling on in the offseason: I feel like a lot of his "arm strength" troubles are essentially mislabeled stance issues. He can't blast it downfield when he's on the run because for him to get any mustard on 30+ yard throws, he has to use body mechanics (hips, motion) that he couldn't when the OL was breaking down in front of him. So a better OL might see him attack >25yd throws more next year, but only when designed?

Bryce did not show flashes in a meaningful way relative to his price tag. Bryce has a nice collection of throws from this year that are "starting quarterback" level you're right, but there was practically zero plays that showed he was worth a #1 overall pick plus next years first overall, plus 2 seconds, plus DJ Moore. The flash you would see from a player on that level would be unmistakable.
People are obviously talking about two different types of flashes, the talent level I've seen so far from Bryce is not first round, I would consider taking him around mid to second round if a redraft happened today. If you're only looking for plays that prove he knows how to play football - well we already knew that, his college career spoke for itself. At this level and pricetag you are looking for someone who transforms a franchise

You really need to show the down and time please . Alot of these sacks you are blaming on Bryce have way more context. Like the "sam howell" sack it was 3rd and 8 with 12 minutes left in the game down by 19. They have to make a play there, cant throw it away. Bryce led the leage in throwaway passes by double digits.
    Throwaways- 1st (46) (2nd howell with 32)
    Scrambles- 10th (29)
He is now 6th in NFL history with most sacked qb in a season wirh 62 (Howell is also 3rd in history after this season) imagine if he actually was bad at at causing sacks as you say. the bad plays are there absolutely. But the bad plays youre showing or bad skills he had last year are misleading. Context matters. Show the down and time please. Also don't forget to mention he had his playcaller changed 3 times, his HC and QB coach fired mid season, and all around horrible coaching staff.

Not to take away from the video. It was a really good and overall fair videom. You made fair points and actually brought in stats to back up what you were saying. And very well edited and detailed.

You forgot that he has zero pocket awareness and got himself sacked half the time by leaving the pocket and walking right in to defenders. A majority of these plays you show are in garbage time against soft defenses. As a Panther fan, he isnt good. Put him on the 9ers and he still sucks

You forgot a huge reason Bryce Young was bad year and thats mechanics. Alot of throws it seems like hes falling over to deliver the throw and his Drop back is WAAAY too slow

You’re being far too complimentary. There’s not much to like. Hes far too small, like from a play strength standpoint he’s always in backpedal/retreat mode(4 EPA?)because he can’t step into throws and take hits. He can’t be played under center which eliminates all the most efficient goal line plays. His “touch” throws are at full strength. He lacks the necessary arm strength to drive the ball outside the numbers. He doesn’t see things clearly. His backpedal is too slow and he’s never in throwing position, he flips his hips before throwing, he plays with no urgency, line and receivers weren’t confident in him, he didn’t raise their play. Too many game management type errors to ever count. All sorts of major red flags he won’t ever work.
