William Harrison Dempsey was Jack’s birth name.Jack took his name from a fighter named Jack Dempsey the Nonpareil who boxed back in the 1860’s. Jack’s older brother used the name Jack Dempsey as well.

I've been fascinated by Dempsey since the mid 80,s.Even named my pitbull after him.Luckily my dog was a wimp, nothing like Jack. You could have mentioned Jack's heritage on his father's side was Irish and Cherokee Indian on his Mother side.Which probably explains his tanned appearance
The Roaring 20,s ,what a time to become world Heavyweight Champion! The first sporting superstar.Destroying Willard and introducing to the public "the Dempsey roll"!
Dempsey was Mike Tyson before there was Mike Tyson.I could go on for hours but you're doing a great job, thanks for the great video mate! Thanks from the U.K. 😊😊

6’ 1” at 190 of solid stone weight. Jack was a small heavyweight back then. He would of been a cruiserweight today. Him and Rocky Marciano would of been a dream fight. Rocky was 5’ 10” 190 also at fight weight. Rocky was a small heavyweight also and would of been a cruiserweight today as well. I’d say the fight could of gone either way between the two and would be a really equally balanced war. Both stubborn with tough chins. Both can punch a wallop.

Jack Dempsey at 180 plus pounds had no loaded gloves when he fought Jess Willard! He had fistic power in each hand.A guy at 180 plus pounds can hit very hard and do serious damage especially if he's a trained boxer!

Any fighter over 175 pounds is a heavyweight and can hit very hard with power.A 174 pound boxer(light heavyweight) can hit with a force of 1000 Newton's.A guy doesn't have to weigh 200 plus pounds to hit very hard.Ive seen guys at my gym at 170 something pounds hit the punching bags with force.A man at 180 plus pounds is strong enough to generate 800-900 pounds of pressure with a punch!

Not true. Its the technique of how you deliver the shot. I boxed amateur as a younger man and i was over 200 lbs and had about 26 fights. Ive felt the difference, some bigger guys just dont have knockout power either because of technique or the intention behind the punches. When i hit someone i was trying to hurt them, i could tell when someone i was boxing didnt have that killer intention when they hit me, or didnt have a good technique, like snapping the shoulder, turning the punch over or putting your body from the ground up in a power shot.

  • @johnv2232

If Jack Dempsey had loaded gloves with something it would have broken his hands. His gloves were NOT "loaded".The man just had natural punching power and could hit very, very hard.

While Dempsey paid for his breach of rules in the Tunney fight, a close look at that film shows Tunney would have been counted out if the counting started when he first hit the ground--14 seconds on the canvas made the difference. Indelible boxing historic moment!

Did he beat Jack Sharkey off a nut shot in your opinion? Just rewatched the fight and Sharkey had his number somewhat until the stoppage which came after Sharkey complained to the ref about a low blow, took a left hook that dropped him, then writhed on the floor grabbing at his midsection. Sharkey was not KO'd, he seemed to be in agony from the initial shot to the balls.

People always point out that Dempsey ducked Sam Langford. And that's true. However it is never pointed out that Jack was a young inexperienced fighter at that time and did not feel he was ready for the very experienced Langford at that moment . The claim is out of context, and I wish it would be corrected.

He never admitted ducking a few fighters in his autobiographies I've read them all and all he's said is he was afraid of Sam Langford who would've been well too past his prime while Dempsey was champion. This is all common knowledge of boxing fans

Dempsey like a good number of people from that era loaded their gloves when there was felt a need and opportunity to use it. Alot will say the accusations was sour grapes by Kearns but I saw either a interview or a piece about one of Dempseys former hand wrappers who talked about that. It was a lost art it wasn't plaster of Paris. The guy said the mixture would dry just harden about the time the fight started. To me the way Dempsey holds his gloves in that Willard fight looks weighted. If you believe the accounts of the damage done to Willard it would point to something akin to brass knuckles. Willard until his death maintained that Dempseys gloves were loaded. Dempsey hit hard enough without help. This was for all the marbles and a time this loading would be deployed.

To me it is clear JD had loaded gloves. He never could do that much damage without them. After the fight when JW went to shake his hand, he felt something funny in the glove. Jw's mgr went to check it out and the gloves were lost. Boy that was convenient, later JD said he had the gloves and would not show them to anyone, strike 2. Kearns said afterward the gloves were loaded. To much evidence to show otherwise. JW went 26 rounds with J Johnson and had barely a scratch. Loaded gloves is the only reasonable explanation.

This matter was settled some years ago when the film of the fight was found showing Dempsey entering the ring without his gloves on and then with Willard's cornerman examining his fists and watching as the gloves were put on. The film is available on youtube.
