Great video but one issue. It is highly recommended to use copper pipe for the first 10”-16” of the inlet and outlet. UV light can weaken PEX and CPVC pipe.
How is that possible if the connection to the unit is brass. The PEX is not directly being touched by the UV rays. I would like to see info on that one.
If the bulb is always on it should be treating water ... gotta be a way to send water back thru a second or third time if the system is sitting idle at night or when not in use (ie everyone asleep or not home)
As you said, the UV light is always on. Once water travels through the UV filter, it is sanitized. No reason to send it back for additional sanitation. Sanitized water sitting over-night is still sanitized for very long periods afterward.
Seams like a bad idea to bypass the uv system when you change the bulb. This would let water that has not been disinfected to fill your hot water tank and the rest of your homes plumbing?
Never use sharkbite fittings. They are good for a quick fix until it can be repaired properly by a licensed plumber. They are not meant for permanent use. Also the uv light systems are not a scam but are really meant for people on a well water system due to potential for bacteria growth. Not so much on a municipal supplied water system. Normally just a whole home purifcation system will do the job.
Shark bites are not temporary I have had mine for years they are a more expensive version of sweating copper pipe.any liscensed plumbers use these to save time. please stop spreading false information
I thought uv light deteriorates pex rapidly, and instructions state not to install pex in direct sunlight because of this. Isn't the UV light being emitted from the bulb equivalent to sunlight? Also don't the shark bites have a plastic collar inside them that will also deteriorate from the UV light? Not trying to take anything away from your install video just want to make sure before I go ahead and use this setup.
The UV light does not shine directly on the PEX or the shark bites. The UV light is only inside the chamber and shines on the water as it passes through it. For me, on this type of installation, unless you can secure every connection to the wall, I would go with glued PVC or sweated copper. I know shark bites are good but i'd be worried over time.
@@1SpudNuts1BigNasty-DIY UV in a mirrored steel tube can and does shine around corners. I can see the glow through my pex... back to the hardware store for a heater connector.
Trubba001 I’ve completely removed the UV sterilizer due to constant problems with leaks (nothing to do with UV or shark bites, just cheap Chinese crap). If I do go back to UV, I’m going with threaded copper on inlet and outlet for 6 inches and then to the PEX.
Yes UV light will damage PEX over time. You should use copper for at least the first 16” on either side of the UV filter housing. You can convert to PEX after that if desired.
I was told by a home inspector who had a background in micro-biology that the filter should be installed as close to the well as possible, i.e. right where the water comes in, before the pump even.
How effective is the UV light, as far as flow rate? Also what kind of pressure can this unit handle, especially being installed on a well water supply. And is 3/4" line in/out ok?
I didn't realize they made residential UV devices at such high flow rates, 30 gallons per minite. WOW! But, that being said, I've been around the block with tap water, various filters, etc. and I finally decided that there are too many variables and too many chemicals and chemical by-products in tap water with which to deal. And, in addition to the added fluoride and chloramine and the pollution in the groundwater, there is the issue of several miles of pipes that run from the water tank in your town to your home. They are probably 20 years old and WHO KNOWS WHAT is growing inside them and WHO KNOWS WHAT is leeching into the water from them! Here's what I do: I have a Royal Berkey gravity filter but I use my Berkey in a special way. I have an AWG (atmospheric water generator from DroughtMasters) that removes 6 gallons of water per day from the air here in Clearwater, Florida. I then pour that water through my Royal Berkey which contains 4 Black Berkey carbon block filters. The AWG unit contains a UV light that kills bacteria, etc. I literally get my drinking and washing water from the AIR! I plan on having my output water tested by National Testing Labs in Ohio. Cheers! Steve Downing, Clearwater, Florida ** Sweetpuppy*com/BigBerkey **
There are mechanical filters that deal with *all* contaminants. It's a non-issue, especially in a reverse osmosis system. Finally, the UV at the end of the system will kill the viruses.
We have made improvements to our UV since this video. This is a similar system: www.uswatersystems.com/pulsar-ultraviolet-disinfection-system-by-us-water-systems.html
If I put a UV filter on my house inlet after my filter system will it prevent Legionella from growing in my hot water tank (it's before the hot water)? Thanks.
He explained it clearly, that it prevents water from getting into the UV system while the system is being serviced. Otherwise you'd have a flow of water coming at you while trying to change the bulb, or whatever else you need to do to it.

Shut off for bye pass ( on the left ) should be higher to prevent stagnation water from forming in the down pipe ! Nice Video… good ides to consider!
Great video. Very informative and professional. Now it’s my turn to try the install.
Thank you sir

Is there any issue with placing PEX nearby the UV filter, since I've heard UV light degrades PEX? Thank you?
Well explained.
Where is your pre filter and they don't recommend pex at lease 12" from the uv system. Also by-passes are not recommended.
Seams like a bad idea to bypass the uv system when you change the bulb. This would let water that has not been disinfected to fill your hot water tank and the rest of your homes plumbing?
So true. You could buy gallons of water to drink, but still be able to flush toilets and shower.
So I assume the light works all the time. How hot does the water get, like say overnight when there is no flow?
Up to 140 F. So unplug and wait for metal housing to cool. Also use at least 10” of copper pipe at each attachment as pvc might soften and leak.
There is a error to use galvanize union because they are going to rust, coper union are the normal one to use
this seems to be a serious error in the video, almost worth a complete video update! Thanks for posting this information
Its a stainless steel union!
Look closely. Stainless Steel. You can tell by the threads.

Does the UV light damage PEX tubes?
Hello.I want to ask, is it possible to supply voltage to the lamp without water? Thank you.
Does the units sync with house wifi to send you signal when there is trouble…

You are correct! I would suggest using the Stainless steel flex hose (6"minimum) on the ports.

A white lab coat on a guy who looks like he's been drinking all night is a nice touch! Just kidding, I'm rough looking too.
Do i install the uv system before my whole house water softener, or do i install after my 5 stage whole house reverse osmosis systems???
Always after a Softener. I would put it after the Whole House RO also. UV should be the final step.

Before the water heater for sure. Always put as much water treatment before a water heater that you can.

No drain at bottom m
The cost of the shark bite fittings used to do this could have paid for a licensed plumber to install with copper...
Haha it is true, and too many shark bite connection will cause leaking for long term use :))
The issue with copper is. They are finding flux to be nearly directly linked to Alzheimer. And not just the "tin foil hat" theories.
Why would you bypass a a water purifier? Wouldn’t you contaminate the water system?

Yes. It also kills viruses.

Shark-bite fittings are nice fast fittings but I don't like how they tend to swivel when you try to operate a shut off valve.

What is the size of those shark bites? 1inch?
Why do you need the bottom valve on the uv unit ... what does it really do ...
He explained it clearly, that it prevents water from getting into the UV system while the system is being serviced. Otherwise you'd have a flow of water coming at you while trying to change the bulb, or whatever else you need to do to it.
Can the light be mounted horizontally instead of vertically?
Yes. We do recommend vertical though because of easier water flow, but horizontal is still effective if it's your only option.
Great for you to drink.
