Welcome back to the Game of Thrones mod for Crusader Kings 2! This time, we will start around 40 years before the events of the show, in the War of the Ninepenny Kings. Maelys the Monstrous, the last of the Blackfyres, gambles everything in a final bid to restore the house of Daemon Blackfyre to the Iron Throne where they belong. We will see if the true heirs to the Iron Throne can outlast the Targaryen pretenders!

Not a bad idea! I'll be honest, I haven't read any of the Dunk and Egg books, but Gormon Peake seems to be a great Blackfyre loyalist for sure.

Cool, glad you enjoy! Yes, as I've said before I think the whole roleplaying / interactive storytelling aspect of CK2 is what keeps me coming back after so many hours. In the early days of CK2 and EU3 I used to read the insanely elaborate AARs (After Action Reports) on the Paradox forums, and I wanted to revive that spirit a little bit with these intros.
Sad that the first attempt collapsed at the end! Derrick Fossoway living up to his nickname as "The Bad Apple" and slaying the king would have made for some good RP. It's a really tricky start though so it can't be helped 😅
It's cool that some of the Targaryens escaped from Maelys' wrath as I'm sure they'll present some fun obstacles in the future. Now you have to think of a fun character for Maelys to marry. Maybe one of the Targaryen girls if you can lock them down? In canon Maelys killed Ormund Baratheon in combat who was married to Rhaelle Targaryen so she might be an interesting choice, if you end up going to war against him - although she might be too old for kids.
Also save the Reynes!
Yeah, that was a shame. This start is a bit of a dice roll; sometimes you get lucky and win in a few months, sometimes you are completely destroyed. Yes, killing off the Targaryens is a medium-term goal for sure. I was really in doubt at the end if I should go after Ormund to free up Rhaelle, but I hope to free up young RhaellA instead by killing Aerys. I think I can't command Tytos to stop fighting the Reynes, but I will have another look next episode.
Tricky start and great storytelling. Altough I think Maelys (or any Blackfyre) would wear Aegon the Unworthy's crown if they ever got the throne, since he's the last legitimate ruler before Daemon Blackfyre in their opinion and they don't even recognize Maekar as a rightful king.
Good point! I might switch it up next episode.
New subscriber here, I am going to watch this series, The War of the Ninepenny Kings is usually ignored by many players, so it is nice to see this and you give a very good explanation on things. As a fan of the books, I am impressed.

Your point about the image of Maelys being propaganda is really interesting! It makes a ton of sense especially considering that the Targaryens practiced rampant inbreeding and yet there were no known cases anywhere near as bad as how maelys is described. And maelys was probably less inbred than most Targaryens.
I can't wait for Maelys the monstrous in CK3 I hope the devs can make him even more like the depictions would be cool
15:45 I'd agree if there wasn't the passage of Tyrion visiting the Golden Company and seeing the skull(s) of Maelys.
would make more sense that maelys was the last KNOWN male descendant because who could keep track of there lineage and it would be quite dumb if the many descendants of daemon had no children of their own
I dunno, the Blackfyres seem like a pretty important family. Would be strange if no-one was tracking their male descendants. It's not like there would be hundreds of people to keep track of at this point in time: Maelys is only a grandson of Daemon I. I think Young Griff is probably a Blackfyre through the female line though.
@@JJLGamingNL as you said this is more than biased take and more than likely the maesters made an assumption as daemon has many children and unless the company is conveniently careless I don't see them letting his male bloodline die out

I played a few rounds of the Blackfyre Rebellion starts as Daemon
And there's either a skill issue, a game mechanic, or the sheer numbers of the Targaryen army that is just ruining me
I don't think the ally armies are attaching properly OR there is no clear war goal which basically just have everyone scattered, it's ridiculous
As you saw during this episode, it took me several retries as well to do it as Maegor. I think with Daemon, the numbers are more in your favour. I'd recommend to start by sieging down King's Landing, giving your allies a chance to link up, and only then starting to pick off loyalist armies. It might help to only press the 'attach allies to army' button once you are in King's Landing: whenever you press that button, the allies first move to the province where you pressed it and only then to where you actually are, so if you move after pressing the button the AI sometimes takes massive detours. It remains a luck-based thing though.

Hey man I've got an idea for a series, why not play as Old Valyria or create the Empire of Old Valyria in an early start date. I think that would be fun mixed with your roleplay.
