- Milwaukee M12 Cordless Hammer.
Stuff I used in the video:
Milwaukee M12 Hammer: amzn.to/3ROBEdG
Air(cordless) Hammer bits .401 : amzn.to/3the7J8
After Thoughts about the Video: .498 shank air hammer bits are too big. The Standard .401 you find with most air hammers is what this needs. It works surprising well and I think it has a lot of potential. There is a cheaper Power Hammer made by Skil( amzn.to/3RP6anW ) that I was going to try first but it has less power in head to head tests. This Milwaukee seamed to be the strongest on the market.

Milwaukee made a corded electric hammer decades ago. It was basically a hammer drill minus the rotation. I've got one sitting in my garage.
I have one but it has a switch to where you can turn the rotation on and off
I'm not really sure why hammer drills tend not to have the option to disable rotation like rotary hammers do. It would be nice to have.
@@dsgamecube it has to do with the mechanism itself. On a hammer drill it's a totally different mechanism than a rotary hammer, and yes they could theoretically incorporate the rotary hammer style into a drill but it would just be so unwieldy and job specific very few people would want to use it as an actual drill, especially if the market already supplies the rotary hammer.
Hammer Drill always with hammer only mode
Do you have a model number for it?
This is quite the experiment! Thanks for the willingness to try new ideas and make videos about them. I've definitely learned a lot and countless tips/tricks from you over the years.
Thank you!
Milwaukee definitely needs to make a cordless air hammer. Id definitely buy one.
Why would you want China to make a air hammer I rather see dewalt make one America first stop supporting China 🇨🇳
An SDS+ cordless rotary hammer also works well instead of an air hammer or palm nailer. The downside is it’s much more bulky, and you need to use the SDS+ bits instead of normal air hammer bits
I can see Milwaukee sending you a draft notice for the R&D Army.
Lol
We often don't have much room to work on cars so this is GREAT...! Plus you have a LED light with that...! Thank you Sir...!
Wow at how versatile that little m12 palm Nailer could be
That would be great for popping spot welds when picking at the salvage yard!
Spot welds! Heck yeah it would. Great idea
A piece of rubber hose would make a nice retainer as well
There are numerous people online using these for dent removal, for metal shaping and riveting. Using both cordless and air powered units. Conventional bits can be bought and used, bought and modified or even made out of coach bolts etc to provide the shape required for the job in hand. A good example would be on Sheetmetal and hammer forms
It would be really cool if someone made a needle scaler that could fit it. Would be perfect for the small/tight spots of rust that are difficult to access with an air powered one.
That would be cool!
That’s super cool. I had no idea how that little m12 palm nailer worked. I never in a million years, would have guessed it had a mechanism similar to an impact wrench.
I get a kick out of seeing how this stuff works.
So do a great many of us. Thanks!@@sixtyfiveford

@@sixtyfiveford I’ve ruined a lot of my parents appliances by taking them apart to see how they work 😂
Great looking tool! Not only does it perform better than the Skil branded, but the grip and positioning makes a whole lot more sense.
I've just bought the milwauke one but i was having some regret and thinking of going with the skil one. Are you sure this one is stronger than the skil?
I watched a video where a guy used a cordless hammer drill to drive in grounding rods. Thanks for the upload
@7:16....if I remember right, there is a concave spot on the shaft that the bolt rides in (like a sideways dutchman key) to help keep it located and provide extra torque for the steering arm. You have to take the bolt all the way out to remove it.
Really interesting tool, thanks for the tear-down.
you could use a rubber hose over the bulge on the chisel amd the collar of the palm nailer
Well, now that you gave them the idea for FREE, I feel sure that someone in that industry will make a fortune on it.
Milwaukee currently has a patent out for a cordless "Air Hammer". Hoping to see a 2024 release date.
There are two sizes air chisel bits. Your standard automotive air hammer .401. And then there is .498 Astro pneumatic also referred to as big nasty. Named by Eric at South Main Auto.
That is a fantastic idea, i would probably use a tool like that on the regular. Thanks for sharing, great video a always. Glad to see ginger taught that ball a lesson
Thanks 👍
I agree its like a impact wrench just Mechanically setup sideways
Wait... you mean I could use my air chisel to drive nails? Never thought of that :) Time to break out the lathe and make a magnetic nail holder attachment.
Oh, and the sheetmetal tool on a decent air chisel is awesome. Just rips. I remember trying it out for the first time, wondering what that stupid looking chisel was for... holy crap it cuts. It's so easy it's hard to stop... way too much fun.
Ya you put the SDS on hammer only setting i use it for chipping concrete and also cut a chisel tip flat use as a vibrater to vibrate concrete inside of smaller DIY projects
I've sent the cordless "air hammer" idea amongst many others to Milwaukee a few times for my "Pipeline Wish List". Hope this video helps spur it into production.
Milwaukee patented an air hammer in 2022, so likely been in development for several years before then. Hope they launch it soon
I saw another video on this about a year ago after I bought mine. Impressive tool.
Home Depot kit 2458-21 , nailer -battery-charger-bag
$119!
It's interesting how it works, maybe some company will make a dedicated battery operated hammer one day
Great idea! I may try this out using heater or Tygon hose to hold the bits. A year ago, Full Steam Designs did a video on YT making a M12 nailer adapter on a lathe to hold a sheetmetal planishing bit by using O-rings.
U really onto something with this, ty for sharing this 🤙
I might have to mention this to my contact at TTI. Maybe it will become reality. It's not like the technology isn't available.
Hey Moe, another great video. I don't need a cordless hammer but I sure do want one after watching your video. I was surprised at how well it cut the sheet metal.
I kept cutting after the camera was off. So much fun for some reason.
Just use a sds+ or sds max hammer if you're in a real pinch. FYI Milwaukee has a patent on a electric m18 air hammer/chisel. Just hasn't been released yet.
Very true. Yeah I was perusing patents today and saw it. They have around 5 interpretations of it but bet it takes years to come out with something.
Awesome! I like it. I was thinking about the same thing the other day. Sometimes a cordless recip hammer would be super handy for sure.
It works better than I thought it would.
SO AWESOME!!! Use it in place of an: awl, nail set, etc... I'm going to try putting a stronger magnet inside the sleeve to hold the bit. LOVE your channel! So innovative!
Sounds great! Thanks.
IIRC, the palm nailer was mostly used for installing flooring close to a wall. It allowed the board Ms closest tot he wall to be tongue nailed instead of surface nailed, to reduce the amount of visible nail holes.
I wish they made a battery needle scaler
We use an air hammer with a round head and a guide to hammer seams on ductwork. I can picture a short hammer insert being really nice
Definitely an artwork some of the duct work I've seen people make.
That sheet cutter looks the goods. My air hammer always breaks the tool. That thing might not. And it’s portable.
That is such a funky tool. I had no idea it even existed.
It's such a random tool even air powered it makes me wonder why they took the effort to engineer and make it. I can't recall a single time I saw anyone using a palm nailer on a job site.
So I have no Idea how I stumbled into your channel but thank God I did! Super awesome content!
Glad you enjoy it!
Working with tools and diy projects keeps my head out of the worlds negativities and problems
😊
We have them. Rotation stop on most SDS drills. I’ve been using mine as air hammer for years.
Thank you for sharing that one 👍👍🐝🌞
Needle scaler needs to be made as well.
Very true. They do sell those air hammer needle scaler adapters. That would be awesome.
WE LOVE IT WHEN YOU TEAR THE GUTS OUT IT!
Love seeing what makes these things tick.
Fantastic! Thank you!
That spindle on the Ford would have come out had you removed the bolt. There is a grove on the spindle that the bolt sits inside of. I have a video of changing out the bushings on my 8n on my channel, if you care enough you can go see it there. Other than that, awesome video! I’ve been wanting a cordless “air” hammer. Hopefully they take this video and make a dedicated tool in many tool lines!
Great idea! Now all i need is a cordless palm nailer!
MM77 Approved 👍🏻👍🏻…………………………………..I’m sure glad you took that apart instead of me, it would still be in pieces!! LOL
I have one made by skill, use it all the time at work for applications just like what he’s showing in this video. And it actually comes with a handle similar to a hammer and the head can be rotated 90°.. Very useful tool.
Works pretty good.
I never knew about the joist constraint with nail guns. Left me wondering why we ever needed palm nailers. Now I know!
Pretty cool. Nice job.
Another quality video !! Merry Christmas to you and yours and Tater Tot says "Woof !" to Ginger.
Hey Thanks. You're going to have a great Christmas with all that poultry. Adorable little guys.
On that tractor that he was trying to pull that steering arm off that bolt goes through a notch you have to take the bolt completely out for that pivot arm to come off of there
You are right.
Great and useful idea.
* Love basketball wrasslin'... our chocolabwannabe used to wrassle a child's plastic outdoor chair for hours. Was great fun for everyone lol
Thanks for sharing!
That's funny. Basketball Wrasslin...
Again, thumbs up for the dog.
Next week at a homedepot near you a Milwaukee rep will be showing off there new cordless chisel
That's why I keep putting off buying any air hammer
Milwaukee M18 we need a strong cordless chisel. Milwaukee has not come out with a car battery booster that we can use the current battery platform with. Your channel and the well trained dog is awesome to watch. Thank you.
I was looking for something like this, pretty cool
You should patent it before someone gets your idea
That thing has a lot of power!
I finally bought air hammer before I left to get married. I would have liked milwaukee one. I was wondering about this hammer. Good video.
The Air powered hammer is only surviving by the air hose which is in my mind the umbilical cord going to the air compressor while the battery powered Air Hammer is being operated by the battery
That's a great idea especially in places you can't swing a hammer
if they made one with a bit assortment, i would NEED to have one. i have been hoping they come out with a cordless hammer tool.
Good thinking thanks 😊
Hey Thanks.
Unfortunately $55 IR air hammer is alot cheaper than a $150 Milwaukee nailer but it could be handy in a pinch if I was in a remote area and needed a make shift air hammer for a emergency repair. I have a craftsman nextec I mite, have to try out and see how it works now. I'm curious if the skill one is more powerful also. I seen another guy do this same thing in another video. It's definitely interesting!! I doubt you will see a cordles hammer due to the piston vs a dog style impact variable the piston in a air impact is extremely efficient and without air its just not as powerful but its a Cool video, man good job!!
I did watch a head to head with nailing large 6" nails and the Skil was killed by the Milwaukee. Convenience is a burden sometimes as I find myself using cordless tools over air that have more power/smaller.
@sixtyfiveford that's cool I hope to see more of your very creative vids in the future you always inspire me to try and save some money somehow!!
What a cool tool, the first time I found out there was an electric one
I can't like this more than once so here's a comment! Thanks for sharing, that sheet metal cutting was the best feature.
I kept cutting off camera as it was working so well.
about the closet thing in a day to day basis id say is an sds drill with rotation lock.
Badass Awesome five out of five!
It doesn't get any better than that!
With all the cordless tools out there, it is a little surprising an "auto-hammer" hasn't been introduced. Milwaukee should thank you for the concept. A clever engineer could come up with an adapter kit for existing tools, though that would eliminate the need for a brand new tool. An adapter tip for the standard 1/4" hex impact would potentially do the same thing.
The Palm nailer is such an odd ball tool it's funny they chose to even make it.
@@sixtyfivefordI agree. I have an air palm nailer that I have used about 3 times in 30 years. Not often needed, but handy when the situation presents itself.
I had the same idea to use this tool to do solid rivets for a bus
Who knows, you might have sparked a tool maker with your idea.
I always thought that Ginger was a little squirrely and the clutch rig on the palm driver reminds me of the old ball type starter clutch on the flathead Briggs motors. And I thought about getting a palm driver till deck screws came out. Thanks and BLESSINGS 2 Yall!
Now that you mention the Briggs, that's so true.
May be horning in on the patents a bit.@@sixtyfiveford
I think it would be good for times when the regular air hammer is a little too strong
Craftsman, ryobi, skil all came out with one. Not sure who is first, but these came out years ago
I remember the Craftsman Nextec hammerhead
Will the tool be good for breaking front end bushings or for loosening fan clutch nuts? In terms of power..
I can’t wait for Milwaukee to make a m18 air hammer. I’m so sick of pulling a hose around and trying not to run it over on the lift.
You can use the sds hammer drills like electric hammers, they have a setting just for hammering and no rotation
Cool . They make the rotary hammers , Does make one wonder why no one makes one.
I was at the Home Depot looking at compact rotary hammers this afternoon and it seems unlike the big ones you can't make it hammer only. You can only drill or drill/hammer. I know the big ones have just a jack hammer function.
Luv it 65!
Thanks
That's the first time I have seen the inside of a power hammer, I'm impressed with how simple the design is. Thanks for the video. 👍 Ginger appears to be all healed up. It's a good thing Ginger can't climb trees, she would decimate the squirrel population 😂.
It's a dang good thing she can't climb trees, because she thinks she can jump out like a cat. Just the other day she launch off the footboard of the bed at nearly 5 ft high and cleared a good 9-10ft of distance... Crazy dog.

The difference between humans and animals - impossible isn’t in their vocabulary. 🐕👍
Oh yeah, I dig this video, started thinking more. Great engine new a tea. That tool seems a little small for what you were working on. Oh yeah, you said that. If they made a beefy version it could be used for all kinds of those applications.
skil makes a great 1 like this i think i like it even better its also brushless and in 12v
I was originally going to try the Skil but in head to head nail driving videos the Milwaukee was the clear winner.
I've learned it's because unlike most air tools the air hammer design utilizes air pressure in a unique way. The air isnt spinning a component it is accelerating a projectile in a rapid controlled fashion. There is no electric replacement when it comes to high power air hammers/riveters.
Someone from Milwaukee needs to see this video and get to work on a m18!
I have a Craftsman 12V cordless power hammer. Works great.
When I was watching this I thought I remembered Craftsman making one also, thanks for the confirmation. Now if only Stanley-Black & Decker would make one as I don't have any Milwaukee batteries or chargers.
Awesome man! I totally didn't notice this tool. I wound up finding an older used Craftsman Nextec 12V Auto Hammer, kind of along with the thinking I wanted the tools to also be able to use with the Hypertough battery since interchanges close enough. Gets me thinking about making an adapter to be able to use the other air hammer tips. I found a honking Vevor SDS hammer and battery adapter to be able to use with. Have videos regarding the later two topics, though looks like I didn't even note anywhere to embarrass myself regarding the auto hammer. Mainly, I was thinking for seeing if will work for impacting the crankshaft pulley bolt to help pull pulleys off small engines. Thanks for sharing and cool to see!
Were you able to get the batteries to work?
Yes, definitely the Hypertough 12V work with the Craftsman Nextec 12V. The other way around I think there is an older design that does, though not mine. The Extended Ratchet I own by Hypertough female like connection is too long shaft and would require some of the plastic to be removed for the Craftsman Nextec batteries to fit. I just checked and looks like the Nextec might fit Air Tool bits. Time to dig around to find some of those that I never used and my Dad left me at least I'm thinkin. Thanks for sharing, would have never thought. @@sixtyfiveford
I have used mine as a planishing hammer although it is air powered. I have used my regula air chisel for breaking thick ice on the driveway. The best thing I have used one out of ordinary use is to brake rear brake drums free. Here they lock up after sitting for a few months. Hard to break free and hard to pull the drums off.
Absolutely, the stubborn rusted brake drums.
I use my rotory hammer all the time in the shop. It has double the blow that my air chisel has. Fun video though.
Craftsman made one of these 15 years ago. It was battery powered too.
Rubber band wrapped around the bit and then around the palm grip might hold the bit so you don’t have to hold your hand there. No tape. Easy bit swaps.
I am confused. DeWalt has been making 18v and 20v battery powered Rotary Hammers (different than the Hammer Drills they also market) such as their 273B for some time now. On them you set the function by a dial. Drill, drill and hammer, or just hammer. Although they were intended for working stone, when a point bit becomes too worn to bust up a slab of concrete (or granite), since an SDS bit is primarily carbon steel, making it magnetic is 3rd grade simple, as is grinding the point end flat and tempering that. Voila, instant nail hammer. Actually once a point (or even chisel or twist drill) has worn down to the point where the tungsten carbide tip is gone, nothing prevents reshaping it into whatever you want, be it a screw driver, or a cutter bit, and tempering to suit the new purpose.
Dude this is genius, gave a well-deserved like for this! Thank you for sharing! Do you happen to know the chuck size for those chisels and other bits? I think I'll be upgrading my palm nailer to a power chisel as well. 😏
Standard .401 fit
@@sixtyfiveford thank you!
Nice
Skil makes a 12 volt one too
If they updated this and/or made a m18 version, could be very useful for me, I don't have a proper air supply for a big hammer.
Good work around until Ryobi makes another crazy tool ! My use would be junk yards for sheet metal. Also cleaning stone lade bark of tree stump roots before chainsawing.
I would say a Palm Nailer is no different then a Air Hammer mechanically
Can you tap the holder and thread the piece you want it to hold?
